Is Racism just an American problem? That's what I hear often when I talk to Europeans. But is it true? Today we're talking to a Black man who was raised in Berlin Germany and he's telling about his experiences with race and the passive agressive and sometimes just outright agressive interactions he has had.

I spent 3 years in Germany, and all of the war babies appeared to be lost and confused .

I will be traveling to Berlin and Munich in September for the Marathon and Oktoberfest from America. I hope I have a wonderful experience. This conversation was eye opening.

That’s why those African countries are telling them to get out. They need to be treated the same way when they visit the continent. I’m glad someone is honest because we already knew.

Bi-racial Berlinerin hier. My experience was mainly good being born and raised in Berlin (except for the staring). But I know my brother and other black friends were not so lucky. Facing racism not only from Germans, but also from other immigrants.

8:53 the biggest one in a confrontation is the first one suspected because they appear stronger. It's optics.

About the staring part, it's difficult to compare as I'm not a person of color, but my experience is that German people tend to stare by default. I'm living in a village next to the German border on the west, and whenever I hang out on a square next to the road coming from Germany I can see people staring intensely from their car - some of them even miss the curve and have to go back because of that. Pretty funny because I'm nothing special really: wearing blue jeans and a black t-shirt mostly, and have a very average face with average weight, so I can only image how much they stare if someone is out of the norm. Like this guy who seems to be wearing flashy shirts.

ok that's interesting to hear - there can be many reasons for stares, and it's not only race.

If you are not a person of color, does that mean that you have no color and therefore, cannot be seen by anyone? People of color includes everyone since all people have a color, including the color of white.. Isn't white pants, shirts, suits, cars, sheets, Tee-Shirts, socks a white color? So why is it that white people are not the color of white, pink, pinkish/red ha ha.. I refuse to jump on a POPULARITY term and allow other people to direct how I view life.. A Black person does not have to be jet black in color, but can be any color, and a white person can also be white and pink...

@@etruscancivilization Here in Europe it is the generally accepted term to address someone who differs from the homogeneous white majority of the population. Pretty sure it differs from one part of the world to another, for example in Japan I was the white guy, but saying that a person is black in Europe is not really acceptable.

@@fabosbalazsThe term Black race is Not acceptable by who, the white Germans? My point is that I REFUSE to allow white people to CHOOSE my Identity, when I can choose my own. Only an idiot ofa passive nature would accept such a concept.. If I go to Japan, Korea, Germany, Russia, England I will always identify myself as Black man and not as a COLORED (POC), because that is a big disgrace to me..later

@etruscancivilization sure, theoretically, but that's not what's meant socially. POC does not mean yt European descendant and you obviously understand that 🙄

6:40 that's quite normal behavior globally. If you don't look like the majority population, the assumption is you don't speak the local language. Nothing to do with racism.

8:15 that happens in America too. Not in Thailand though. If a foreigner is beating on a Thai, even in self defense, the Thais will gang up on the foreigner. 😅

I am wondering if you are living in what used to be the American sector where there were alot of black military personnel because Germans got used to us there would that be better! Or is the American sector long forgotten, I know that part of history is over

I was a black American who lived in France. Europe is very xenophobic and by extension racist. I was shocked. Most people thought I was “African” but as soon as they realized I was American I would get “American” privilege. It’s a shit show.

I've noticed American privilege as well. It's surprising to see different groups treated so differently.

Oh please. YOU do the same in the United States. Everyone to you is a HISPANIC illegally trying to enter the country. Also what's worse is you try and racialize the meaning of Hispanic even though it has nothing to do with race or phenotype. Also you ignorantly labeling every person of Latin descent as Hispanic when there are several other categories being Franco, Luso, and Italiano. Brazilians are NOT Hispanic they are Luso. Smh

I think its rather crazy that Americans first time recognizing skin color is not everything. In the soviet block every westerner was treated better. Asians treat rich Asians better. Gulf Arabs get their rich treatment around the world. That is how the old world runs since the beginning of time. Still its chauvinism, but i guess better than based on plain monolithic skin color. Nobody can switch off their stereotypes.
