The rain tapped rhythmically against the window as Leila sat at her small café table, chin resting on her hand, a steaming cup of tea cooling in front of her. Across from her, a sleek black cat perched on the windowsill, its sharp green eyes locked on hers. They had been sitting in silence for a while, the world outside blurred by the rain and the glow of streetlights.
Leila didn’t know the cat’s name or where it had come from. It had appeared just as the first raindrops began to fall, slipping through the café door and choosing her table as its sanctuary. At first, she thought it might leave, but now it seemed as if it had decided to stay for the long haul.
“Do you ever wonder what it’s all for?” she asked softly, her voice breaking the quiet. The cat tilted its head slightly, as if considering her words. She chuckled at herself, feeling silly for talking to a stray.
But as the rain continued, she felt a strange comfort in the cat’s presence, as though it understood her in a way no one else could. Outside, the world moved on, but inside, time seemed to pause for Leila and her unexpected companion.
