I found an injured robin fledgling. I named it Pete and it is quite friendly. It can’t fly yet, but Pete likes soft dog food and small pieces of soft fruit/veggies. I leave Pete in a horse trailer in a pen with blankets in case it has any parasites and because I have an indoor cat. Taking care of the robin is a good to keep me busy during quarantine along with my other animals.

My sister's friend found one with a fractured wing on her backyard, she knew we had experience raising parrots so she gave it to us since she wasn't able to take care of him, I am a second class rank scout with first aid badge, I have also given service to other hurt birds so I knew how to put the bandage around him the proper way after cleaning the wound with Hydrogen Peroxide, I had my mom and sister assist me for immobilizing the poor guy, it seemed he had been INTENTIONALLY hurt by someone who threw him something like a rock or some kind of hard object that hit his wing and fractured it. your video was much help to us as we didn't exactly know what to feed this little fella.

I just raised a Robin. Tweety, I call her tweets. Im guessing it was a her because it wasn't very bright colored. I took it in from the yard one day after me an my Buddy Rex (Collie-Lab Mix) got back from the store. He ran through the yard and stirred a bunch of birds up. I almost missed Tweets but noticed it wasn't on par with it's family. They hung around trying to protect her but eventually I caught her and tried to help her fly. I tossed her up onto the house a few times and with no luck it ended up back where it started. Then the last time it climbed to the very peak of the house and I knew it's destiny as it prepared to jump. "It's going to land in the back yard" I thought to myself. Sure enough, so I laid claim on helping it to safely and most assuredly become a high soaring bird to claim the air. I found it some bugs the first night and kept it in a hamster cage. Then my family bought some worms every other day and then my uncle bought some more, we had at one time 5 different tubs of earth worms. In all I believe it consumed about 14 different tubs of worms. I would take it outside and kept it used to the wild. It eventually got to flying. It would hop around and hobble I'd have to catch it and put it back in its cage because she just wasn't quite ready. After a week and a half I took it out and she would fly from branch to branch but I'd leave her be that night and let her adjust. She would return every night and day before then but that night she did not come back to the cage. I didn't think she would return. But the next morning she was chirping and waiting for her worms right there at the cage. For about another week and a half Evey morning and every night, all throughout the day we would feed her and see her hanging around. About 3-4 days ago though, she was not in the tree or around the cage. I believe I saw her one more time on the peak of the roof as I whistled front the backyard. Then I had no luck finding her about 5 minutes later. I hope she truly found her wings and didn't find an unfortunate fate. Did notice she has a growth on her right foot. Best I could guess as for why she had trouble finding the blue sky. She would often prep up on her left leg and hike up her right one. I am saddened that she's gone but that's why I took her in, so she could find her place. I hope she returns one day to say hi. If you see my Tweets, tell her that I'm thinking about her and hope she's doing well. Anyways that's my story. I didn't expect my plan to help her would actually favor being played out. I believe it has though. Either way I know she's where she belongs. As always, be kind and be safe. For Those Who Come After

@@elliefoust Awe, she has one wing? That is so sad! But I'm so happy to read that she has someone to care for her. I'm glad she is doing great. You're a kind person ❤️ Our two little birds were to be released a few weeks ago but as we were training them to find sanctuary in their cage, we decided to leave their cage outside one night. The next morning we brought their cages in and we assume something scared one during the night so it pulled out or snagged it's last few feathers on both wings. (Flying feathers) So we had to wait longer until they grew back before releasing. They're very independent. We were so afraid of them imprinting and not wanting to leave. We still are documenting and will have plenty of footage ^•^ we are just waiting until they're ready to be released. Thank you for wanting to see that!! @@AvidGamerGirl I will totally come check it out! I would have assumed she got chomped on by our cat, but our cat doesn’t let you leave alive. It was definitely an injury and not extremely fresh. It scared me to death one day because I was letting her splash in the tub and the tip of wing that was still there fell off!!! Well it was really clear to see it was already detached and healed over and just chilling being held together by feathers 😑🤦🏼♀️ she’s something else. I’m pretty sure she will just never get her big girl feathers. She’s… uniquely beautiful 🤣🤣
@AvidGamerGirl3 жыл бұрын
@@elliefoust oh my gosh!! Your poor birdy, lol thankfully she's alive though and handled the injury. Uniquely beautiful 😂 omg, trust me I understand that because one of the birds we are taking care of won't grow feathers on her stomach for some reason. She's either plucking them off or they just won't grow. She did fly into her brothers cage and he pecked her head too so she has a bald spot. We keep them in separate, big cages, but left their little doors open to know they can enter and leave when they please once we release them (we will leave their cages outside in case they come back for refuge) but she must've flown into his cage that night. Thankfully she didn't lose an eye but...bless her heart, poor thing looks like she was thrown in a washer. 😂 We call her our special child. She's a little derp bird and makes weird noises. Lol.

