Ten years following the 2014 ‘pulse flow’ of water released into the Colorado River Delta, we look back at the binational cooperation that made this possible, the changes evident in the landscape and biodiversity, and the impact on the communities in the region - as told by those who were a part of this historic event.
The 2014 "pulse flow" resulted from an historic 2012 agreement between Mexico and the United States, Minute 319, that provided for the strategic release of water for environmental conservation purposes. The pulse flow’s primary objective was to restore the Colorado River Delta. It was the first time that both countries committed to releasing volumes of water exclusively for ecosystem conservation.
The key moment of the "pulse flow" occurred in March 2014 when the gate
at Morelos Dam, located on the border between Baja California, Mexico,
and the United States, was opened. This marked a milestone in binational
cooperation for environmental protection.
