At the very least it wouldve been extremely close between Checo and Sainz, probably Sainz still coming behind Checo, but close behind and with the advantage on the warmer tires. But thats racing too. Sometimes u and ur team do everything right, yet still need a little luck to get the win, like Checo. And sometimes a chance for a win turns into a frustrating almost thanks to a lapped driver ignoring blue flags for ½ a lap, like Sainz. While I do feel for Sainz, he really deserved his first win and needs it too after the awful season so far, overall I think, the race ended with the right winner, and I also really loved seeing Checo win, especially after the team order last week, and hes been clearly faster than Max all weekend and did a perfect race. I think a Red Flag 'lite' could be added to the options. Under a Diet Red, cars line up in race order at the pit lane exit, no restart warning. Lights can go grees as soon as is safe. Teams can work on cars if they wish, but may lose position if they do. If you miss your place in the line because you took tyres, you cannot cut back in line, you must join the back of the line when you leave your box. Green lights will also not wait for boxed cars, box at yor own risk. This would result in position changes during a race stoppage, but I think it's fair.

Gasly kicked off the intermediates stints followed by vettel, and it was the faster tyre then already, he was able to pass full wet running cars on track. @@rjfaber1991 i seriously doubt that. This is Monaco, 'defending' on this track is, in the vast majority of cases, accomplished by just driving like you normally would. The pace difference must be enormous before defending is something norris would have to do here. You don't have to believe me, you may just have a look at how Hamiltons race went behind alonso after the red flag restart. Alonso was so incredibly slow that not long after the restart the car in front of him already had a free pitstop, which incidentally was norris I believe. And I for my part did not see alonso doing any defense moves at all, or better said, I didn't see Hamilton managing to mount even an attempt at overtaking him.

Even if Monaco gives dull races from a spectator POV, I think it's great to show how good drivers are, and this means that we should watch Monaco through another lens. Drivers have to be perfect to get a good result, and this is interesting on itself. Also, the strategy is key and has to be perfect, and this comes not only from the engineers and strategists but also from the drivers, case in point: Sainz telling his engineer why he thought that going straight to slicks was the better choice.

Prompted by Toto's comment about reconfiguring the track, I went to Google Maps to see what might be possible. It looks like the track could continue along the Avenue John F. Kennedy instead of turning into the Nouvelle Chicane after the tunnel. There's already a chicane of sorts just before Tabac where Route de la Piscine connects to JFK, and room for runoff. This extended straight would allow for a true, hard-stop overtaking opportunity (with the option of DRS if necessary) without onerous modifications to the circuit.

i feel like an important thing to note is that when Sainz left the pitlane with his hards he got passed by Latifi and even though Latifi got the Blue Flag almost immediately he wasnt able to let him pass until the tunnel which meant that Sainz couldn't catch up to Perez for half a lap that he would have needed to win the race.

Maybe we should do only quali laps in Monaco? Like do Q1, Q2, and then 5 Q3 during the weekend while allowing to change setup and so on. A best lap for a given Q3 is worth 5 points, etc...
@ShadowWolfe2 жыл бұрын
With Vertappen's lack of a penalty, I actually like that new rule a bit better. Sometimes drivers can't control if so much as a centimeter goes across the line, and it's so miniscule of a difference that it's silly to penalize someone for it. Also, the cars shouldn't be changed to keep Monaco. It's more Monaco than the cars at this point.
@travis85112 жыл бұрын
I agree about Monaco being Monaco, however, I think the cars should be changed to reduce weight and size. It makes racing so much better. I don't think it will happen though, because of the safety systems and crash structures.

As always when we're talkng about the future of Monaco GP, I suggest to change format from classic GP race, to Hotlap Tournament acting Prologue of sprint season. Monaco is perfect to do so - tight, demanding track and suspense of 1v1 Hotlap Battles for each driver in the bracket. At the same time, we're determining starting grid order for the next Sprint Race, without ruining GP Race, as was done in Imola.

Idea to help Monaco…. institute mandatory joker laps down pit road. Monaco is usually 78 laps. So mandate that each car must run 4 joker laps throughout the Grand Prix. A joker lap would just be a drive thru of the pit lane at pit speed without stopping in their box. It would release the faster cars stuck behind slower ones and add more strategy as to when they take them.

One of those cases where Red Bull didn't win, but rather Ferrari lost.
@Bootes_Void2 жыл бұрын
Not true, Ferrari did everything that they needed to do but got thrown off by Red Bull’s early and unexpected risky Checo attack with that tyre change to intermediates and putting a massive 7 second faster lap. They got knocked the fuck out and didn’t know where they were standing anymore. Even if they would’ve pitted Leclerc on the next lap after Checo, it would’ve been still game over for them.

