This is the one i was waiting for to really put Rarity into perspective to understand why she is the best pony of the cast. Yes she can be a drama queen and melodramatic but at heart she fully believes everyone is beautiful/ handsome and deserves to feel as such. Rarity is the type of pony that knows the difference between, "that dress looks good on you" vs "you look good in that dress". Even as the designer of the dresses she would compliment the pony over the dress, that the dress accents their natural beauty and charm.

Yes, much like Pinkie, Rarity has her funny moments, but she's also elegant, and impressive. She's one of two ponies who had a dream at the start of the show, then achieved it with flying colours through hard work and dedication. Between her and Rainbow though, I think Rainbow has had far worse episodes in the later seasons. I think a good 60% of what makes Rarity work is Tabitha though, and the great lines she adds.

thing is about rainbow's first dress, because she gave no real feedback at all, Rarity had to design it herself, so that was the dress Rarity THOUGHT Rainbow Dash would design. that's kind of why it actually wasn't that bad. Fluttershy was basically playing the couch quarterback type, the internet expert, the one that reads all about a subject and claims to be an expert but never actually worked in that field. the people that would try to tell artists how to do their craft despite never drawing/painting/animating themselves.

Rarity felt compelled to do it because the Grand Galloping Gala is an extremely formal high class social event, it’s rare to get the opportunity to go, and AJ wanted to go in dirty old work clothes, and Twilight was wanting to go in a sort of sundress. (The other ponies were planning on going with no special outfits). Rarity has seen high class before, and she’s just trying to prevent her friends from getting weird looks and questions from other ponies who are all dressed formally for the Gala.

Rarity offered to do the dresses for her, also yes everyone has the right to wear what they want but rarity’s designs were liked for a reason- because they are actually good designs, when she made the changes they wanted they not only became objectively ugly designs, but they had also ruined her reputation as a designer/artist by making her showcase something that wasn’t hers (they could have just done without the fashion show). Also let’s not forget that they were supposed to be dressing for a classy formal event which is why they were all gowns, but instead the designs ended up looking like party city costumes😂

What confuses me is how everyone reacts to the "ugly" dresses. I know they look weird, but I've seen weird things like that at fashion shows in real life. They often look like silly costumes, or random objects stuck to a person's body. It always makes me ask "those are supposed to be clothes?". What the ponies wear at that fashion show is no weirder than what they wear at real fashion shows. That's why I never understood fashion. It's like in the episode where they hire Applejack as a judge, and she's the only one who realises a literal disco ball isn't clothes. If Hoity Toity thinks a disco ball is fashion, then he should like what Twilight was wearing too.

Obviously, it would be embarrassing if they actually wore those to such an event, and their actual dresses both look nicer, and actually fit the event. It's just weird that they act like those things are bad as a whole. If their criticism was more along the lines of "These things would be outrageous at the Gala", or even "What kind of pony thinks these could pass as formal dresses?", or something like that, then I'd understand. I suppose we're just missing the context of Hoity Toity (and the rest of the audience, though they might just be "sheep" following the opinion of the expert) knowing the theme/purpose of the outfits.

@@ShizuruNakatsu I definitely agree that fashion comes of like that a lot of the time, but I also appreciate that hoity toity was being critical of "trash fashion" because a lot of critics fall into the who made it or who's wearing it bias, when some designs are legitimately just trash stitched together. I also think because rarity is not a big name in their industry, she doesn't fall into any of those bias' which is why they reacted that way and legitimately judged the dresses as ugly. Like how in the real world a lot of questionable outfits are used in fashion shows and critics can either hate it because they're objective, or call it innovative because it was made by a big name or worn by a celebrity.

