West African waters once had some of the richest fish stocks in the world. Today they are severely depleted. Fishermen in Senegal fear for their livelihoods. Europeans, Chinese, Russians and Turks have overfished the waters.
The abundance of fish was once a blessing for the people of Senegal. Now, fish stocks have been severely depleted. For decades, fishermen here have been increasingly deprived of their livelihoods.

Same problem in South Africa: check the fishing fleets in Cape Town. Local flags but mostly Chinese ownership. All this is a result of the massive corruption driving African politicians. The environment is completely ignored for the sake of money and greed. As far as Chinese fishing fleets, this is a worldwide problem, and you will remember the 200 ships fishing fleet cleaning dry the South Amercian coast around the Galapagos a couple of years ago. In the old days we used to say ''when there is will there is a way'' but now this has become ''when there is money there is a way''.

Are they all South American boats? Or are the Chinese entering their waters?
@Wulfieman
@Wulfieman 21 күн бұрын
@@mattmccallum2007 The boats fishing illegally tend to be from China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Spain, UK, Russia, and Germany. Their modus operandi is staying in international waters and when the Argentinian Coast Guard leaves the area they'll move into the EEZ and start overfishing. It's a very big problem because Argentina doesn't have the necessary equipment to stop the hundreds of ships from illegally fishing every year. And the local laws don't have severe enough punishments for those who fish illegally. I remember a few months ago that a Chinese ship (named Tai-An) was caught illegally fishing a protected species of Argentine hake (the load weighed 163 metric tons) with a market valuation of around 5 million dollars, that was released to its owners and allowed to be sold after the company paid a fine worth 30% of the total catch. With such lax penalties not only is the problem not going away, you're inadvertently incentivizing illegal fishing because the reprimand for illegally fishing is a small fine compared to what they'll be making by selling the fish, and that's on the rare occasion that they get caught.

Explain to me how indigenous Alaskans have not been able to fish salmon for years yet I can find it in my grocery store everyday. Salmon is a vital food source for that population. The boats have gotten bigger and the technology has improved it's what I call fishing slaughter. The world's population has grown. demand is always high. Let's not forget all the illegal activity as well. In peak breeding season all these types of fish species are hit the hardest. There not given a chance to breed nor get to a decent size. Nothing can sustain this sought of punishment. I feel sorry for these people whose lives depends on it. I live in Australia I used to buy a fish called smoked haddock. The size of these fish fillets were as big as my arm. Now I don't buy them as the fillets are a third of the size ofnot smaller. That's just an example. You cannot pilfer the ocean especially in peak breeding season and expect it to survive.
