In this speech, Rahim Taghizadegan shares an exploration into the history and evolution of Bitcoin in the context of the concept of 'free cities' and decentralisation. Starting from the 1990s, it delves into early initiatives like e-gold, which were thwarted by government interventions, and touches on various libertarian philosophies that served as intellectual backdrops. The talk traces the trajectory of digital currencies and decentralised systems through various failures and learnings, concluding that Bitcoin has uniquely succeeded by virtue of its resilience and "failing upwards."
The talk further suggests that the rise of Bitcoin is part of a broader societal change toward decentralisation and autonomy. Bitcoin conferences are identified as miniature 'free cities' or 'citadels,' transient communities formed around shared ideologies. Rahim challenges the audience to consider whether these communities could evolve into more permanent structures and how the ethos of decentralisation could have broader implications for society, particularly in the context of governance and autonomy.
