As someone who grew up with no money, having money now relieves a LOT of stress. That DOES contribute to happiness. I never traveled or went on vacations before. That does a lot. I am also able to do things I enjoy because of money. It does a lot of you never had it. True, it doesn’t solve your problems. But it helps immensely and we can’t pretend it doesn’t

I’ve read Rainn’s other books from the library. Since I’m 78 I have greatly cut down on buying more books but Soul Boom I bought because I wanted to read more than once. The thoughts aren’t new to me but you’ve put everything so well and the humor is the best. Thank you.

Why would you cut down on buying books?
@davidfleming788711 ай бұрын
@@Chadhogan111 while I have donated over a thousand books I still have over 500 hard copy of books I still want to read and over a thousand audiobooks and kindle books I will never read all of them before I die. (One of my biggest regrets but not enough to live to be 500). I also love browsing through the library in person and on line. I’m just too greedy for my own good.
@JLeeeP11 ай бұрын
@@Chadhogan111Because as you get older you want fewer things. Makes it easier on those who have to deal with your shit when you’ve died. Also, you seem to be conflating buying with reading. As a Buddhist and mindfulness practitioner - I'd just like to add that I don't see my wants or attachments as things to "release" ~ but it's moreso about tending to them with great intention, kindness, and care. Like, let me validate that very, very human part of myself with a lot of loving kindness. Then it makes it easier to loosen the grip of whatever the want/attachment/expectation is. Love your podcast, Neil. This is really juicy stuff.

Rainn Wilson is one of very few Hollywood people I'd like to go hiking and fishing with. I feel like he has a realness, a groundedness that I really appreciate, and I believe we would connect. At least that is how he makes me feel whenever I see him talk as himself and not a character. What a lovely man :)

Relating too well to Rainn's early grappling with anxiety. Always been a thing that was there but started getting severe panic attacks a couple years ago, and therapy is making me realize there's a lot of stuff from my past that I've dismissed/buried that are at the root of it. Caused my medicating of it with alcohol. But realizing it's something I'm able to work on, as simple as that is, really is hopeful and makes for lot better days ahead. Love conversations like this!

I like how they talk about, how can you help people to wake up and discover good things. Maybe that's not your job? Maybe you're helping to sustain people who are already struggling to stay good, stay positive, stay on the path. Then you hear people that you like and you feel a connection to saying, I am struggling to stay on the path, and it's hard. Just hearing that sometimes makes the journey less difficult; they take some of the weight of being alone and let you know they are right there with you. Someone who isn't on the path doesn't even care about the struggle, can't hear any of this, they are to deep within themselves, and this is more advanced thoughts.

I really appreciated this episode because of Rainn's diabetes metaphor. I remember reading about transcendental meditation and feeling like i'd never feel so certain and centered as what it feels/sounds like. The more I listen to Blocks it feels like whatever your practice (drugs, therapy, meditation, unattachment) it feels like these are tools in a box that are just helpful in charting the water (yourself) but storm to storm their use may vary and that you may still come up short. Thanks Neal and guests for setting realistic expectations around mental health.