@@barryritter345 Thank you! To be honest, I'm not 100% sure that it's a robin. It just looks more like a young Robin nestling than any other bird I could compare it to (it's very young with only a thin covering of pin feathers on its wings). We tried a variety of things to feed it because it wouldn't gape its mouth for the first night, but it seems to love beef cat food. We have several different kinds of berries which it wouldn't eat at first, but perhaps it will now that it has a healthy appetite. We plan on getting mealworms soon to crush for it.

More like a Starling or Grackle. British Robins (Robin Redbreast) are less than half the size with both males and females having a bright red chest. Very tame and like hedgerows and gardens, and shortbread biscuits!
@Gnarmarmilla4 жыл бұрын
That’s really neat man. I love how it hopped over to the table when you told it to. I always thought Robbins had inferior intelligence to other birds but they actually seem pretty smart. I just had a Robbin nest on my back porch and I saw a black rat snake eat one of them so I drove off the snake but I didn’t take the other three inside and I am kind of regretting that now, because I came home tonight and the nest was knocked over and the three new born chicks were gone. But Robbins eat worms, snakes eat Robbins, eagles and hawks eat snakes, it’s what our God has done. I’m not sure I would have had time to feed those three chicks with my 12 hour work schedule so it’s alright...

If you put food (worms) to its mouth and it eats, keep feeding until it stops opening its mouth. No need to feed at night but several times throughout the day. Once you commit to this, it will take lots of attention and time. Good luck! I found it to be a very rewarding experience.

Did you rehab him at all? Like teach him to build nests and hunt for food. Did you ever see him again?

Swift360 He or she was ready to be on his/her own. I never saw him again but the whole purpose was to make him independent so he could live a normal Robin life. I found it to be very satisfying.

I just found a bird I'm my backyard just a whole ago and I don't know what to do, it is a Robin and it got it's back tail feathers chewn off, it doesn't seem like it can fly at the moment. It's sitting in the corner of the fence now resting. If anyone knows what I should do please let me know, do I help it or let nature do it's thing? Feels bad.

p.s... Great tip on cutting the meal worms heads off.. If I didn't see this I wouldn't have thought about this and hurt the Robins. I haven't got them yet.. Just getting prepared as the Robin living in my door window should be hatching her eggs by Sunday.. Would have been Thursday if under perfect conditions, but yes this is a busy household.. Anyway,, Thanks again..

Found one mostly dead 2 days ago.Got kicked out of the nest by the bigger siblings. I couldn't leave the little guy in the cold dirt to die. He is eating like there is no tomorrow! I hope he makes it.

It grew strong and healthy then when it was ready it flew away to start living as a wild bird. It did not return to my knowledge but that’s ok.

I know the feeling. My tweets just conquered that same feat days ago. Miss that little bird already.

It may come back. I’ve seen some birds pick the same nesting area each year.

Did it EVER come back? I thought the robin we rescued would visit often so it broke my heart when he left and didn't come back 😞 ...I just worry and wonder if he's ok. Seems like you did a great job - thank you so much for sharing.
