I have played a lot of modded and vanilla kenshi. I can tell ya lots, but for now I'll tell the equipment. When you are going against united cities, you want maximum armor pen and sharpness defence, their katanas are, to be honest, are quite ineffective against other factions, as they lack AP. Their samurai armor however is 1 of the strongest armor suits in the game. When you are going against Holy nation, its quite tricky. I would recommend a hybrid between cleavers to break armor, and katanas/sabers to take advantage of their poor limb protection. Their weapons deal both blunt and sharp damage with high AP, so most reasonable choice would probably be medium armor, so you aren't as encumbered but still have defence. Also please don't use skeletons, they specialise at dealing with them. If you choose to go against the shek, i would likely recommend high damage weapons, as AP is not as important for them due to their bad equipment. Their weapons are, however, deal a lot of blunt damage, with some having AP. I would recommend either light equipment to take advantage of their slowness or heavy armor to match their high blunt damage. If you decide to vipe out either of the hives, you also want high damage options with less AP, while prefering lesser amounts of characters, as grouping up is a bad idea due to their abbundace of polearms with high reach and good AP. Also make sure you got at least 90% acid coverage. Various bandit factions traditionally employ sabers and katanas, while using fairly bad armor. Heavy armor and high damage is recommended. High-end factions generally in the east-south region, also called in-lore as forbiden zone require good skills and equipment, generally high AP and heavy armor. Cannibals are quite easy to deal with katanas or other high damage options, but have some AP options. Medium armor is recommended.

@pastnormal tbh you could just shove 5 guys with 75~ stat and good gear into any conflict and not bother with tactics. I'm just speaking what would be effective for less cost. Of course, some hyper skilled mf with a sword the size of a man will beat anyone without trouble.

im on my first playthrough. im playing on just normal settings, i had to turn it down when i started my base but its back to normal and i must say i have not lost anyone yet but soon ill have to go out and pick fights to progress and im scared to lose my guys :(

From a Kenshi veteran, I recommend having an overseer far away enough from the fight to not engage, but close enough to heal whoever goes down. It's an ideal strategy when you're going into planned fights.
