Very nice cab ride made at the begining of a splendid suny day. Ride often seen at the begining of the years 2000 at the Deutsche Bahn TV. Meanwhile the mountains, these landscapes around this valley and the turquoise waters of the Vorderrhein are always pleasant to see under the sun. Thank you for this video and for all infos given.

Thanks for the videos RR. Excellent, real life experience. Reminding me of waiting in Chur for the Bernina Express this past June. Wish those paralel gauge track switches were closer to platform to see them in action. Must be a pain to see them when driving the train. The track shift at Domat was also interesting. Good job and thanks again!

Note that from just west of Chur to Domat/Ems, the westbound track not only has the 1,000 mm gauge, but also the 1,435 mm gauge used by freight trains coming in on Swiss Federal Railways trackage for an industrial spur just west of Domat/Ems.

​@@viccaruso-nj2fvWhen the situation returns to normal, I recommend the dual gauge routes Chop - Halmeu and Valea Vișeului - Câmpulung la Tisa, Romania. When I traveled, on the legendary summer train Krakow - Constanta on the Black Sea, the first one, our train was hauled by a standard gauge locomotive of the Ukrainian railways, while we passed several broad gauge freight trains hauled by locomotives of the Romanian railways with the 'automatic coupling!

I did the route as part of a ride to Zug in 2022. The afternoon before that, I did some railspotting at Felsberg to see the SBB loco on the dual track. They pick up containertrains there for Coop (05:24) and bring them back to Chur and further on. Not all SBB freighttrains run to Ems Werk. Note the combined passenger + freighttrain at 18:25, carrying waterbottles from Valser in the containers at the back.

Very interesting, especially as regards the three-rail section (double gauge, normal and 1000 mm, i.e. 1 metres). Does anyone know whether this section is also controlled by the SBB (for example through electrical consents) with regard to the circulation of standard gauge trains running between Chur and Domat-Ems? Thank you very much for your availability and collaboration

I don't know the details, but I do remember that only some SBB locomotives (I think only one older class) can run on this dual-gauge part of the line as voltage on RhB is lower (11kV) than on the normal-gauge Swiss network (15kV) so only these old locos can run there. But how do they manage this operationally we need someone local to give us some hints. But we all must admit it is very practical and pragmatic solution.

This third.rail is seen, also, a few kilometers before LUZERN Main Station in the line from.Interlaken / Luzern via the Brunning pass, used by Zentralbahn and SBB/CFF/FSS in this little part.

hi i work at the rhaetian railway. As far as I know as soon as they drive out of chur they are controlled by RhB personal. It is true that only older lokomotives can drive there because of the voltage. Theres s rumour that someone once sent an ICE do domat ems and then got stuck. but it sure is very interesting how we always manage to make everything work somehow

​@@andrikoch8875Thank you very much for the response received. Here in Italy the only dual gauge route remaining is the one between Avigliano Lucania and Potenza Superiore / Potenza Santa Maria. Originally it had 4 rails, but following the replacement of the armament with rails having a greater weight per linear metre, it had to be transformed into 3 rails. Since for narrow gauge trains (belonging to the legendary former Calabro Lucane Railways) until a few years ago the color or green light still meant slowing down, along the dual gauge route there was a more unique than rare overlap of regulations . For example, the form delivered to the driver of the narrow gauge trains was still made of green paper, while the equivalent form delivered to the driver of the standard gauge trains was already printed on yellow paper.

The swap from left to right of the uncommon rail used by standard gauge trains and which is visible at minute 7:11, unless there is an error on my part, is not present in other videos posted on KZbin: is this a change made recently? Does anyone know its purpose? Perhaps to bring the carriages of certain new trains closer to the platform? Thanks a lot for the collaboration

The rail switches to get the RhB trains close to the platform. All trains from the RhB, not just the new ones. The standard gauge is wider so it has to move. Why the track is not all the way on the right, (so no switches needed) is not known by me.@@RailRelaxation

Between Chur and Domat Ems, the track on which the train is running is dual gauge (1435 and 1000 mm). The standard gauge is only for freight trains. Before some points you can see special light signals showing S (Schmalspur) or N (Normalspur)