@@Bootes_Void Well, in my view telling Charles to pit and then immediately saying "no, don't pit" is not what they needed to do
@Bootes_Void2 жыл бұрын
@@LPChipi exactly, they didn’t know what to do anymore to get back at checo so what do they do? …they went and screwed it all up a little more and this time Verstappen took advantage of that. Monaco is a strategy race and all about the track position and Red Bull took all the risks aiming for a massive undercut since they were already behind and had nothing to lose so even if they wanted to, Ferrari wasn’t going to get that first position back after checo’s first stop.

Red Bull signing perez has proved to be one of the best driver moves for both team and driver in recent history, he's seriously closed the gap to Max this year. Done a better job than Gasly or Albon ever did, though I'd argue they both could've been given more of a chance...

I would say that the reason verstappen got away with the pit lane exit ordeal would be the "force majeure" aspect of the rule. Force Majeure means 'act of god' and rain could fall under that. it was a wet track and a wet pit exit and he oversteered and was correcting, so I would guess that the stewards utilised that part of the rule. same reason lando didn't get a penalty in russia last year when he was coming in to pit. He was on dry tyres on a wet track and crossed the line.

I love Monaco and hope it stays, especially after driving it with friends online, but the broadcast direction needs to be done by the F1 team, and not the locals. The F1 team is far from perfect, but they manage to miss a lot less than whoever does the Monaco broadcast... If Monaco won't budge on that, fuck em. F1 is for the viewers. Right?

They should build replicas of the cars first used in monaco in the 50s, and have the drivers race in those just for the monaco race. where each car is exactly the same spec. a throw back to how far the cars have come, and a different type of spectacle to honor the old cars. You could even throw in old F1 champs to race against the current generation of drivers.

There seems to be a lot of confusion what time limit was reached. I have seen lots of places where it was written it was the 2 hour limit that was reached. (The race clock apparently started 5 minutes before the race start, and with Perez' time being listed as almost 2 hours there is some support for that.)
@Reydriel2 жыл бұрын
I wonder why they even changed the pit exit line rule in the first place. This newer version is less restrictive (less safe) and also harder to enforce, since you now have to check if the entire tyre crosses the line instead of just any part of the car. If they wanted to give exiting cars more space... why not just paint a new line? lol

Perez under-cut Leclerc during the first round of pitstops, and then both Red Bulls over-cut the Ferraris in the second round. I agree that in hindsight Ferrari's strategy looked much worse Also Perez's times looked slower when he came out behind Norris, and when he showed his true pace, it was already too late for Leclerc

Glad to see a Haas split at the gearbox and not the fuel tank. That is a real pat on the back for the FIA & FOM teams in eliminating this issue from the new car design. Extra weight well spent it seems, despite Halo levels of complaints about it.

I believe the VSC first and then safety car second is because of these race directors being ex-GT directors. It is the norm for them to throw a VSC immediately and run at VSC for a few minutes before switching to full safety car. They seem to have been doing it a few times and it makes sense given then new directors histories.

Monaco still belongs on the calendar as a qualifying and strategy focused race
@josephwhitaker65742 жыл бұрын
But why? Why not replace it with a circuit that has both good qualifying and a good strategy focused race? We need to get with the times and either adjust the circuit or make the cars smaller. Monaco doesn't deserve to be on the calendar just because of it's history. It should have to fight with every other circuit for entertainment purposes.

I kind of feel like all the race start shenanigans were caused by ferrari not wanting to risk their pole in wet conditions, which in the end bite them in the bottoms very hard. Kind of instant Karma for Ferrari International Assistance. Regarding the Monaco track -its a great layout, but it was made for cars the size of bathtubs on wheels. Current cars are the size of a school bus and can barely fit there

the things that make the cars unsuitable for monaco are the same things that make them hard to race in general, so having monaco in mind when designing regs is surely a good thing more than anything though i like the history of monaco, and i think it should be kept, but made into more of a special event with that history in mind. more about the history and heritage of f1, less focus on it being a championship race. i also think it doesnt need to happen every year, every other year would be good imo

Eduardo Freitas’ communication with the teams is broadcast during WEC races. The audience always knows what decisions race control makes and why. F1 could learn from their example.

Monaco just needs two good overtaking spaces, that would fix the whole race. You know, good spaces without having to be on a 12+ second a lap advantage on the car in-front like Gasly had. The size of the card doesn't help, but if they could adjust the streets to help create a space for an overtake, Monaco would be staying for a long time. The track itself is unique and fantastic to drive, unlike most of the street circuits. Baku excluded, I love that circuit too.
