We started with 2, 75 gallon stock tanks and now have 6. They are up off of the ground and few inches to aid in drainage and there is zero bending over! A great back saver and so easy to keep a few stray weeds under control. I still plant tomatoes and peppers in the ground, but everything else is tank farmed! Highly recommend!

After years of fighting (and losing) the battles of root knot nematodes, neighbor's tree roots, moles and voles, along with age and a bad back, I switched to Earthboxes in 2020. I was very pleased with the results and now have nine. They sit on a dedicated area covered with weed fabric, three rows of three boxes each. There are t-posts at the end of each row, topped with PVC fittings holding a metal pipe to hold a trellis for climbing plants. No weeding, no fertilizing except for the initial addition to the potting mix at the beginning of each season, no flooding, no drought situation, just water through the fill tube once a day, easy peasey (still sometimes have to deal with some pests and disease, though). It's a small garden compared to many people, but it's sufficient for the two of us.

The prairie voles alone are reason enough for such s set-up. A local orchardist told me that most mold-type diseases come from rain and hail, so covering plants and watering them as you do can help

I live in a small town. I do not have the tiller to till an unground garden and at 60 I do not have the gumption to dig it by hand. I have 2 3X6 ft raised bed that I plant for fresh eating mainly. Although, I did get enough tomatoes this year to actually can some pizza sauce and tomato soup. I had 4 plants. I planted 2 zucchini plants in the corner and trained them to trail outside the bed and they provided me with all the zucchini I wanted and I shared some too. In the 2nd bed I planted peppers with butternut squash in 2 corners. I again trained them to vine outside the bed. Worked great and I enjoyed watching it all grow and spread.

@LivingTraditionsHomestead I agree with the comments about the opening of this video. But I also wanted to make sure you saw this comment, that spider looks like a Joro spider which is considered an invasive species here in Georgia. Less than 10 years ago I never saw one but now they are everywhere, they build giant webs that are extra tough and sticky, and we rarely see "normal" spider website outdoors anymore. I am not sure you want to encourage them! Look it up 😊

We love our four raised beds. Closing in on our eighth decade, we have extended our gardening season of life with raised beds. Gardening means quality food for the table, but also food for the mind and the soul ... and good exercise. As well, conquering zone 9B desert gardening requires social and cognitive engagement with seasoned desert gardeners, taking classes, reading, and watching gardening videos. I can't think of a better way to stay all-around healthy in our senior years. Thank you for your always informative and entertaining videos.

Next year I am planning on installing some drip lines into the raised beds. I watched your video of when you were installing your water system for the greenhouse. I won't be doing as much as you did but I hope to prevent wasting water and NOT losing most of the garden to draught like this year. I'm praying that I will be able to make my body work as needed. I don't expect a bigger garden just more efficient. I need to plant only what I know we will use the most. Thank you for being such nice people, you don't talk down to those of us that have to learn by going to the library, then internet and by trial and error. I watch all of your videos and learn so much. So far I have been able to keep us fed, enjoyed watching things grow and bring healthy food into our bodies.

You'll love the raised beds. At 65, we went to raised beds 3 years ago. I built 23, 4'x8' beds out of old corrugated aluminum barn roofing. Used 4x8 posts just sitting on the ground in the four corners and one set in the middle with a board between them to prevent the beds from bowing out. The next year I built another 18 beds. These are 4x8, 4x10 and 4x12. I got some metal sheeting a contractor friend was throwing out, cut the sheeting in half so these are 17" high vs the 32" high corrugated metal beds. Used the same process with the 4x4 posts. All going strong now for the 3 years we've been using them. I'm also experimenting with Hügelkultur (pronounced “hoogle-culture”) in 6 of my beds. We put sticks, rotten logs etc. in the bottom of the beds then filled the rest with dirt. The theory is when the sticks decompose they maintain water which the plants can use. Oh, last year I also added a drip irrigation system. So far all is going well, and my back appreciates the raised beds. We got a couple of those garden carts with the big tractor seats on them. They make a nice addition to saving your back when your weeding.

