FYI you can remove the crank shaft seal without all the oil pump / pan removal labor. Just need to drive a sheet rock screw into the seal and yank the seal out, then just hammer the new seal in.

Ray, we can tell this is your first VG30 series timing belt change. You really made a LOT more work for yourself then needed. The oil pump does not have to come off for a seal replacement, its a pop out, pop in affair. Now that being said, with 280K+ miles, this thing likely could use a new pump as well as a pan reseal so I think you might have saved a call back for yourself. Lower mileage VGs don't require near as much disassembly as this one does. Normally a timing belt/water pump takes about 4 hours total on a VG, providing that a stuck nut doesn't end your fun times.

i agree. i just had my vg33 and brothers vg30 apart and put his back together yesterday. only hose he removed was the lower rad hose from the motor, everything else stayed in place lol

I got it down to 2 hours, but that was after about a dozen of them for practice. When you're at the dealer and only work on one brand, you get pretty quick. Plus, I personally own an '87 Hardbody with the VG30i that I've had since new. It's got 460k on the original, never been cracked open, engine.

Always love it when things are not what they seemed and the job takes a ton more labor than thought! I learned over the years to research the repairs I am taking on to make sure there is no surprises like this. Too many of these surprises and you lose the desire to even wrench on something. Trying not to destroy the T-case in the process was tricky. Something anyone down south could remove in 5 minutes.haha

No offence to Ray he's a good mechanic and I enjoy his videos. From my days in the shop I just used a stiff cotter pin tool and pried out the old seal and replaced it. If it was really stuck I drilled a small hole in the metal part of the seal put a screw in it. Gave you something else to pry on. Of course taking care not scratch the crank but their pretty damn hard. I would not have done all that work for a seal.

I hate to be the one to mention this but………:: You can remove the main seal without removing the pan. And you can get the upper timing covers off without removing the air con hose. I have one of those Pathfinders and I’ve been there and done that. Fortunately the first thing I did when I bought the truck was buy the service manual. Or you can go online. I feel for you Ray. Those engines are crazy hard to work on⚠️

This video shows that even the, best of the best, automotive technicians, can run into something new that ties them up. Everything I've ever watched Ray do, has been so "no sweat" surgical and quick. It is nice to know he is actually human, like the rest of us ,and it is not so "no sweat." I'm not sure why a lot of folks are blaming engineers. The timing belt change on this engine is actually pretty easy, especially compared to some other cars. The only reason it got complicated was because Ray made an assumption and began removing the oil pump. He failed to look at service data and made a mistake. It happens. That's not a design problem. That oil pump could have stayed in place and the front seal can be popped out and replaced fairly easily. I am curious, is the customer going to have to pay the extra labor and the cost of a new oil pump? The old pump is probably fine and normally will outlast the rest of the engine, no need to buy a new one. I'd be upset if this were my car and I had to pay extra because the mechanic made a mistake.....

When pulling that bottom sprocket it's always best to use two pry bars one on each side so it gets pulled off evenly and it's a lot easier to do it that way.

I always removed stubborn woodruff keys by striking them on one end towards the center of the shaft. This forces the other end up and loosens the key and provides more key to get a grip on with pliers.

For future reference Ray, prying on one side of that crank gear only serves to make it bind up. You need equal pressure on both sides of that gear to get it off easier. ;)

This reminds me of a time long ago, when I was working in the parts warehouse at a local dealership. A new car came out (in conjunction with Renault). The Opel Vivaro (same as Renault Trafic). When they needed to replace a bulb in the headlights, they needed to take out the engine head to reach the headlights. Very "userfriendly" 🙈

I'm glad that you're a "persistent little Cuss", as demonstrated with that crankshaft pulley, crankshaft gear, and oil pan. I never did a timing belt on my daughter's 1998 Pathfinder (now gone) but have done on my 1988 Mazda B2200 truck, theory is the same, but I didn't need a crankshaft oil seal. I've done water pumps on my 1998 and 2004 4-cylinder Frontiers, and those engines (timing chains) do seem to be more sturdy than the VG33 V6 engines.

Woodfuff key needs to be snug. Use flat punch and hammer to rotate key in slot, then good parallel pliers to pull/pry key out. BTW a crankshaft key is always aligned with zero/neutral rotation position .

OR, it's a round key, normally striking straight down on one end or the other will roll the key out like a wheel.

Just replaced the pan on my daughters 02 xterra 4x4 and taking the center section between the wheels helped with space. 6 bolts and 4 tack weld removals and you have all kinds of room. I enjoy your vids!

