You can ride your own on both trails! I had brought my beach cruiser with me originally and had planned to bring that. They said I could do it, but didn't recommend it and I am VERY glad I switched to a bike with gears. I did the route of the hiawatha on my beach cruiser and that was fine, but there is a lot more pedaling involved if you do the full 34 mile Virginia creeper. Virginia Creeper Trail Bike Shop was great, super helpful and made it easy to extend our day.