Your beginning was so wonderful. Thank you. I live in Canada in zone 4b. I have been growing successfully in metal raised beds for three years. When I put my 14 raised beds together I placed old logs and brush, chicken bedding etc. in the bottom as a hugelkultur bed. I generally do not water these beds unless we have gone several weeks with no rain. This has been the most stress free and enjoyable gardening that I have ever done! I even grow trellised butternut squash, small watermelon and luffa among other things. I would highly recommend growing in this way. Weeds really are kept to a minimum and are very managable even sitting from a chair beside the bed!

In the past 25 years, I've worked with in ground, raised beds on the ground, containers like buckets, totes and earthboxes and have learned lot. With the help of the USF & The County Ext. Office, they showed me what works best for our area. This year I'm adding the big raised beds like you have and the same size. I already know I'm going to love them. Everything but the old raised beds are staying as well and we are just rearranging them to all fit in my back yard. You have to learn what works for your area and run with it. And, what grows like crazy this year might not next year. I live in zone 9B and this is the start of our growing season. Our rest time is the summer when it's too hot. 😊

This year I planted the raised beds, got to harvest some but not all before the weeds took over, inspite of weed barriers. I just can't keep up with it anymore. I also had 3 greenstalks that I had right outside my living room door. I got more produce and enjoyment from those. So next year I'm doing only greenstalk gardening. My hubby ordered me 2 more so now I have a total of 5. Looking forward to next year's garden.

Wow! Truly an inspirational and humbling intro - That was worth putting onto paper and framing! After the initial setup ( which is pricey) , I also found it a pleasure to work in my raised beds. This was also my first year - minimal bending , virtually no weeds and for me less watering. Love working with nice fluffy soil vs my hard, rocky clay soil . I also did 2.5 x 8 ft beds and I think I’m going to extend to 4 x8 for next year . Bless the two of you - love your videos !

Great review. I’ve kind of stopped watching because I’m not interested in buying all those raised beds, it’s a huge investment if you’re not a KZbinr being supplied with products, also seems like a huge waste of space. The heat from all that black fabric and metal beds has to really dry things out, huge use of water, here in the north that black fabric in rows is good because we need the heat. I live in a pine forest and have terrible soil but over the years I have added manure and compost so it’s better, I just like my plants to get nutrients from the earth and not a chemical. The weed solution seems great but I live with it. I’m glad you are happy with it because that’s slot to set up, I’m getting old but I’m still a lover of in ground gardens ! Blessings and may the Lord bring needed rest and a renewed energy for spring ❤

I appreciate your analysis! We’ve been in Missouri for 3 years. After spending most of our lives in northern Illinois where is actual soil, the rock and clay we have here is so terrible to work with and makes it very easy to see why they grow cattle here, not crops. Our garden is split up between raised beds, large containers, straw bales, and mini beds in plastic ala Hedrick Kimball in upstate NY. Mr Kimball’s plan worked amazingly good in Illinois. Here, we had to adapt his plan a bit by adding a few inches of purchased soil to the surface. We’re learning what does best in each situation. Before next spring I intend to buy new plastic and cover the entire garden because fighting the weeds, especially wild blackberries, is incredibly time consuming.m and by mid-July we lost the battle. I have thought of putting the raised beds over plastic as you did for the same reason. Thanks for putting this video out!

Really enjoyed seeing the sun set and sun rise you filmed. It was worth any of the work it took to show us. I love flower gardening in raised beds. My husband made me 2 gardens about 26’ long by 9’ wide using old logs from buildings and made the gardens 3 logs high. The great drainage that you were talking about is the same with these and not many weeds. I love them! I can sit on the sides of them and work all around the garden tending to things. We have a huge fenced in vegetable garden and we work in it the old fashioned way but he leaves space enough between the rows to be able to pull a disc and tiller between them to keep that part of the garden weed free. We love gardening and the results we can see and eat. Enjoy your videos Sarah and Kevin. Take care.

I seriously think that most of the suffering my plants did was because of the intense sun and irregular rain (6 weeks without a drop and then 6 inches; 4 weeks with no rain and then 3 1/2" followed 2 days later by 3 3/4". Thanks for another successful year and for sharing your life on the homestead!

I loved your opening and correlation with time to rest! We all need winter to rejuvenate! I started watching during Covid and built a raised garden bed at that time. I didn’t put enough support in the center and it bows a bit. It’s perfect for the two of us and our small yard!

