Rainbow sharks are tank bosses! I have always had one since my first tank 15 years ago. They look good and will go everywhere (top, bottom, middle) in an aquarium. Rainbow sharks also are great "showcase" fish in a community tank. Easy to care for and hearty, my first one lived about 10 years and it came from my mom as a 10gal starter tank and a $10 gift card from Walmart for my son (first tank in the house). I did get a 30gal a few months later as I kinda started to really enjoy fish keeping and moved him to the bigger tank. I think that I will always have a rainbow shark as long as I keep an aquarium in my house because it's the fish I "watch" when I'm staring at my tank.

Agreed, granted I have 3 different colored glofish sharks. Basically identical other than color. It’s fun watching them chase others out of their territory. I recently got some pea puffers and it’s been fun watching them swim around too, but those sharks are so intense, they sit, they watch, then bam out of no where full force swimming to scare the fish away lol. I felt bad at first but it never hurts the fish, plus it feels like the tetras neon and glolight love to just go to its cave to get it to come out which makes me smile because I love seeing it out and about

I lost my 6 inch rainbow shark a month ago had it for a year and a half. Just bought a new one that's one inch long. Can't wait to watch it grow back into a new show piece fish for my 35 gallon with my 6 inch opaline gourami. The red and black and the blue and black contrast so well and ones more mid top ones bottom mid it just works.

I looove the rainbow shark I have one with my tiger/rosy barb tank and it’s got so much personality. they get along well with the tigers and rosys and it likes to nibble at my arm when I need to work on replanting or moving something in the tank

Good video, thanks! I have an orange and a pink glo variety in a planted 36 bow with danios tiger barbs tetras and corys. Beautiful fish. Somewhat territorial but they get along well. They actually play together at times. I’d point out that these fish are nocturnal and like caves. I added one at a time so the first was bigger and had claimed the large cave. Maybe it helped they weren’t the same size and it wasn’t an option for the smaller one. Both full grown now for 6 months or so. The newer blue ones look awesome, wish I had tank space!

I have a 250l tank with two red tails, two rainbows and two albino rainbows and they never really fight and have had no problems with them for the two years i've had them. They get along as far as I'm aware, but I do agree if you tend to only have two sharks in a small tank the stronger one will kill the other one eventually but if you have a few sharks the aggression is shared and they should be fine.

I would like to add that I had a female rainbow shark that was soooo dosile. Since her passing I ended up with 2 males that were both intolerable to tank mates lol. Fun fish and alart of the "cleaning crew".

I have 4 of them. They are finicky eaters. I gave them Hikari Cichlid pellets (soaked til soft then mushed and fed 1-2 pellets at a time) and they LOVE them. They come up to the front when they see me (like Cichlids) and noticeable growth.

Love rainbow sharks. My guy is currently 6” and girthy. I would say a 40 gallon minimum for a large adult especially one like mine. I’ve kept my one for almost 7 years which is currently my oldest fish.

My beautiful boy Wrex had to be reluctantly given to my LFS because he didn't like my Siamese Algae Eater and started getting very snappy at him, despite being shy as a juvenile (that's how they trick you!). But then they were in a 180L tank so I think lack of space may have been a factor (they were both the same size, around 5"). I have plans to upgrade to a big 4ft 240L one soon (as in, purchased and currently on the way), once it's cycled and my current community go in and settle, I'm going back to the store and bringing him home. I miss him every day since I let him go :( Also, I read one some websites they "eat" smaller tetra. I kept my big guy with all manner of tetra communities throughout his 5 year lifespan and nothing ever became a snack.

I’m pretty new to the hobby, so I expect anything I can keep alive could be classified as beginner friendly. I just use the lights that come with the tank and don’t have co2. Go for any type of anubias and tie the roots to rocks in your tank. It’s really sturdy and as long as you’ve got something to eat algae off the leaves, it’ll be happy. Java ferns are the same way but have more delicate leaves, so it might be easier for an aggressively curious fish to hurt it. Java moss on rocks in the front. Then something tall like Pearl weed or ludwiggia in the back. Anything that floats grows like mad. But some fish eat them and that’s not always good for the fish, so research that. Red root floatersare cool. They’d prolly cast neat shadows on the red fins on your rainbow shark. Or you could do something green like water lettuce, salvinia, or duckweed. Be careful with duckweed though. If you really like it, it’ll grow well for you. If you only kinda like it, too bad cos it’s gonna take over and get absolutely everywhere and invade your other fish tanks. I’ve never kept a rainbow shark, so idk about tank mates. But they seem pretty cool.

rainbow shark get along with most fishes, except other sharks. Trust me, learned that the hard way. You throw 12 rainbow shark in any tank, like some people suggest, and that will be a party to remember. You can even charge for tickets to your living room to watch the fight. LOL. One per tank is what works for me semi-peacefully.