Hate to say it, but I knew the minute you took a hammer to that poor pocket screwdriver how that was going to end up... got several that look like that for that reason! hahaha Next time might I suggest a screwdriver into the crankshaft seal and pry instead... Save ya a LOT of aggravation for sure... Not sure you can get your seal puller into the area, but, since you've already compromised the water integrity, yanking the radiator out is a WHOLE LOT faster and gives ya more room to access those crank seals and the rest of the front of the engine.... You're a great mechanic Ray, but like all of us, sometimes you can't see the forest because of the trees.... Hope ya have a great Monday bud.... and this thing hasn't caused ya too much grief by now

Just wondered why you rotated the engine backwards to align the timing marks, I know you were only disassembling but I would still want to go the direction of rotation even if I went backwards too far and then forwards to the marks. Maybe it doesn't matter and I'm over cautious when aligning marks at the dismantle stage. I was expecting that issue with getting the oil pan off, purely because I know it can't be done on my own car without the subframe and other bits coming off first.

I would have thought that the oil seal was ok, that oil would have been the normal blow pass at that high milage. a quick break clean around the case and it would have seen the life of the car out. Hind sight is a wonderful thing. 😃

Good night nurse, I kept hollering nooo, but you couldn't hear me. I helped a neighbor do one, almost the same thing. The water pump was a little different, but that front seal was right there, you didn't have to pull that oil pump or oil pan off. That seal pops out fairly easy too. Well the silver lining is, that engine having all those miles gets a new oil pump, good cleaning of any sludge, new gaskets that will not leak, things like that, that would have happened soon anyway. You may have given it new life that it wouldn't have gotten otherwise. I like those old pathfinders, you did it some justice. Two thumbs up on doing a great job that will be worth it in the end. Losing a bit on the time but you will make a little back on the video. kudos

Ray, next time when you will be replacing a crank shaft seal or any other round-shaped seal just drill a small hole with the drill bit in the side of the sea you are removing and then screw in a small diameter sheet metal screw with hex drive. Then take a pliers and pull out a seal. Worked 100% for me. Cheers!

Ray, this is the strangest video I have ever seen you produce. Even if the seal did fit in a front cover rather than the oil pump, why remove the front cover at all when the seal can be easily extracted without removing it? Simple mistake (or should RTFM apply here) now requires extra work, extra gaskets and why a new oil pump - seriously! If that wasn’t bad enough the arcing due to removing the starter motor without disconnecting the battery and the obvious pick up tube oversight were astonishing. As ‘bad days at the office go’ this ‘takes the biscuit’.

It also looked like he needed to rotate the engine another 180 degrees to line up all timing marks to verify it was put on correctly previously and whoever replaced that timing belt before didn't line the marks on the belt up with the marks on the cam sprockets.

Read the manual when installing /uninstalling foreign objects, including battery. You can always keep your settings with temporary voltage source.

Oh, Ray, I watched your frustration on the crankshaft gear removal and you have the patience of a saint! Next time you confront a similar problem I suggest a little heat applied to the gear---not a lot. Not only will heat cause s small expansion of the gear, it will also help draw the cleaner into the crankshaft/gear surface. Keep up the good work (If you lived near me I would send you all my friends and relatives!) --A dedicated follower--

Sometimes using side cuts works well for pulling woodruff keys. Also making sure you use all the brake clean available. It's always a adventure

whew--that was really painful to watch----a puller for the crank sprocket and a small punch hitting the back part of the woodruff key to quickly raise the front part . Please get yourself some brass hammers and punches

That is a lot of work to replace a timing belt. Makes me thankful that my wife's Honda Pilot ended up being as easy as it was. I've had to do it twice and it took less time combined than I think that Nissan was.

2 main things dictate where bolts go: 1st is experience 2nd is an organised work space. You know where you put things and instinctually keep fasteners either close to parts or in specific places, for example when i work on top of the engine i usually line bolts up on the fenders or underneath the windshield.

Ray good morning from Dallas Texas I have to say one thing thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you for showing me what you’re going through so that way I can deny any customer coming by and asking me to replace the water pump or oil pump for this type of vehicle. I was worried your marks were not aligned on crankshaft pulley upside down or cover put on to see if mark on cover and outer pulley. Those keys i would not be tapping at the front but at the top rear to push it down and raise it at front. I had an old mirror to use to view things i could not feel or see. You could have added Wife Unit saying Hello

If this car comes in again for spark plugs, pass the job on. I have just spent hours trying to remove and install number 6 plug and I have been wrenching for 40 years. Nissan with all their knowledge and wisdom decided to place the plug right at the back of the engine directly behind the inlet manifold.Yes I did attempt to remove the inlet manifold but same issue as you with the gearing, siezed on but with allan bolts to add to the joy. So I did the old reach around between the firewall and manifold and used a boroscope to see. Hardest job I have ever done on an engine. My hands have been torn to shreds. The seal replacement looks a breeze to do in comparison, but that is my next job to do. Oh the joy.
