Raining inside the Pantheon

Stand underneath the Pantheon's oculus with Darius Arya and experience what it is like when it rains inside Rome's most gorgeous temple! The oculus of the Pantheon spans nearly 9 meters and is entirely open. When it rains (and rarely, snows) the precipitation falls through the hole onto the ancient pavement, getting it wet. Much of the water evaporates at it falls earthward, but it's quite the scene no matter where you stand inside the Pantheon. I take you right underneath, to get wet and admire the experience. Enjoy!

Can never get enough of this structure and this is a new perspective with some information I previously didn't know. Great videography! During Antiquity, I've read that statues of Augustus & Agrippa were in those niches that flank the doors.

One of my professors said the best time to be in the Pantheon is during a thunderstorm, the sound of thunder alone would be a memory I would never forget - of course when he traveled to Rome for study he would be there a whole semester or longer and had the opportunity of such a happy circumstance - this video does come close, thank you!

Yes, seeing rainfall inside the Pantheon is something I would dearly like to see as and when I am able to travel to Rome again. Also, I would love to see it when it snows and when the sunlight from the oculus hits the main door, which I believe happens around now. The Pantheon is, to me, by far the most wonderful and irreplaceable building anywhere. One of the very few ancient buildings that is still largely intact - it's incredible to be able to walk into a building that would still be entirely recognisable to Emperor Hadrian. It is also one of the very few ancient buildings still to retain its original roof. I read with surprise recently that it is now thought that the main doors may be the originals. If so, they must be some of the oldest in situ doors anywhere and perhaps the only original bronze Roman doors still in situ? I believe that the original doors from the Roman Senate building were moved to one of the major churches in Rome. If the doors to the Pantheon are the originals, it raises the curious question of why they don't fill the entire door opening? We do know that the Pantheon was not entirely completed as per the original design - the columns at the front are not at their intended height for example. Perhaps for some reason casting doors to the full height of the opening was not possible in time?

Thanks a lot, Charles. You can find the Pencost flowers and sunlight striking the threshold videos on this very channel! Snow, I've seen as well- but it looks like rain! The doors here are ancient but considered a later addition; The much larger, original doors were lost long ago, without documentation. The Curia bronze doors are located today at S. John Lateran. I'm posting weekly now, so stay tuned for more, from Rome, to Italy, to sites throughout the Mediterranean.

Regarding the external pediment- the "bullet holes" are from the ripped out metal pins that would have held in place the pedimental decoration, usually reconstructed as a large eagle holding a crown.

It was build 2000 gear ago by rhe roman for the gods. Phanteon means all god. A lot of nodern and neoclassical building if you see take inspiration by this. Now is a church because the pope in the 6th century wanted this. Now is still a church, bit even a architectur work of art. All is autentical. Maybe only the painting are not. Is it opem because for the light and the magical expiries that this can give you. On the floars it have holes in rhe center part and is inclined for the rain. The sun in cetain preiod as the birth of rome illuminatr the center. Is open for magnificent that this light give to the building.l and pray the gods.

It’s a giant ‘wet room’ with the marble floors laid to falls, with floor gulleys discharging to underfloor drainage. Laying decorative flooring like that, to falls, in a circle, is VERY highly skilled work, especially with no power tools or laser theodolites. And to think they had dozens of temples and palaces with this level of workmanship and exotic materials, never surpassed since, and they all got destroyed.