I was fortunate enough to successfully keep a rainbow as my centerpiece in a 12 gallon tank with about 6 danios. His domain was the large Roman coliseum hide in the bottom/middle layer. He would stay mostly in there and the shoaling fish didn’t bother him. I would place his wafer near his favorite doorway. He lived about 4 years. RIP Jack the Nipper

I kept one in my 65 gallon. This was when I was new to fishkeeping. It had a pair of angels, a pleco the rainbow shark and a nice sized school of cardinal tetras. It was 36”x18”x24” My mom also named the pleco “Dotty”. Dotty was the star of the tank. The tank also had white sand and a big piece of hollowed out mopani wood in it.

I had a male-female pair and they mated. But nothing spawned. I couldn't provide them the right conditions. If possible please provide me with some informations on that. Thank you ☺

Hey, I don't have a rainbow shark, but a red tail shark. For some weeks now he has been acting strange. He seems to be scratching himself on the grave or a catappa leaf, especially when is chasing my tetra. I thought IT might be parasites, but his colours are good and he is eating as always. Is this normal behaviour? He has some lighter patches now where he 'scratches' himself and i'm getting worried.

My albino rainbow shark just died. They were almost 4 years old and I found them dried up next to the holding tank (with a lid, I guess there was a gap) I was keeping them while I rescaped my larger tank. Even though they were just a fish I genuinely cared about them, and now I feel terrible. Not sure if I should replace them with another albino rainbow shark or a different shark, or an all together different fish species.

My Rainbow is doing fine with my South American Cichlids. I do not have a lot of them, but they get a long alright. My South American tank has 2 Jack Dempseys,Male Convict,Male Firemouth, 1 large festivum, and a Pictus Cat. Time will tell if he gets aggressive, but I think the Cichlids will hold their own, but not sure how he will do with my Pictus Cat.

I had a glow shark and added a rainbow shark afterwards at first they fought but then divided the tank up however my glow shark is now always hiding in neon blue fake plant at all times, occasionally leaves but goes back in it again! My favorite fish in my 270gal tank, it's 4ft wide x 5ft long x 2 1/2-3ft deep depending on water height at the time. She is almost 6in long now and is in there with 3 Siamese Algae Eaters, 16 Buenos Aires Tetras, 16 Congo Tetras, and 9 Albino Cories. The Algae eaters are also grown, and were kind of dumped on me over a year ago by a friend that was going to flush them if someone didn't take them as they were causing problems in her 29gal tank. I was expecting WW3 for months and had a separate 55gal ready to move Harley (the RBS) to if needed.... There were a few little posturing episodes here and there for a couple of weeks and then it was like she just decided that the tank was big enough for all of them. It's strange watching them grazing within inches of each other and not reacting. I am not sure if she is just really calm for a RBS or if it is because of the size of the tank and/or all of the other fish... I definitely wouldn't recommend anyone do that on purpose, have those together. But now I find myself trying to find others with similar situations to talk to about it and trying to figure out if I should keep the other tank empty and ready, or just putting it to use with other fish... Any onsite would be greatly appreciated.

I have an albino rainbow shark in a 55 gallon tank and out of nowhere his fins started having their color washed away then he started being pretty inactive and laying on the floor. Now he swims weird and floats on his side sometimes. I’ve had him about a month and he’s around 2 inches and kinda skinny. Maybe he’s just malnourished and I need to feed him better or something. Do red-tailed sharks eat algae too? I haven’t had one since the 70s. They were one of my father’s favorite fish. Never had a rainbow shark... but now... Will either shark get along with 6-8” clown loaches?

Both should be compatible with the clowns. Red tails will nibble a bit on algae but not nearly as well as a rainbow
