Using an Android phone as the interface for your Arduino project

Information on how you can use the macro buttons in the Serial USB Terminal app, your Android phone, and an OTG cable to provide a simple and cheap(!) interface for an Arduino project.

I am using the Arduino to measure the depth of a drill rig that is designed for archaeology. I use the Serial Terminal app to collect the data for each test pit from the Arduino and then hand the data file off to ESRI Field Maps which logs the test pit GPS coordinates to a cloud based mapping service. The information you provided will let me experiment with moving data and control from the Serial Terminal app back to the Arduino. Thanks (Quemahoning)

this method is suitable to old phones like android 2, android 4? I mean phones where OTG is not working

Is there a way to do this via a bluetooth signal through the phone. Trying to do this for a bike lock project so wouldnt be able to physcially connect the phone to the arduino

Yes, but probably nothing from this video will be of use. Look at the adafruit Bluetooth app for Android/iOS (although I've had trouble getting it to work reliably)

Hello sir, if we don't have system option settings ,what is other option ? I need to interface my phone with Arduino to do the automatic cooking project so what option i have to choose?

As far as I know, all android phones have the ability to turn on Developer mode. On your phone, it may not be in the same place that I showed.

Hello, im trying to build a robot that I can communicate with using cellular data, so im attaching a phone to the robot with a SIM card. This video was very useful. Im wondering if I can send data through the internet, to the terminal, so I can control my robot remotely, do you know how I can do that? I have no experience in android development so if there was a way I could just use this terminal, but remotely through the internet, that would make things easy, but if building my own app is necessary, then Ill do it, can you point me in the right direction to making an android app that can receive data from the internet and push it through the USB to my arduino?, thats all I need,, thanks

You can't do it with this app. You should look into MIT's AppInventor - it's a free, accessible way to make your own android apps.

My Android phone makes a sound when I plug in the Arduino, but the Serial USB Terminal says there are no USB devices. I enabled USB debugging, but still nothing. What am I missing?

Hm not sure. Is it definitely connected via an OTG cable?

@@RobDuarte Yes, I am using the OTG cable. I assume the problem is something with my phone. It is a Moto Z4. I will keep playing around with it and maybe try some other serial terminal apps. Thanks
