I prefer the more fictional gameplay of 'Merchants & Marauders' over Blackbeard, etc, for pirating. There's just more to it. It's like Sid Meier's Pirates in boardgame form.

Blackbeard (GMT) is not what I hoped. The art is very good but the gameplay is rather meh. I stick to Blackbeard (AH). That was what calandale played.

Hi, great review! I’m on the fence to buy this game or ”Target for Today”. You have reviewed both of them and I get that they are completely different thematically but in your opinion, which of these two are most immersive/RPG-like?

How does Compass compare with GMT in terms of production quality? Not sure I like the idea of flipping through a book to figure out my target - I think I prefer the cardstock charts in The Hunters / Silent Victory

I don't see any clear difference in quality between the components of "The Hunters" and "Raiders of the Deep" (I own both games). The "Raiders" box is very slightly thinner cardboard, but the cardboard is thicker than the old Avalon Hill game boxes, so it still retains a nice solid-feel, and it is the same depth (2 1/4") as the box for Silent Victory (which I also own). The "Raiders" box is semi-gloss, whereas the boxes for "The Hunters" and "Silent Victory" are very glossy. Regarding the charts, "Raiders of the Deep" has over 3600 historical named ship targets - "The Hunters" only has 570 and "Silent Victory" has 720 (so with those older games the targets fit onto just two double-sided cards) - I think the publisher went with a booklet for "Raiders" because all those targets would need 12 double-sided cards, and each year's targets take up multiple pages, so there would have been some flipping either way. Also, with 12 cards, if you don't keep them in order, things might get messy and confusing. I like that the booklet keeps my tabletop neater, but that's just my preference.

Are you sure you were using the damage tracks correctly? It looked to me like you were meant to start them at the top, then move them down, rather than start at different points depending on size and move them up. The non-top boxes were marked 'such and such type of ship sinks' rather than 'such and such type of ship start'.

You can do it either way. The rules state that you place them as shown in this video. However, it works just as well the other way too, and may even be more intuitive that way, considering the text in the boxes saying that it takes X number of hits to sink the ship.

The publisher used to work for Consim games and is now working for Compass. When with Consim, GMT did the actual production.
