Miss Taylor was a phenomenal southern belle! Loved to have seen her in her youth at her sprawling plantation.

Elizabeth Taylor gave a great performance here, as did the actor's actor, Monty Clift. Monty never won an Oscar because he didn't play the game. Liz did, and she won two Oscars. In any case, both were exceptional actors and exquisitely beautiful.

Elizabeth Taylor never played the game, she was a rebel. She told louie B. Mayer to go to hell at just 14. But she worked hard and made money. She won 2 oscars, one as an almost died, lets award her before its too late and the second because she gave one of the best performances by an actress on film. She was a good friend too, to Monty and many others.

Even Taylor admitted she only got her 1st Oscar because she almost died from Pneumonia.

I do believe this scene was after Monty's accident. He looks different here than he did at the beginning of the movie.

It definitely was. He's clearly drugged out of his mind...can barely focus on Taylor about halfway through the scene, let alone say his lines. Poor man...

@@dsdontsurf actually, it was also due to the accident being so severe that he just kept spiraling from the pain and depression. So utterly tragic :(

This scene was filmed after Montgomery Clift's May 1956 car accident that left his face disfigured. Monty Clift's whole left side of his face is nearly paralyzed despite the camera man's skill at trying to film as much of the right side of his face as he can.

Elizabeth Taylor, when given the RIGHT director like George Stevens, Joseph Mankewicz, Daniel Mann, Mike Nichols, and Franco Zifferelli, could be counted on for a great performance. Although everyone knows about her Oscar victories in "Butterfield 8", and "Virginia Woolf", they tend to forget her strong work in "A Place in the Sun". "Giant". "Raintree County", "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", "Suddenly, Last Summer", "Butterfield 8" (she earned Oscar nominations for the last four consecutively). With "Butterfield 8", (for which she got great reviews), the Academy finally felt it was her time for finally win her Oscar. They had no idea that just six years later, she'd give a bulldozing performance in "Virginia Woolf" and win yet a second Oscar. She had acting chops, but it always took a great director to get them out of her.

I absolutely love this movie and I think it has the best performance that Elizabeth Taylor ever gave; far better than her performances in 'Butterfield 8' or 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.'

Dusk Hollow Not a "silly comment" at all. This performance is believable and beautifully understated, whereas her performances in the two films she won an Oscar for are WAY over the top!

She chewed up the scenery in Virginia Woolf and was great in Cat On a Hot Tin Roof. Raintree was visually stunning but required little acting.

the fact is that Elizabeth Taylor is vastly different in those movies - giant - suddenly last summer - cat on a hot tin roof and raintree - she was a great actress besides being the most beautiful woman God ever created.

@irwinrussell5606

As do I! This scene is split into two parts for multiple reasons: 1. Being that this is copyrighted material, it makes for a less appealing source of video, thereby encouraging consumers purchase the movie for themselves (even though it is currently unavailable on DVD). It also makes this video less likely to be taken down. 2. The transition from ruin steps towards the cemetery makes for the ideal cut to the second half of this scene. I merely cut where the transition was intended by the studio/director (notice the change in music at the end of Part 1 and beginning of Part 2).

Elizabeth Taylor was a great actress. But I have to point out (coming from a native Southern viewpoint) her Southern accent is awful. Same as it was in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". Sorry. The only Englishwoman who got the southern accent down rather well was Vivien Leigh in GWTW and I think it may be because she didn't try so hard. After all, all Southern accents, except New Orleans and certain Low Country ones in SC and GA, are tied directly to Great Britain. Maybe Liz was over-coached. She should have just fallen back on her British-ness.

There are a number of Southern accents, and the movies seldom offered anything close to the way people spoke (or speak today). In more modern films, it seems there has been more of an effort to get it right. Elizabeth Taylor's accent sounds like the typical Hollywood version of how they thought people in the South all speak. But, no one cared. She was gorgeous, and a reasonably good actress at times. You couldn't take your eyes off that face.

I was told this in England in 1983, by an Englishman; that the American southern accent has its roots in the English accent.

I came here just to see if anyone else had that reaction. The movie is on TCM right now but I am struggling to get through it because Taylor’s accent is so unbearably bad. She is playing a caricature of a southern belle which confirms for me how little people in Hollywood and other places have ever known about the South. Sadly, I have lost my accent over time but i will slip back into it when I visit family and friends.

Elizabeth was born in England, true but she grew up here. Her accent was American. Not sure if her Britishness would help her in this instance. The accent is very exaggerated I agree for sure.

I never really understood the theme of this movie. Taylor just gets weirder in the movie. And sad about Montgomery Clift's face: his profile is not as perfect as before the accident and his whole jawline looks heavy - IMHO anyway.
