I am a huge fan of the Rainbow Warrior and Zebra Midge combo for both fall and winter. The rig just seems to do everything right.

I have a whole skein of Jamieson's in Oyster color. Which I love, and use for all sorts of things, thanks to your Crane Fly Larva video. I learned that my coffee grinder turns it into excellent dubbing as well. So, when my local fly shop didn't have Sow-Scud dubbing in tan rainbow, I decided to make my own using their regular rainbow and a killer bug dubbing I made with the Jamieson's yarn. Works great! Thanks again!

Combined this with a San Juan worm this August, 20-30 fish days were the norm. Killer combination. Sz 22-24 disco warrior and 14-16 worm for Maryland browns and bows.

I like a copper bead with pink flash body and a squirrel and uv shrimp pink ice dub mix collar. Absolutely crushes brook trout.

I find that using rainbow colored bead heads really makes this pattern more attractive on sunny days

I watched a guy tie this recently at our local fly tying expo here in Salt Lake City. He added some partridge legs in front of the wing case. It really looks slick with that extra step. Another nice variation is to use a Rainbow Bead. Thanks for your great videos. Not sure of your name but I have watched and copied many, many of your videos. The quality of your videos and your detailed explanations are the best I have seen. Thanks again.

Glad you like the videos, they're fun to make. I've floated the Roaring Fork twice now and both times were absolutely great. Unfortunately, both times I was holding a video camera rather than a fly rod, but no complaints.

Yes, and it worked great. But, I switched over to using the Little Black Stonefly nymph about three weeks ago and can't find a reason to fish with much else, it has been working that well.

This fly is doing wonderfully know in the fall in our VA spring creeks. It's a great combo with a PMX above and dropped below. Or used in a double nymph rig with rainbow warrior above and zebra midge below.

The are called EZ hackle pliers and yes they are spring loaded. Most fly shops and online stores carry them. Radio Shack does too, in their small electronics section (they are also good for picking up and holding resistors, capacitors and the like.) I use them all the time both while tying and fishing, an indispensable tool.

I do fish all the flies you see in the videos but some definitely more than others. I've never fished in GA but would imagine most patterns will work. Best to check with a local shop or guide.

They've always held up fine for me but you do have to use the right hook for the species. Steelhead are nasty beasts so up the wire size a bit, 2x or 3x strong maybe.

What about some kind of stonefly nymph, 20 incher, Pat's Ruberlegs, or a Girdle Bug? Also a Barr's Tungteaser and Charlie Cravens Two Bit Hooker. Just some thoughts, they see like patterns you would tie. Hope these suggestions help!

When you show your flybox at the end of the video, i think you are putting your flies in backwards. I always thought you were supposed to back the bend into the slit so that the hook point wont destroy the foam. Awesome videos!
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 9 жыл бұрын
Josh Mocny You might be right Josh but I find when I back the flies in, particularly on a curved shank hook, the backing in process really messes up the tail fibers as they get smushed against the foam.

Do you go to a fly shop or do you get stuff online
@TCSwizz2
@TCSwizz2 7 жыл бұрын
Ian Wright A little of both I would imagine. Run-of-the-mill type items such as thread, hooks, beads and even tools might be purchased online. But a lot of tiers are very particular about their materials. So, anything he uses with a natural fiber such as hackle, feathers, hair, tails etc. are most likely purchased at his local fly shop. After a potentially painstaking examination of each package to ensure the highest quality material is purchased. Although, it is more than likely that his local fly shop knows him well enough that they know his preferences and will set aside the nicest choices of materials if he needed them to. Especially, where Cree hackle is concerned. I'm sure he's on their list of people who get first dibs on Cree hackle when it is available as well.

Great video as always, I'm interested in your head cement application, you mention that you mostly use Sally Hansen, could you please share as I find I get it everywhere and yet yours seems very precise, is it home made ?
@tightlinevideo

+Bob Dep I think I know what you are talking about. I just use plain old Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails, but I put it in a dispenser bottle made by Wapsi that has a long thin metal tube for application. Hope this helps.
