It took some time for me to understand this idiom when I was in the middle school. It was raining heavily outside and I took my umbrella on the way to go to school. Thanks this lesson.

I was told not to use that expression because it's outdated and most don't use it anymore. Is that true?

Yes, dont learn every single expression, just the ones you came across in authentic material
@rachelsenglish

Hi @PTLbH! It's considered old-fashioned but is still used today. It remains a popular and widely understood way to describe very heavy rain. Others might say "pouring rain" or "raining heavily" instead.

But do you use this idiom in casual speech? I've read smw that it's already an obsolete expression 🤔
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish 3 ай бұрын
Hi @Angelica-fd! Different people use different vocabulary in conversation, but even for less common words, it's good to know them to build your expressive power! More vocabulary means you'll be able to have more options to express yourself, and understand English speakers and media in a deeper way.
