I probably watched Douglas fight 6 or 7 times back in those days and could never understand how he performed that night against Tyson. Watch the full replay of the Tyson fight. The speed, the combination punching, the endurance and grit he showed, i always thought he was on something Lol looked totally juiced and looked great. Then this fight vs a prime and hungry Evander holyfield it looked like Douglas didnt train much since the title victory. it was crazy to watch both events unfold.

He showed up in the best shape of his life because he figured this was his big chance. Tyson showed up in the worst shape of his life, and hung over from the night before. Overconfident, he never even watched any video of Douglas.

Buster Douglas, that night, in Tokyo, was the best heavyweight on the face of the earth that night. His mom passed just 12 days before the fight, and he promised her he'd be the man to beat Iron Mike. He fought nearly a perfect fight, especially against the style that Tyson used. Of course he got caught at the end of the 8th, but he made the count (IMO easily, he used the rather slow count to have time to recover, he was ready to get up nearly immediately.) and survived to the 10th, where he landed one of the most brutal combinations I've ever seen in boxing history. 'Tokyo' Buster Douglas would've given nearly any heavyweight champion in history a hard fight, win or lose. A damn shame we never saw anything quite like that in his career before or after.
@samlott99
@samlott99 Жыл бұрын
That's easy. Tyson had been "owned" by Don King for sometime when he fought Douglas. That night was probably Tyson's worst performance, while it was Douglas' best. Plus Douglas was motivated by his mother's recent death. Tyson didn't need any money. He had become arrogant under Don King. No discipline as taught by Cus D'Amato. Worst of all, when Don King took control of Tyson's life, Tyson lost Kevin Rooney as a trainer. So, nah. Tyson wasn't performing at any kind of normal level that night.
@adamshort2534

Douglas never really trained hard, that was his achilles heel. The only reason he was able to get up in the 8th round of his fight against Tyson was because he came into that fight in really good shape. In general he would dominate for a few rounds and then tire. Against good fighters, he always got knocked over.

Buster Douglas' victory over Tyson was an accident, with an unrecognizable Mike in the ring. Against Hollyfield there was no mistake, the best won and Douglas lived his 15 minutes of fame.

Douglas made the same mistake against Holyfield as Tyson made against him; he showed up in lousy shape. Douglas's victory over Tyson was no accident. Douglas was in the best shape of his life, and Tyson spent 2 weeks partying before the fight, including staying up all night doing shots and lines the night before the fight.

Douglas was no bum, lucky? No if you fought Mike Tyson and won that would be lucky 😂 Douglas beat champions and was boxing ever since he could walk, Douglas was pushed into boxing by his father, Douglas did not even care about boxing. Douglas was showing up for paychecks and did not care if he lost. Douglas lost his mother just before this fight and Douglas wanted the victory and he got it! Yeah Mike was lazy around those times and going through BS with Givens but Douglas didn't just beat Tyson with one wild punch, Douglas beat Tyson about every round leading up to a knockout. Sorry but that is not luck when you win 8 out of 10 rounds and knock out your opponent, if it was a luck, Douglas landed a 1,000 lucky punches, nobody was going to beat Douglas that night

Douglas fought the fight of his life, against a Mike Tyson who didn’t take him seriously. It was kind of performance that a fighter can only give once. It was the absolute peak of his career. By contrast, Holyfield was on his way up, and had trained with the mentality of “This is my time.” If anything, he may have seen it as a mere tuneup for Tyson. The casual fan might have believed the hype of this being a fight with “No clear favorite; but real fight fans knew that Douglas had no chance.

Never heard the commentators praising Mills Lane in that one part around 7:40 . He truly was one of if not the best ref to ever do it. He was never scared of the heavyweights he was in there with, and was tough but fair. Him standing up to Tyson after the ear bite was so brave and showed what a great ref needs to do. Tyson says "I didnt bite him, that was from a punch" Mills simply says "Bullshit! 2 points!" Fly high Mills Lane, we lost the best when we lost you at the end of 22. Such a long career of diligent refereeing!

The beginning of PED Holyfield. When he was on them in the 90s he had power, stamina and a chin. When he wasn't (during Bowe II) he was mediocre. After that fight he let it slip that he lost because he was "smaller". Douglas hadn't trained for this fight at all. He took the money and ran.

This was the fight that proved that Douglas was a busta and the Tyson fight was thrown by Mike! No fighter who does not want to lose, gets knocked down then goes for his mouthpiece before trying to beat the count. You beat the count, then they give a tin bit more time by getting the mouthpiece washed off and put back in your mouth. They told him to throw the fight since people were tired of quick Tyson KO's and Douglas was a nobody who would not hold the belt for long.

Holyfiled's neck is at least as thick as Mike Tyson's, which is quite noticeable at the beginning of the video.
