I get that live practice and drills are much more integral towards improving sumo performance, but do you guys do any dedicated strength and conditioning work when you get together? Or is that something done more individually. I may be in the minority, but I love watching Rikishi doing Shiko and other S&C training just as much as the actual wrestling

We do shiko and butsukari at practice but most other strength or conditioning is done separately usually, tough to get everyone’s schedule lined up so we tend to focus on bouts and drills when we can all meet up

@@raijinsumoclub9986 thanks 👍 I was wondering as well, in amateur Sumo, what are the rules with face striking? Jared was able to use Tsuppari ( not sure how to spell it ) to the face in your latest tournament, but is it more along the lines of pushing only to unbalance, and not a full on palm strike like in Grand Sumo?

It can vary, typically they will go over rules before each tournament, it basically if it looks like it was meant to be a punch but with an open hand that’s a no no, slaps and pushing at the neck/face area is ok
