Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
4. No evasion moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- *In gen1, evasion boosting is allowed if the Pokemon does it through means other than learning the move by level up or TM. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed. (This exception is to keep ranking consistent with my legacy videos.)
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons all my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- All in-battle glitches are allowed in generation 1
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1, banned in gen2, and allowed for bypassing terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
-- The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it

You probably know this at this point since this run was recorded months ago, but in FRLG you can buy TMs for Brick Break and Dig at the Celadon Department Store, so getting a couple of extras to increase moveset flexibility could be handy. In this particular run, having an extra Brick Break before the Champion would have been very helpful.

Raichu and pikachu are suffering from thier stat distribution and thier electric type in Firered, that why the game developers gave it an access to brick break and dig. Because of earthquake can hit twice as hard while being underground, Giovanni, and Champion were really tough to handle. Also the reduction of speed was really critical for Raichu . That's why sub strats are best strats. You can access it through a tutor near by the Fuchsia city . Substitute can shield you from stat reduction, and can give you more time to attack. And by the way,you can buy onter TM 31(brick break) copy in the Cleadon department store. This way you can have some flexibility in trems of movesets 😊. But onter then that was some epic finish.

One thing that could be useful for Electric types in FRLG is Substitute. You could set it up against the Rhyhorn to block Scary Face, protecting you from one hit and letting you outspeed Dugtrio. It also has utility in the route 22 rival and champion fights, since Pidgeot has terrible offensive moves and is pretty easy to set it up against. If you want a really dumb/maybe genius idea, you could try to Mimic Earthquake from the first Rhyhorn by teaching Sub, Protect, and Mimic. Block Scary Face with Sub, Protect so it uses Earthquake on the next turn, and Mimic Earthquake the turn after. This does take three move slots, but if it saves you a massive amount of grinding it could be worthwhile. The Substitute tutor is by the Kangaskhan cage in Fuchsia and Mimic is in the same place as gen 1.

I think it's funny you mention how Static can paralyse ground types. Fun fact (and I think you might dislike this even more): when Sword & Shield released Gigantamax Pikachu, they gave it a move that paralyses both opponents when it hits. That also includes Ground types, it will not be able to damage them but if it hits the partner Pokemon in double battles, that is an Electric type move that paralyses a ground type

honestly, i'd argue that if you have to pick three types for offensive coverage, it's hard to go wrong with electric, fighting, and ground. i've been doing a lot of riolu solo runs in different games, and once my little man gets force palm/brick break and bulldoze/dig/earthquake, it's over for anything that isn't flying type or a ghost with levitate. its most dominant performance so far was easily in platinum where it could pick up thunderpunch by tutor and didn't have even that issue. what raichu lacks in variety it makes up for in quality imo. related note, someday in the distant future when you start doing gen 4 runs, riolu is a VERY fun one. total powerhouse for a baby 'mon. even without spending time grinding shards for move tutor, you can get your mitts on fighting stab + return + EQ before the third gym and swords dance before the fourth, and fantina is really your only hurdle as you've not got much choice but to rely on rock tomb for her.

The electric , fighting, ground combo is one of the few where grass/poison actually thrives defensively. Grass resists electric, poison cancels grass's weakness to fighting, grass cancels poison's weakness to ground. When you're a mediocre mixed attacker, you need that super effective damage!

