Passing the Outer Schengen Border between Ukraine and Hungary; We took the sleeper car Kiev - Budapest; Wheel bogies were exchanged from Russian Gauge (1520 mm) to the European Standard Gauge (1435 mm) at the Ukrainian border station of Chop; The train was then hauled over the Tisza River, which marks the border between Ukraine and Hungary (Schengen Zone), to the small Hungarian border town of Zahony;

Great film about the 1520/1435mm rail infrastructure interface. Couldn't have made it any better myself. It must be a difficult task to change the bogies out in the open air especially during the winter months, unlike the situation at Брэст, Беларусь where its done in a building. I noted that the 1520mm track sees little use over the border into Hungary, whereas both gauges over the Polish/Беларусь border are very heavily used.

I believe the tracks around Chop were modernized (and a 1520 mm option was added) sometimes after the Second World War when the new border between the Soviet Union with the neighbouring countries (Czechoslovakia, Romania and Hungary) was established; During Soviet times I believe there must have been much more traffic (both on the 1435 and 1520 spur); after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, cargo was moved more and more by trucks; Moreover, the bad Economic development of Ukraine in the past 25 years also led to a decline in rail cargo traffic

From what I’ve gathered so far, the same train as moved westward (increased film speed bit) as a European guage train, changed guages at Chop, and is now going out back eastward on Russian guage track . Nifty!

It might be the same train, but the speedy part is the same footage as the normal speed one. The train crossed border on river Tisza on bridge, from Ukraine to Hungary. Chop train station is on the ukrainian side, that’s where the changing happens. The train used the EU tracks on the bridge, and it’s clearly visible that the soviet tracks were not used for a long time. So when a train goes from Ukraine to Hungary, it is on soviet tracks in Ukraine > train arrives in Chop station on soviet tracks > moves to bogie change facility, change happens > train goes back to Chop station now on EU tracks, still in Ukraine > crosses border on bridge from Ukraine to Hungary > arrives at Záhony station in Hungary

Great video ! Thanks for posting here ! I would like to ask, if you in future will record railway border Ukraine - Slovakia (Chop - Cierna nad Tisou), because it could be very interesting. But the disadvantage is that over line runs only two pairs of train during day :-/

procedure is quite similar, although I have the impression it's doing a little better (Čierna nad Tisou is one of Slovakia's biggest rail yards). I was there in Nov 2016.

There are classification railway yards around the area where usually the freight trains go, that's where you can go if you follow the 1520mm gauge

The state border between Ukraine and Hungary on this stretch passes through the railway bridge . Then who serves this bridge : Ukrainian or Hungarian railway workers ? The Ukrainian side at the entrance of the bridge to set a border booth, and on the Hungarian side of the bridge box is empty , why? Why not haul portion of the electrified ?

Зачем на всех? Промежуточный вагон ставят - с одной его стороны - винтовая, с другой - СА-3. Там такой состав проходил, первый вагон был венгерский.

If I want to Hungary (diesel single-track railway), I can take the express train. If I want to Slovakia (electrified double-track railway), there are only a few (if any) ordinary passenger trains between Chop and Čierna nad Tisou:/

Видос великолепный, но конец печальный- уезжали из Чопа, вроде бы вьехали в Венгрию, а всё равно оказались в Чопе, как будто бы и не уезжали. И всё время скрипит не то вагоны, не то само полотно, того гляди, всё развалится.

Скрипит в месте соединения тележки с корпусом вагона при прохождении кривых малого радиуса. Это нормальное явление для вагонов, особенно если тележки очень часто меняют.

The same thing is done at the border between Moldova and Romania. The daily train between Chisinau, Moldova and Bucharest operates with Russian and Ukrainian built rolling stock like the train in the video and Moldova's railways are built to the Russian broad gauge.

I've never heard of a way to buy tickets outside Romania or Moldova but at the same time as you point out Ive never seen the train full. There always seems to be plenty of space and except for once when I rode it with a group, the Young Pioneer Tours Eurasian Adventure Tour, I've always had a two berth second class room to myself.
