Joe, my wife and I are getting ready to move to a new place where I will do some rain harvesting and so you were my 'go to' YT channel for doing stuff like this. I feel like you're part of my YT University degree when I need to learn something I've never done before. Great explanations with no short-cuts or hacks to make life simpler in the beginning and then have to pay for those short cuts in the end. Your projects are always top-shelf material.

I did the exact same thing a few months ago. The problem is here in the desert the water would literally get dirty in a few days and our goats wouldn’t drink it. I changed the bucket to a nipple waterer for goats . Clean water and no maintenance. Our goats love it. 👍🏼

We've decided we'll be adding a shed to the yard and I will be making sure to add gutters so we can catch as much rain as possible. First year after getting my IBC tote for rainwater it stayed quite clean all summer but every year after that it pretty quickly grows a lot of alga despite me powerwashing it thoroughly every spring. I probably need to either paint it black or build some kind of plywood cover for it. Luckily it's just for watering the garden so not a big deal. These videos are extremely insipring. Really nice place you got there.
@homesteadonomics2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the light is the biggest thing for algae growth. So I will eventually paint it or cover it. But it is unpainted in this video as I needed to get it finished to be ready for our next rain as we are getting close to the end of our monsoon.

Thoughts on overshoot from the gutter in heavy rain? All you need is a Y filter or even just a T for 1st flush. All it does is gravity catch dirt That's a huge volume considering the area of catchment. And no need for strictly animal water. People water sure. Animals not so much. Covering the IBC with siding to keep the light out? Those cages make it super easy.

Thanks for the info. So far in testing it I have not had any problems…. The ball is pretty stiff and is almost 3” diameter… and the necked down area is 2” so it’d have to push it really hard to get it stuck.

Nice to see a quick video that shows the whole system. It will be interesting to see how much rain this next storm is supposed to dump and see if it fills the tank. @homesteadonomics2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, if we get a good 1.5-2” it’ll fill that thing up for sure. This roof is 12x21’ so it should collect approx 120-130 gallons for each inch. Of course that depends on how much of a downpour. If it’s crazy hard then some will likely skip over that inlet screen. Hopefully I’ll be home and be able to get some of it on camera!
