Lord indra wasn't as bad as society portrays him to be. He's the most important deity in the vedas and also the most worshipped one in the rigveda. No yajna starts without his name being recalled. Dear both You need to understand difference between Gods and Ishwar in Indian philosophy and mythology. Krishna is awatara of 'Vishnu' the 'Ishwar' the ultimate power and energy of the universe. Whereas Gods are high level of Human beings acquiring super powers by meditation. But Gods are vulnerable to get ego, anger etc and again slide down to lower level.Thus, Indra is a position as King of Gods...responsibility for rainfall. When he developed ego and becames rude with common man Ishwar (Krishna) has to teach him a lesson.

Indra is the king of Demi gods. He is the lord of rain and thunder. He is also the lord of heaven. Mind you, as per Hinduism there are several planes other than the heaven. For example Shiva lives in shivlok, Vishnu lives in baikunth and bramha lives in bramhlok. All these planes are outside the heaven. In fact, Indra is a position and not a name. Enlightened beings are elevated and picked by Vishnu to fulfill the role of Indra for one cycle of time and then the next Indra starts to rule the heaven. Usually mortals go as far as heaven but realised souls, sages and Demi gods are elevated first to bramhlok, then shivlok and finally to baikunth.

Indra is a demi god. Actually indra is a divine human promoted to being indra. Indra is a position or title taken by the divine human in every cyclical time. There have been many indras, purandar, naahus etc etc were previous indras. Demigods are known as devatas just like in office hierarchies like clerks under the manager and the manager under the ceo etc.

i read most of the comments and they're only telling about one, Indra. but according to some ancient scripts, Govardhan was the greatest devotee of vishnu and he always chants his name. he asked lord ram to visit him. but lord ram( incarnation before krishna) gave promise to meet him on his next incarnation. the one who kept his promise to all devotees whose praise him with love and affection.
