Surely the best on screen version of Maugham’s novel. Photography and adaptation are pure cinematic gems. Milestone was a very talented filmmaker. (And a two Oscar®awards winner...).

Well, your posting this film has led me to Amazon where I just bought all of Maugham's works on Kindle for a mere two bucks. I have read Of Human Bondage of course, but most of the others are new to me. Looks like I will be busy indulging in his books and this film today. Thanks!

Read The Razors Edge. They made it into a movie in 1945.

You’ll enjoy it. Maugham is the kind of writer who tells of human experiences adroitly.

Did you watch this film? It includes suicide, rape and moral hypocrisy. Not at all "happy life to live and full of joy & cheers".

A fascinating allegorical study of paradise. From those that have created it and offer of its riches towards those who either simply accept it at face value or as something to be further defined. While some may even wish to destroy paradise, we will most fortunately always have those that recognize it clearly and embrace it fully.

Easily Joan Crawford's best early performance, though she didn't think so at the time.
@robertdoherty20019 ай бұрын
What bothered her much more - so legend has it - was the film’s financial and critical failure. She received a lot of flack from her fans; she felt she’d disappointed them. Also her bid to emerge as a more classical actress had failed. Upon returning to MGM she was put back into vacuous, glamorous nothings. I’d rather watch ‘’Rain’’ than ‘’Forsaking All Others’’, ‘’Chained’’ or ‘’Sadie McKee’’.

Thanks for posting this great restoration. I have seen another edit which is a bit more explicit at the end, but you get the picture regardless.

Have heard the author wrote this story after being in Hilo Hawaii and experiencing the seemingly endless rains of that nice little city.

Have seen ‘’Rain’’ many times including borrowing an (edited) 16mm. print from the library. Several VHS and DVD copies later, all a bit ratty. So, restored at last.

Why no Oscar nom for Joan?
@valsainking9 ай бұрын
My feelings exactly, but I suspect MGM's internal Oscar-related politics were to blame. It's a shame too because she is just incandescent as Sadie. By the way, she also deserved a nomination for her role as Flaemmchen in Grand Hotel (1932)... 1932 was obviously a very good year for her. Sigh! 😮💨😒

Yes, I had forgotten she was loaned out to UA by MGM for this film.@@valsainking

"Restored" refers to the sound and video. A 2K scan was made off the original negative, and from it we did as digital restoration. This preserves the movie forever. in superior quality Thanks for watching!

I always liked Joan a bit better than Bette Davis. Two years later Bette won for Of Human Bondage, same author. I think Joan is just as good and more natural. That mid-atlantic accent of Bette's didn't always work for every role. A lot are critical of Joan's looks, but I think she is stunning. Joan came from a hard background, Bette came from a pretentious one.