When it comes to Kanto electric types, I've grown more attached to the quirkier Magnemite/Magneton line, but like many a kid, I was a fan of the Pikachu line. Raichu in particular because he was Pikachu but more orange, which is an improvement. 0:53 - Still keeps a surprisingly high physical attack stat though. It's funny how physical oriented they made the mascot whilst proceeding not to give many physical Electric moves to utilise. 2:20 - The interesting part about it's move is, outside of Electric, it's remaining TM movepool is heavily focused on physical types. I guess they have it's lower Special Attack compensated by STAB and has it's higher physical attack there for it's TM moves. 5:00 - The Pikachu's of Viridian Forest wanted to see your Pikachu off as they depart for their grand solo challenge. 8:19 - Joy of joys; you no longer have to rely on Slam. I will say, I think you should start off more of these battles with Thunder Wave. Given Pikachu's low Defence and Special Attack, he can't take many hits and is hardly guaranteed to knock the opponent out first. 12:44 - I know Dudley has changed his explosive ways by this point, but it would still have been nice to see his artwork thrown up. Cool to see him get a mention though. 15:42 - Given how much you've struggled against the Rival's lone Grass type, it's no surprise you struggled with a specialist of Grass types like Erika. 20:09 - I feel Dig would be the better opening move against that Nidorino. I know it's not by much, but Raichu still has better physical attack and Nidorino has slightly less Defence than Special Defence. 22:33 - Always amazing the challenge that Venomoth of all Pokémon manages to pose to you. 25:16 - The tense decision making at this poison point was thrilling. 30:16 - So were the EV's maxed out at this point? Cause a Protein or two might have been enough to boost Raichu's attack enough. 34:17 - It's actually rather surprising how much Special Defence these Kanto fighting types have. You'd think they would be more physically defensive than special defensive. 40:36 - That paralysis is a blessing. I suppose an early game difference that I feel more beneficial in the long run is keeping Thunder Wave. Given how drawn out these fights have been, I feel it'd have been particularly beneficial to you. 42:33 - This Protect and Toxic combo is certainly a unique move-set idea. Really funny imagining this giant electric mouse utilising this tactical strategy.

I know that I've said this countless times on this channel, but I feel obligated to say it since this is a run that involves the Pikachu line. As a kid, whenever I played Yellow, I always grinded my Pikachu to level 20 in order to beat Brock with him. This was partly because I had a guide that said he could learn Slam at that level and that was the best way for me to maximize my friendship with him so I could immediately get the Bulbasaur the instant I arrived at Cerulean City. Never mind the fact that I always also trained my Caterpie/Metapod to level 10 so it can evolve into a Butterfree so it could learn Confusion at that level (which is sooner than in Red and Blue) AND a Mankey that I grind to level 9 so it can learn Low Kick. It's such a surprisingly decent strategy that I always powergrind Pikachu to level 20 in *EVERY* Yellow playthrough to this day. XD Anyways, as always, excellent run, Scott and Team!

Yoooo!! Great run!! Now I'm waiting for Scyther. That bug is a monster in gen 3! I played fire red solo with it and I finished the game at lvl 62... or 63 (started against Loreley at lvl 59) playing at 1x speed, something around 7 hours ingame and lots of resets. Final Moveset: Swords Dance - Slash - Steel Wing - Aerial Ace. I struggled a little bit against brock. I had to grind until scyther gets pursuit, against rival 5 and 6 because Pidgeot loves to use FEATHERDANCE, Blane was a nightmare, and Loreley was... "annoying" hahahaha... Oh, you probably know that but, for grinding in fire red is very useful to use the "VS SEEKER" that you get in Vermillion's Pokemon Center with the purple hair girl. It take some steps to recharge but its worth it because you can battle trainers with higher lvl pokemon how many times you want to get some extra XP. (battles with trainers give you lots of XP and some extra money too) Sometimes the VS Seeker trolls you and the trainers do not want to battle, but it's very useful anyway.

The only other way to paralyze a ground type would be to use Stun Spore, Secret Power (while in a building/street), Body Slam, Psycho Shift , or if it physically hits a Pokémon with Effect Spore which will cause it to either be poisoned (unless a Poison type), asleep, or paralyzed. The only other circumstance is if the Pokémon has the foe paralyzed via Synchronize. The only ones truly immune to that status are those with Limber and Komala who is in a constant state of sleep.

Is there a reason you didn't use Thunderbolt on bruno's machamp? It's a guaranteed 2HKO after sitrus recovery. Even on the hitmonchan tbolt does slightly higher damage (68.7-80.9% instead of 65.6-77.8%) and it cannot lead to an OHKO from hitmonchan's Counter. Also, looking at your raichu's stats, both of your offenses are nearly minimum for a perfect IV pokemon. It's tough, because the only mon that gives offensive EVs that exists in the early routes (pre-Brock, when you did most of your EV grinding) are mankeys. The thing is, the average XP gain on viridian forest is 33.475 per encounter on FR, and 32.275 on route 22 (so the forest is only 3.4% better yield), and you would get 55% speed EV and 45% attack ev by training on route 22, instead of 33.333% hp, 25% defense, and 41.667% speed that you get in Viridian forest. I think it's worth training on route 22 with a line that relies on its physical stat for so many fights, particularly with Giovanny and the rival's venusaur and rhydon being such a roadblock.

