I live in Washington, DC. Most of my family lives in Philly, and I travel to New York City at least once a year. Regarding the prices, the prices vary. Depending on what day you travel and what time of day it is, you can get discount prices, even on the Acela. The most popular times and days are usually more expensive and the less popular are less expensive. No need to book two months in advance. I laughed at your comment about the leg room. Not only is the Acela faster than the regional train, but they give you more leg room and more storage space. When I'm traveling north to Philly for the Christmas holidays, I always take the Acela because I not only have my luggage but I have an extra bag of Christmas gifts and I need the space and the least amount of hassle. On the Acela, you book your exact seat. On the regional, you take whatever seat is available in the coach section of the train. So, I try and book a seat on the Acela which gives me access to the most storage and a seat I've booked in advance. On my way back home, I take the regional because I'm carrying less stuff and I honestly don't care at that point. In that case, what I do try and do, when I'm boarding in Philly to go to DC on the regional is go to the back of the train where there is likely to be more seats available. Yeah, Wifi is not great on these trains. Whatever, it's not a long ride.

I always say the same thing... It's not about being stingy, Amtrak is expensive. Even more expensive if you compare it with other trains around the world, specially in Europe.

Thanks for the video. We moved to the US last year and have booked a few Amtrak trips already (including your same $31 connection from NYC to DC) and are very much looking forward to the experience! Your video has some useful info. I must say however that having lived in Germany for 7 years, I don't quite agree with your views on the pricing differences. Last minute bookings in Germany in my experience can also result in ridiculous prices. And unless you ride on the very expensive ICE, the cheaper RB trains have rather limited and much slower routes with too many train changes. If Amtrak needs anything, it's more high speed rail!
@dmac71284 ай бұрын
Amtrak's pricing structure is bonkers but other carriers around the world use variable ticket pricing based on time of trip and the time it was purchased before the trip. Business travelers often book at the last minute to conduct official travel. Since the tickets are paid for by the business and not the passenger, the carriers often charge premium rates whereas a tourist typically books in advance and can shop for the lower rates, tourist tickets are often cheaper. In my experience traveling in Britain, if you wanted a cheap fare, you would purchase a "cheap day return" ticket, that is a round trip ticket with the restriction that the return would have to take place on the same day. In Japan, if you bought a tourist package, you can get really good deals on the Shinkansen but if you book trips and the day you are traveling you will pay a higher fare and not even be guaranteed a seat on the train. However the differences in ticket prices are not nearly as much as it is on Amtrak. I suspect that Amtrak charges rates like this because they can. There's no competition and they are heavily regulated by the US government. The North East Corridor is the only profitable route and the profits are used to subsidize the rest of their services.

Can you kindly tell me whether there is any check-in (including luggage( check-in procedure at Penn Station or I just take on my luggage as with Deutsche Bahn when taking an ICE? I cannot see a booked seat on my ticket. Does it mean there is no seat reservation needed for this specific train? Danke für deine Antwort!

No, you don't have to check in your bag. Bring it along, just like in the ICE. The bag-compartments are much bigger than on German trains. PS: Gern geschehen und ganz viel Spaß! Mein Neid ist dir sicher :-)

Ther Regional base price is $31 ($20 for night trains) with the max being $206 Acela is $71 with the max being $337 It's not great but the price rises and falls with demand.

@shellyj9873 ай бұрын
The trains in Japan are state run whereby the trains here are only partially covered by the govt and are expected to make money to supplement the rest of the costs. That is why prices are higher and fluctuate based on demand, time of year and day of week traveled.

Amtrak is poorly funded, so Northeast prices are basically funding the whole system, since that is where there is enough demand to support high prices. And they own the tracks for the most part so they can prioritize there own service and not be at the mercy of freight trains

Part of a trip report is to review the product. So i have to compare the ride with my personal experiences, right? Are you really offended that I criticized the pricing and legroom? At the end i said that this trip was awesome and that i would take the train again and again and again. You can't be telling me that its a good thing that a plane ticket is cheaper than a train ticket? Even CNBC reported about this issue: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6OZf3uMmcmMpdk Especially in times of climate change, the most climate-friendly mode of transport should also be the best/cheapest choice for everyone. Dynamic pricing is not an US-only problem. Its the same with sleeper trains in europe or the Eurostars between UK and France/Belgium. For example, i'll travel to London next week. I could take the train, would only be 1 change from my hometown and it would be as fast as a plane from center to center. But this would cost me 600 € with my kids. With the plane i am only paying 100 €. Madness aswell! Greetings from the european side of the pound 🙂
