When I interviewed for a position back in '93, you as an operator were an independant contractor trained by Herzog to run and maintain the machine. You were on call 24/7/365. You had to supply your own vehicle and tools, were paid by the hr and a per diem. When you got the call, the machine was in transite or already on site, and you had 24 hrs to get to the machine. These were usually leased to the RR with the operator. Dam good money if you knew your job. Gypsy occupation for single guys only.

Well, that's one way to load a backhoe onto a work train. You'd have to be out of your mind to load it up like that!

Herzog Contracting is no second rate outfit. They are one of the largest and have been in the railroad business for 40 years. This Cartopper is a Patented machine. Herzog holds over a dozen patents on equipment that they have designed for railroad use. The Cat 428D weighs around 17K. They dont hire any knothead off the street to run a Cartopper. You have to have experience with a machine before you can train to operate the Cartopper. Which was two months training the last I knew.

A clever improvise but this is probably one of the many cases that just because you can, does not mean you should. I cannot imagine that they do this every time to unload rock.

I used to run backhoe and made 100 bucks when I bet my coworker that instead of driving half a mile to a gate to get on the other side of a fence that my trench had to cross I could jump over it with the backhoe. Pretty much the same procedure as this except up and over a fence and drop on the other side.not quite as high as a railcar but high enough to be nervous lol

The NS used a Cat 319D, and that's a 43,000 lb excavator on steel tracks. The Herzog Cartopper has special L-brackets on the bucket, mid mount frame, and stabilizers to keep it centered and allow it to slide along the top rail of the railcar. It has a hydraulicly driven winch and generator in the bucket. The Cartopper is used to load AND unload anything using various size buckets, a Herzog twist-o-wrist grapple and even an electro-magnet. Watch---These Backhoes are Awesome!----

I was wondering how the loading process went, I have a video of one being unloaded; that takes a little longer and the operator uses the boom to pull himself backwards. If Im correct, I think theres a hydraulic winch mounted in the front bucket to pull himself forward. Nice clip.

Although entertaining,having the backhoe bucket hanging off the edge of the street at the start was dangerous.Personally,I also wouldn't have drug it on the knuckle,but rather bottom of the bucket.Much more stable,and then you wouldn't need a strap to drag it,just use the front bucket as a slide,and the backoe do push it on.Same for getting down.

why do people crank it wide open when they're doing slow, technical stuff like that? lot less jerky if you just use lower throttle.

for those saying "build a ramp" steel tracks tend to slip a lot on a steel ramp. you can climb anything with a backhoe if you have time

That railcar has a 263,000 gross capacity with 63,000 being the weight of the railcar and 200,000 lbs of rock. The dead load of the backhoe is at least 30,000 lbs plus live load reaction. I am surprised the Federal Railroad Administration would allow this since the railcar would be overloaded. How'd they get around that?

pretty cool. I can lod a backhoe on the back of a semi like this, but its only about 4 ' off the ground..That looks like some scarey shit to do for the first time. wonder what went through the operators mind when they first came up with this idea????

The operator is trained and employed directly by Herzog Rail Systems to operate the machines; they do not work for the railroads.

way too much stress sitting on back of bucket (main reason his bushings are worn out and bucket flops around). If you put any serious weight on a backhoe or excavator, you'd best either have bucket flat on ground (or preferably, bucket out and teeth in ground)

Got to be hard on the links that connect the dipper and the bucket. Notice how the bottom of the bucket isn't even touching the ground I see that special device pulling backhoe loader on car. Looks like you used a forklift or something to lift the front end because the front bucket wouldn't quite reach that device you probably have on a winch. I thought there was some gimmicks to this trick. I'm not impressed!

What would be the purpose of doing this? I imagine they couldn't transport like that for obvious reasons. So is it to unload material (I assume coal/rocks/debris?) Or what?
@sandy1979brat

+Chino Antrax Yes, they would unload the material from the railcar (rocks, coal, even sugar beets!) My dad did this for years.