Oh boy, "Fall Weather Friends" is one of the craziest episodes of season 1, Ashleigh Ball had a field day voicing both RD and AJ for this one. I mean their rivalry was just insane in fact Ashleigh herself once said that RD and AJ's rivalry is one of the many things she likes about them as characters. As for "Suited For Success" fun fact, That was literally the first ever episode of mlp i ever watched it was the one that got into the mlp fandom in the first place that's why it's one of my favorite season 1 episodes! And of course "Art Of The Dress" is still considered to be one of the best and most memorable season 1 songs to this day!!!

I remember when I was first watching MLP, I _hated_ Rarity (mostly because at the time I was really against anything remotely “girly” lol). Over the course of the show, I liked her more and more. Years later, I now find her the most relatable of the cast as an artist myself. In fact, I admire her dedication to her craft and ability to hold her ground. When she has an artistic vision, she executes that vision and no amount of “neigh-sayers” will go against that It’s funny how each of the cast in that episode are very accurate to how people who actually commission artists can be, to the point it sets off my fight or flight instincts 😅 But, like someone else commented, Rarity made those outfits out of, shocker, pure generosity. She wasn’t being paid at all. They were gifts and her friends were nitpicking them. I can understand her dilemma

My only problem in retrospect with the dressmaking episode is that the ponies were hit with a ray gun that dumbed them down until the actual fashion show when Twilight is the first to realize they’d made a huge error. Anyone with any taste at all would’ve immediately thought Rarity’s first designs for their gala dresses were perfect and gorgeous, their reactions to the dresses in that first reveal moment do not make logical sense. If I had been the writer on that episode, their first reactions wouldn’t have been so cold; they’d start with small critiques, and then it would snowball from there as Rarity’s perfectionism took hold and everyone kept coming up with new ideas for their gala dresses. Finally after the montage we’d see the abominable new dresses, and then we could have that moment of realization on the runway as soon as they started getting mixed reactions from the crowd and Hoity Toity’s harsh criticisms would drive the message home that they all made a mistake pushing Rarity too far. When you’re overworked and overwhelmed you can’t make your best work.

With regard to the seasons being all weird, the episodes are not told in chronological order. The first three seasons take place over the course of a single year, but from one episode to the next there isn't much chronological progression. Running of the Leaves takes place before Winter Wrap Up, despite it being later in the episode order.

Hoity Toity came to see Rarity's work - but the dresses her friends asked for were not technically her work bc they werent her vision. Those dresses were simply commissions. The ones she made for them were made with a personal perspective of inspiration she collected of her friends to add love and a professional understanding for her specific expertise. Fluttershy may know a lot about sewing, but she doesnt exactly work with fashion to the extent that Rarity does.

Oh, and as for order of episodes, there is production order, Hub airing order, Netflix airing order, and whenever the writing staff feel like they can tackle the situation order. XD Now, if you want to take things in order of in-universe seasons (spring, summer, fall, winter) then you go by when apples are usually ready for harvesting, and then see how many times in one season we see AJ harvest apples. ... which adds up to 90 years throughout all 9 seasons...?

Don't think too hard about the timeline continuity in the first few seasons. Because certain major story beats in the first few seasons mean the first four seasons or so have to take place within the span of a year. Which means the chronology of the episodes is all over the place. Rainbow being able to use her wings in a race against Applejack would be a no-contest win for her, which is why they were tied up, but the fact that Rainbow can keep pace with Applejack on the ground despite not having the natural stamina of an earth pony is still absolutely impressive.

I've been trying to figure out the timeline of the show, and how much time actually passes... It's very hard. I really don't think the first 4 seasons are just 1 year, even though Celestia suggests it is. It just doesn't add up with the seasons and holidays and the actual passage of time. In later seasons, we see even more years pass. For example, the school opens in the Season 8 premiere. In season 8 episode 9, Fluttershy wins teacher of the *month* for the 9th time. So 9 months pass in those 9 episodes. In the episode where Rarity's mane gets messed up (season 7 episode 20), we have a timeskip of months within that one episode. Before season 9, Fluttershy wins teacher of the month for the 17th time in a row. So season 8 takes place over the course of a year and a half or so. Season 7 must also be a year or more, since ONE episode in it has months pass by. And that's not even counting things like how many times the seasons change, and the Hearthswarming episodes, etc. Even just going by canonical mentions of time passing, Flurry Heart is at least 3 or 4 years old by the end of the show, and the CMCs would be teenagers. The Cake twins would probably be 6 or 7.