My hubby built me some waist-high raised beds in 2020, because I'm disabled and can't get down on the ground anymore. They're 8' long x 2' wide and 36" tall. We were able to get the lumber before the prices went sky-high. I painted the outsides of the boxes with an exterior enamel paint and then the insides, we drilled drainage holes and I melted together mineral oil and beeswax to protect the wood without using chemicals. After painting the insides with the mineral oil/beeswax mixture, we laid down weed fabric to also help preserve the wood. They have worked out perfectly for me and I love them ALOT. I've been Blessed with a great man who encourages me to continue doing what I like to do to without hurting myself. We did add a couple of the galvanized beds to our garden this season and he works those for me, when I can't do it. We've been together for over 21+years and have been truly Blessed with a great relationship and love for each other. Blessings to you 2 from a follower from the mtns of Virginia.🙏🏼🫂❤️

A friend recommended filling raised beds with small logs--with a good layer of compost on the top. The wood supposedly both takes up space, but makes it so you have to water less often. The wood also turns to compost over time.

I bought the 4x8 beds. I like the higher beds because I have back problems. I have really loved working in them and will be buying a few more next year.

Thanks for the review of your raised beds. We’ve been amending our garden for 25 years and have some lower raised beds. The soil is beautiful but some trees on the west side have grown a lot so we have less hours of sun which is becoming a problem. However, we have a deck that might work as a place to use some beds like yours. And we are 76 and almost 78 and in-ground gardening is not as easy any more!

I have some raised beds and terraces (we're on a hill). I like raised beds much more than in the ground less weeds and less kneeling. This is the first year I have welcomed fall and putting the garden to bed. We won't have a killing frost for another month or so. I am done and have been gradually pulling things as they are done. It has been more relaxing and easier to manage.

I have a green stalk i love for growing lettuce ,kale, spinach swiss chard easy to cut and water from the top. I took it apart one year and used it to make 5 separate pots for my green beans onions bok choy tomatoes and kale worked great. I have 4 raised beds 2×4x 6 i love the hight less bending. And i grew corn in one it was 1 x4x6 Christmas gift over soil no fabric under for my grandson who was 6 to plant his corn. He loved it that his corn grew and he planed it. Im 76 and still plant veggies in my garden. After all we all need to eat. Why not healthy for yourself. Not store bought God bless love your videos. Doug and stacy off grid made there garden raised beds with cedar wood. And acre homestead her are 2x4x10 and she has like 25 beds i believe she also cans and preserves for winter. Love all these videos on prepping our food. We all should grow our food.

My daughter has a setup like yours. I'm in process of scraping off all the thistles & bindweed with a backhoe for laying down the fabric. Thanks for your example & info.

I had two huge garden spiders in my tomatoes. Unfortunately I also had squash bugs. I would catch the squash bugs, lay then on the spider webs, and watch them go to town! So satisfying! 😊

I enjoyed this video. I live on a mountain ridge. My only practical choice is raised bed gardening. Unfortunately, most of my weed seeds are spread by the wind. So I still have weeding to do. In my tall raised beds, I start out with sticks and fairly green logs on the bottom. That seems to help quite a bit. I was so thrilled when I found a huge bunch of earthworms (red worms) happily living in my livestock trough raised beds.

I have raised beds here in South Dakota and I grow pumpkins and watermelon in raised beds. I plant them along the edge and let them grow over the edge onto the ground. I got amazing watermelon and cantaloupe this year doing it this way. Hope this helps. Love your videos! ❤️

I’ve been doing raise beds for about seven years. they work quite well for me. I can sit on my little stool and work in my beds. I can plant a lot of food in them. I have great success in growing food in them. Mine are made out of cedar wood. Your intro was absolutely beautiful and it is so true as the garden begins to shut down so do we. It is often needed. We work very hard all spring and summer. now the beds are put to sleep and rest, so do we rest. ❤

I really enjoy your videos. Your love of Jesus is precious. We put 30” tall bed in 4 years ago and are really glad we could. Ours are on concrete and they are so much easier on our backs. Ours are Birdies beds. Thank you for your videos.
