Rainbow was formed by Ritchie Blackmore in 1975 after he left Deep Purple at the height of their fame. They were instantly successful and released a string of hit albums, with an ever changing line-up, between 1975 and 1983 when Blackmore broke up the group to join the reformed Deep Purple.
This concert from their European tour in 1977 features the line-up responsible for the "Long Live Rock'n'Roll" album released later that year, including vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell.
Blackmore had to be smuggled out of Austria after a trouble with the police at a gig two nights earlier and was very late arriving in Munich, all of which seemed to inspire both the band and the audience to create a truly remarkable gig.

Had the fret board neck etc had that done in white acrylic. Just a damn shame i am full of crippling arthritis. At least I can slam on my Sony studio monitors headphones 🎧 and crank it to the last notch on the volume button that says You really shouldn't. Enjoy yall

I grew up in this time period where you had to buy records to hear this amazing rock music. Wore out my copy a long time ago but somehow it still plays quite scratchy but it takes you to the time where Blackmore & Dio & Powell were truly Kings. Everytime I hear this amazing live version it gives me goosebumps like the first time I heard it. I'm 61 now and still rocking! How about you guys? Long live rock & roll!

Hi Steve.. Yea I'm Sixty myself. Over the last decades I,ve been bringing up a family, work commitments etc etc. I had heard of Rainbow but never heard them other than the chart hit or two. I was a big Hendrix fan and saw "Hey Jo" on UTube.. "Give it a listen" I thought. One of Hendrix most Iconic songs after all.. Started listening.. "This aint Hendrix"! I thought.. Looked again and it was a cover by deep purple!! Was gonna turn it of then a voice said unto me.. "Listen to it u Burk"!! Lol... Began with a Mexican style sound.. Then Ritchie Blackmore kicked in and to cut a long story short.. It was better than Hendrix version. I had to re evaluate my opinions as they say. Ritchie's solo is sensational.. His Guitar was simply Screaming despair.. Looked for more of Ritchie Blackmore and here I am so to speak. Found out later that the Deep Purple cover of Hey Jo was done in New York and Jimi Hendrix was actually at the club listening and acknowledged Ritchie's playing as Incredible.. Kill the King is sensational huh!! I like Green sleeves also.. Sure Henry the VIII would have approved! Not sure how he would have responded to "Kill the King however"!! Lol

I am 61 years old too ! I first heard this album in high school and I loved it then as much as I love it now. I regret not being in Germany to see these concerts when I was 16 (I was born to a German mother there but came to the states when I was small) but if I could invent a time machine I would be there, as I am sure you would be too… it seems we have a “60-year-old rocker club” going here ! …So a shout out to my “60 year old rocker brothers” !…. Aren’t you glad we lived through a time when we got to experience this excellent music as it was made?

Man, getting to follow Rainbow for over 40 years seems like such a special privilege. As much as I hate all of those comments saying I'm only X years old but at least I still listen to real music, I'm about to join that club for the first time. I'm 35, and I've been actively gigging on everything from sax and percussion all the way over to guitar and upright bass for just under 25 years now. That includes plenty of time spent playing all sorts of classical and jazz stuff that I never really had much interest in, but I've mainly spent that time bouncing around under the entire rock and roll umbrella all the way from rockabilly to thrash, doom, and death metal, and that's not a statement that's meant to pat myself on the back or jerk myself off or anything like that. It's just a bit of perspective about where exactly I'm coming from, and what caliber of musicians I aspire to play like. With that said, there isn't a person on this planet who could convince me that a stronger band has ever existed than Ronnie, Ritchie, and Cozy in Rainbow, and I have no problem applying that statement equally to both the Rising and Long Live Rock 'n' Roll lineups. Getting to look back at them now, it seems easy to say that despite the fact that all of their most talented contemporaries are pretty much universally considered to be the greatest rock bands of all time, Rainbow in 1977 was just absolutely untouchable, and they're still just as untouchable now. When you're talking about players like Ritchie and Cozy and comparing them to the other genuine all time greats, I think it's safe to say that at that level of playing and musicianship, it's always going to come down to taste, who and what you like, and whatever it is that sounds best to you. I'm not about to sit here spending my time casually arguing with people on the internet about how they're objectively the greatest guitarist and drummer of all time, together or individually. I'm usually not about to waste my time discussing music or art with anyone who even tries to view it objectively like that though because that just isn't how it works. When it comes to Ronnie though? He can turn me right into the worst kind of hypocrite without any kind of thought because he was just that damn good. He was a total anomaly who came out of the womb with all the natural talent and ability anyone could ever hope to have, and physically speaking, despite his size, he just so happened to be built absolutely fucking perfectly. He could have had an amazing 6+ decade career singing any style of music that he ever could have wanted to touch and stood with the giants. As far as all things rock and metal go though, and this isn't meant to take anything away at all from the Robert Plants and Freddie Mercurys of the world because honestly, how could you, but Ronnie was just a genuinely special, once in a lifetime talent who was the total package right down to the core. In my personal (and pretty obviously biased) opinion, those guys at their absolute best couldn't carry Ronnie's jock at his absolute worst. He was one of the rare few who just never lost it, and depending on your opinion, you might even say he was one of the even rarer few whose voice got better with age. Back in August of 2009, I was fortunate enough to be a handful of rows from the stage for what turned out to be Ronnie's second to last show ever. I've never seen anything like it, and I'm sure I never will. I knew it on that night just as surely as I know it on this night. The only thing I can think of that was more unbelievable than what he did onstage that night was finding out a few months later that he was doing everything he did that night while he was just unknowingly riddled with stage 4 cancer and actively dying in front of us. I still can't believe what I was fortunate enough to see him do less than 9 months before he passed away.

Most people alive from that era would have Ritchie Blackmore on their short lists of "greatest guitarists who ever lived." There are a lot of us from back then who would have paid big money to watch Blackmore go up on that stage by himself and shred for two hours. And for my money Dio did his very best work with Rainbow. He helped cement Rainbow's reputation as a great _band_ and not just an ego project for a famous guitarist.

Rainbow - Kill The King - Meaning of the song Despite the violent imagery in this maniacally fast rock song, lead singer Ronnie James Dio claimed it is about a chess game. This originally was Rainbow's debut in the UK singles chart, peaking at #44. After the commercial success of "Since You've Been Gone," "All Night Long" and "I Surrender," "Kill the King" was re-released in 1981 this time climbing to #41. Since mid-1976, "Kill the King" had been a fixture of the Rainbow tour setlists, starting every show. It was first released in 1977 on the live album On Stage. The title tune and "Kill the King" were the sole songs performed in the 1977-78 concerts, however "L.A. Connection" was given a few performances on the US tour before being deleted from the set. Dio's solo gigs featured a live version of "Kill the King," "Gates of Babylon," and the title track from 2004 until his death in 2010.

What do you mean by best? Coming from an Ozzy, Dio, Halford, Dickenson, Plante, etc fan? Dio was such a wonderful singer and song writer. RIP.

Geoff Tate is the best, but he didn't have the benefit of really great songs.

@@grahameglinton5424 ANY genre ??.. That's a mighty big call !.. Three people who know a little bit about singing ( Freddie Mercury, Celine Dion, and Dame Joan Sutherland).. Gave that mantle to John Farnham..

I saw Rainbow a year earlier in Munich, but couldn't go to that one, my mate was there and, as said above, Ritchie arrived at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning when some of the audience had already left. That inspired the band indeed, my mate said that Ronnie told the audience, "they would see the best rock'n'roll concert ever".
