As a former EY employee, I would add that it is a culture in CA firms and moreover the Big-4, where work can be high pressure especially during seasonal times. Audit can be especially more stressful. I’ve known this to be the case even in firms in the U.S. where the culture is work intensive as compared to Europe. However, it is also true that in India and parts of Asia such as Hong Kong, Japan, etc., work culture is inherently intense. The difference being in India, the pay can be low for staff employees as compared to other countries. Labor laws need to be appropriately changed to give more leverage to the workforce, and to prevent overwork resulting in loss of lives. This concept is known as Karoshi in Japan.
