Railfanning New Carrollton, MD 11/24/19

Here is a video I made of trains at the New Carrollton Amtrak and MARC station in New Carrollton, MD. I was there during the morning hours from 8:30am to 12pm. I mainly went to the station for the high speed Amtrak trains as well as to see the MARC Commuter train. I also ended up catching AMTK 642 (ACS-64 Veterans Unit). This video also includes bonus clips at the end taking in Washington, DC at Third Street and Virginia Ave near the L' Enfant VRE Station.

When did they take the wire down on the third track? I remember in my older videos, when I went to New Carrollton back in the summer of 2019, the wires were still up, but they must’ve recently taken them down. Any ideas on what they may be doing?

I too also noticed that, but I don't live in the area, so I don't know what's what. But I believe CSX also uses this line to get their trains to Baltimore, so perhaps Amtrak dedicated that line to freight traffic.

Both the Palmetto AND the Cardinal going in the SAME direction at 100 miles an hour or so passing by New Carrollton within SECONDS of one another??? That's freaking awesome but isn't that dangerous??

One of the trains was running behind schedule, forgot which one. They both sounded their horns.

@@AmtrakandAWVRFan ^ Sorry, I don't quite understand. Don't mean to sound rude, but what does one of the trains running behind schedule have to do with anything? And that they both sounded their horns is also besides the point. My point is that they were traveling at a very high speed very close together. But maybe there are still several tracks in one direction running alongside one another before the trains have to slow down for Washington DC. Anyways, I love it! Don't mean to sound combative.

@@rominn2184 One of the trains was running late and fell into that train’s schedule. So dispatch aligned one of the trains to go on the opposite track, which would then be traveling in the opposing direction of the normal traffic. That’s how the race happened.

^ So you're saying one of those trains was racing on a track that would have otherwise been used for northbound traffic?

@@rominn2184 Yes, the NEC at New Carrolton has 2 mains. Amtrak does right hand running on the corridor. But if needed, a train would be aligned to the left hand track. This would cause a bit of congestion to opposing traffic, especially during the rush, but since trains ran Sunday schedule that day, there isn’t a lot of traffic.
