That was the automatic brake he was slapping back and forth, not the independent. If I remember correctly, the 1206 brake line was not connected, so the automatic would do nothing to the train. Furthermore, he was placing the automatic in emergency. Once that happens, it stays there until it's reset, requiring one minute to do so. The energy required to do what Denzel's character was doing would be tremendous. It wouldn't be accomplished by a flabby old man. It's obvious whatever "rail expert" hired to consult on this movie merely collected a paycheck, went home to a scotch and soda then laughed his hiney off.

The most realistic train movie I've seen is called "The Train." Set in France at the end of WW2, starring Burt Lancaster as a station master (seemed to be French equivalent to US Trainmaster), it actually took the effort to realistic portray rail operations. One scene in particular, where the locomotive was being uncoupled from the moving train, had Lancaster get into the position to pull the pin (link-and pin coupling), who then closes the air connection between engine and train, signal the man running the locomotive who is shown setting the independent brake, bunching the slack so Lancaster can pull the pin on the coupler, then shows the engineer releasing the brake and opening the throttle in order to run away from the train. Their plan was to cause a wreck, as the Nazis were attempting to move a train-load of valuable art out of France ahead of the advancing Allied Army. In the end, many people died to keep the art in France. I normally avoid watching movies about trains. Knowing a bit about rail operations makes it difficult to watch most Hollywood train movies as it seems little effort is made to get the facts about trains right. As it appears the case with the movie reviewed here.

Silver Streak, Runaway Train and Unstoppable are very realistic Train movies. They are loosely based on true runaway incidents that happened in the U.S. in 1953, 1962, and 2002.

Something I don't understand about the who CSX 8888 incident that the movie is based on is that the engineer apparently tried to set the dynamic brake before exiting the train to change the switch. But apparently he did not correctly setup the dynamic brake, which set the train to full throttle instead. But on the SD40-2, isn't the dynamic brake lever separate from the throttle? So how would that even happen? Are we to assume that the engineer used the wrong lever or does the SD40-2 come with an alternate control scheme that uses the throttle lever to also control the dynamic brake?

SPOILER 🚨 After frank notices that the runaway train was on the same track as his, dispatch tells him that there is a nearby siding, frank agrees but after a few math problems he told dispatch to realign the switch, frank keeps going on the mainline. After a few hours, Connie tells him that he might see triple 7’s nose any minute now. Dispatch switched frank onto a rip track. So now they are playing “chicken” with the runaway. Triple 7 ends up hitting the last boxcar of franks consist. After the end of triple 7’s consist passes franks locomotive, he notices the open coupler on the end of triple 7. So frank decided to decouple from his cars and chase after it in reverse and back onto the mainline. After a few minutes, Oscar Galvin (VP of operations) notices this on the news, he ordered Connie to switch them off of the main. Connie ignores Galvin and lets frank and will chase after it. After hours, they soon managed to hook up, but will notices that the grain car seal opened, Frank’s locomotive got grain all over it. After the grain had been emptied, Will saw that the pin didn’t fall, so frank tells him to go down there but be careful. Will manages to hook up 1206 to 777. Doing that his foot got caught up between the couplers. After getting back up onto 1206, Will was bleeding really bad. Frank asked if he was alright. Will says yes. After they were hooked up frank starts “tug of war” between 1206 and the runaway 777. Frank notices that they are speeding up. And not slowing down. So Will gave Frank an idea of manually brake the cars on triple 7 to make it slower. Please correct me if I’m wrong