If you actually pay attention to the time passing in each episode, just seasons 7 and 8 alone take 2 - 3 years. So I'm even being conservative with the numbers I gave. When we factor in season 6, and 9, that would make Flurry even older. Probably at least 4, if not 5. Since the Cake twins were around since season 2, they were also aging during seasons 2, 3, 4, and 5, so they would be even older. The Cutie Mark Crusaders were in the show the entire time, from season 1. So if they were about 8 when the show started, they would likely be about 15 by the end, not counting the time skip.

I think Episode 14 is my favourite Rarity episode because I've kinda had to put up with the same stuff when I did favours for a choosy beggar or even someone I was just being nice to. This episode changed my perspective of Rarity entirely tbh she's a hardworking business owner and I just can't help but respect that. My headcannon as to why they have to manually change the seasons is that the planet is in a perfect circular orbit around the sun, with no tilt like Earth, and when Celestia 'raises' the sun she's simply turning the planet, which also implies that she has to CONSTANTLY be turning the planet to keep it from burning and freezing, while Luna has to do the same thing with the moon to keep the tides in check. Imagine having to do both of those things on your own for a thousand years

So, "keeping it in our budget" is talking about making sure that Rarity doesn't have to pay too much. Yeah, this is another reason why season 1 feels kinda off for me. Not sure if its out of order or if there's long time skips. Long time skips wouldn't really make much sense imo, so I go with things being a little out of order.

It happens in most shows that follow an episodic formula. Take Totally Spies and Miraculous as examples. In totally spies season 3 there is a Christmas episode earlier in the season and a Halloween episode later in the season. And in miraculous the timeline is over a school year but a Christmas episode happens after Valentine’s Day

It's explicitly anachronistic order. The show staff felt that Winter Wrap Up did a much better idea of cementing that Ponies have the seasons on manual control, so put it before Fall Weather Friends so the audience would have that in mind for the latter ep.

This show came along more or less just as shows, especially kids shows, were just starting to get more heavily serialized rather then be entirely episodic where any ep could be played at any time, in any order during syndicated reruns. In fact the show didn't start getting more serious about having a clear time progression episode to episode till season 4, when they passed the dread 65 episode cut off for cartoon syndication and were still going, so knew they had something serious to work with.

That makes no sense though. Remember earth ponies like applejack all have normal strength its not due to their race having an advantage much because Applejack is a work horse. Even Rainbow calls her a workhorse. Applejacks job is to work at a farm and buck apples which is why she has strong legs. If you see them hoovewrestle in this episode Rainbow beats applejack at it meaning her hooves are stronger. Applejack has strong back legs because she bucks apples. If you look at other ponies in the show of all races they have the same strength in the hooves and backlegs except of course of work horses and stallions. So the strength legit isn't cheating. Its like saying a buff guy/girl should use their strength. You also gotta remember RAINBOWDASH is the one who challenged her to an iron pony contest to prove she is the strongest. Once rainbow saw she was going to lose that is when she began actually cheating when she stopped using her body's strength and using her wings which give lighter weight, she can glide, fly, cover basically other areas where she can use little to not physical strength. You can't challenge someone stronger than you then say they are cheating because they work out...dude your the one who said you could beat me because your ego is too big. Rainbow even said "I lost...I hate losing..." So she only made that challenge because of her pride, ego, and wanting to prove she is stronger than a workhorse because she doesn't know how to take a loss. She challenged her and was losing. There is literally no cheating on applejacks side, just rainbows.
