Raintree County - Windsor Ruins Scene - Part 1 of 2

These ruins are well worth visiting. It's a haunting place, even on a sunny Sunday morning. We took some pictures and visited the graveyard. The history of Windsor Ruins can be found at Wikipedia.

I always thought that Sussana (Liz Taylor) set the house on fire herself and was haunted by it. That's what made her crazy.

In the book "The Lost Mansions of Mississippi" there's a drawing of Windsor mansion from before the fire. I don't know that any photos exist of the house before it burned. I used to live across the street and about three doors down from the house where "Raintree County" author Ross Lockridge lived and where he committed suicide in the garage.

Andrew, no known photos of Windsor have ever been discovered. I believe the sketch you speak of is one done by a Union soldier during the Civil War.

My husband and I just visited the ruins this past Saturday, November 26th, 2022. It was raining, but we did get some videos and photos. There is a fence around the columns to prevent people from getting close, as the columns are in disarray/decay.

I've been there - about 20 years back. The steps are gone, and there's a railing around the place - it's not that stable any more.

I believe those were original, the steps are now at nearby Alcorn State University.

The stairs were a wooden reproduction built by the movie studio and made to look like iron. The original stairs were moved to the chapel at Alcorn College in the 1890's. (now Alcorn State University)
