This was really informative thank you so much! Most videos skip over the important detail that is relevant to a prospective traveller, but this video nailed it.

Wait until ya see what Business Class is like on the Night Owl, Vermonter, and Downeaster and maybe the Cardinal on occasion! The cars used are the old 2-1 seaters that they used to use for First Class. Very roomy only 18 seats, so not ever a cramped feeling

At Penn, I use the LIRR commuter rail, so it’s different. You can see the AMTRAK tracks from LIRR platform level, though!

Business class on the Empire Service and maple leaf train is worth the money

Great report! Looks like business class is not worth the extra cost.

The one benefit I find between DC and NYC is the business class is less busy and thus quieter...but that's just my experience. The one free can of soda isn't really worth the upgrade ;-)

You do get about 8 inches of extra legroom in business class versus coach. Is it worth it? It depends on how busy it is. For a short trip, coach is perfectly fine. As for the seats themselves, I believe they are about the same age, and they're in the process of replacing them now with leather seats (yes, even in coach) I remember they last started renovating those cars around 2000. Before this renovation, the coaches had this really awful red interior - not to mention less legroom because those cars had 84 seats as opposed to the 72 they have now.

It's actually unlimited free non-alcoholic beverages on NE Regional. Not just one

Business class on Regional trains is just a money-grab hustle to sell more of what are not really any different than regular seats, at a higher price, when the other seats are sold out. They're not even reserved by seat number, so if the train is crowded and you can't easily find one you have to keep hunting around and wake up the person sleeping across two seats or stand in the vestibule until one opens up, the crew/conductors don't care at all.

Unfortunately, Amtrak falls short on their business class accommodations. The café/business class cars are old, the interiors need upgrading the food is just so-so. Not worth the upgrade cost at the moment.

Lordy, compared to European trains, Amtrak is like a horse and buggy. Don't even get me started on Penn Station...yuck!

As a European I was actually pleasantly surprised about the Amtrak train. I took it from Baltimore Airport to DC and back. The trains are a bit old but they aren't as horrible as people often make it sound.

You know, I get sick and tired of people comparing rail travel in the US to Europe or Asia or wherever. Our transportation needs and availabilities are different. We have major cities that, for better or worse, rely on mass transportation. Long ago, people decided that getting across country in hours was far better than getting across country in days. The only reason AMTRAK even exists is due to political pressure from nostalgia buffs who long for long ago. As far as Penn Station is concerned, what happened to it was a crime that hopefully will not be repeated. It is incomprehensible that there were people in authority who believed that a new sports venue was a better alternative than keeping Penn Station as it was. Now, the old post office building is the "new" Penn Station. The only resemblance between the two is the outside of the buildings. It's sad.