I usually don't get annoyed when you make misplays, things happen, especially hours in to a playthrough you just tend to go on autopilot I get it. But watching you use Return over and over against the Machamp reset after reset nearly broke me. Yeah its defense is slightly lower than its Special Defense, but Thunderbolt with STAB is so obscenely more powerful it easily overrides that. I don't have exact math obviously, but I wager it would have taken one less hit and you could have saved yourself some headaches there.

Scott you need to EV train with Raichu for this playthrough. Idk if you used proteins to get to 100 attack EVs but after that you need to find a Pokemon to grind in the midgame with 2 Attack EVs per faint to get to 252 (max). Then you won't need to be level 73 to beat Giovanni + Brock That or you can start Pikachu out with Surf since there was a legal import method back then, but the above EV training advice still applies for most other Electrics

Looking at your stats at Giovanni, prioritizing Atk EVs and maybe an Atk boosting nature (-Spd maybe?) probably would have gotten you far better results. Ironic that Mr. Mime and Farfetch'd mess up your software, since the recently completed speedruns of this game happen to use those two Pokemon to do a credits warp!

I don't know how much it'd affect but why not Electabuzz next, since Buzz gets Psychic, Brick Break, and other helpful moves to supplement it outside of just electric and normal moves.

idk if anyone has mentioned this but there is a very easy way to make money early in the game, fire red missed a very important exploit at the nugget bridge if you blackout train at the end against the rocket that gives you the nugget. he will repeat the scenario everytime you battle him which means he will keep giving you nuggets

22:20(ish) - talking about Farfetch'd and Mr.Mime...did you hear about the new CreditsWarp glitch that was found, using those two pokemon? i dont quite understand all of the details, so ill just point to Abyssoft's recent video about it, in case anyone's curious...

For Pokemon that have to grind before Brock, might it make sense to EV grind instead of EXP grind? Like, knock the trainers out first and all that, but grinding for experience might end up being counterproductive by the time you get to the late game. Admittedly, your EV options pre-Brock are limited (only HP, ATK, DEF, and Speed are available), but knocking out Mankeys for Attack instead of Caterpies for HP might've helped the lategame somewhat. Even if you don't just grind for the specific stat, grinding at route 22 would've been less experience (32.28/battle vs 33.48/battle in the Forest), but the distribution would've been nicer for what you wanted (.45 ATK/.55 Speed for each battle, vs .4 HP/.3 DEF/.5 Speed per battle). Other issues in later battles, but I think other commenters mentioned most of the improvements. Looking forward to you hitting this game with the full Scott's Thoughts rigor in the future!

Curious if a light ball Pikachu would out compete a Pikachu that can evolve into Raichu 🤔

Honestly, it's not my style, but hitting Bulbasaur with Growl at the start might've helped, at least the first time or 2 EDIT: with the poor move selection, I'd say it really really needs a redo

Starmie is actually a grossly overpowered Pokémon to fight that early in the game. Misty should have had like a seadra or something man

The Champion battle where you first got past Rhydon would've REALLY benefitted from using dig against Venusaur to stall out sunny day or dodge the one solar beam where he was taking in sunlight

30:18 I'm wondering if catching a few dozen wild Sandslash to steal a Soft Sand from them would be worth it instead of having to grind more. Maybe temporarily replacing Brick Break with Iron Tail isn't too impractical at this point either.

Deleting Brick Break instead of Dig when youre going into 2 fights (Agatha and Lance) where 70% of the Pokemon are totally immune to Dig, Brick Break has a higher Base Power, and there was a Rhydon on the horizon seemed like a bad idea, haha. Others have mentioned getting extra TMs but really just not deleting Brick Break at all was definitely the way to go
