This game reminds me of my childhood in the end of the 90s. Back then the U.S. Armed Forces still had military posts in the Republic of Panama; and in Fort Clayton they had the Recreation Center. I used to go there every sunday with my family, and I remember that there they had the arcade game itself of "RAIDEN 2". I used to love playing this game. My dad was always sure that I had enough quarters to pass the game!! Waaoo; those were really the good old days!! 😢😣😔

Back when both sidescrolling shooters (Gradius) and top-down shooters were popular this game still stood out, so ahead of its time graphically. This is still one of my all time favorite arcade games.

Wow, this game is like the battlefield 3 of shmups. Everything feels like it reacts rather realistically, and there is a lot of detail put into environmental effects. (for the time anyway.) The way debris falls to the ground and leaves a dust cloud or splashes in the ocean, that tank in the water left a crater UNDER the water, the tank tracks, etc.

The part where I thought the detail was crazy at was at 18:00 - if you pay attention to where the bomb is dropped, there's a tree there...after the bomb, the tree is on fire. Seibu could've just removed the tree in instances like this, but they actually took the time to create the graphics for a burnt / burning tree.

The walkers in the first stage also leave footprints and the bomber over the neighborhood, depending on where you shoot it down will destroy the house or knock off the part it hits

Yes it really is, they can keep the bullet hells the music and the graphics in this are amazing. I actually play a lot more of the original Raiden for the simple reason I don’t get my ass kicked, Raiden 2 is close to impossible on normal arcade settings.

I discoverd Raiden 1 in arcade, like everyone, and i loved the game. Later, maybe 1996, my father bought me the playstation, and, sure, i took Raiden Project with the console. I still have the game today, and run it sometimes... like, just few minutes ago.

I was checking on Raiden 3 and 4. Explogion fragments animation is not even close Raiden 2. Some Grate animators work this Game out to this detail some of us Can apreatiate and some others cant see. Notice that this 2 animations are hand made, 3 and 4 is CG. Realy a grate game. To bad its so dam HARD.

I find it really strange that 3 and 4 have a higher resolution (at least it looks that way) and perfect animations but although all that they don't look better but worse. Just like the Simpsons. New episodes are smoothly animated but soulless, while the old were drawn and are more fun to watch (not to mention they're funny). They look a lot better in (my opinion) although or because they do not. Hard to explain. Probably Sprites can't be beaten after all.

The red crystals are the aliens (could be life or machine), their special ability lets them control almost all the weaponry and war machines on the earth, so you are basically fighting a bunch of crystals that control the whole earth's army. You can read further information and background story in playthrough of Raiden V.

Purple laser has its use in stage 7, since it's better at getting rid of the random asteroids than Vulcan can. Apart from that all the other shots just do everything that purple laser does better.

No way purple is weak. Only weak for bosses. If you press it and take a seconds break it’s actually as strong as blue, but once it’s in its tracker beam state yes it’s not as strong. I kick ass with purple. Reds only good if you play close like this guy.
