Raising arches for our second Quonset Hut

Sharing how we raised the first 4 arches for our second Quonset Hut.

Use your lift to raise the arch and walk it from the sides while the lift drives into place...fully assembled! The flat level slab perfect for full assembly...even with 5 or 6 saw horses identical in height so you don't have to crawl around on the ground for full assembly...Then when the lift is set in the center narrow side perpendicular to the arch lift it and drive it into place with the boys walking the ends...The lift should be able to raise it higher than needed so it can slowly lower the full arch into place...equipment can work harder than you do all day and why shouldn't it? Narrow boards can be cante-levered from the top rail near the end leaving you room to maneuver and drive the lift... the top rail will lift and support the arch from underneath...Lower it to set the ends in place...The lift should be narrow sides perpendicular to the arch...Material trays with hard ware etc off the deck and fastened to trays inside lift rails with a holster for the screw gun...everything at reach a moments notice including caulk... once the lift in place at center it will go much easier...charge the lift and screw gun batteries every nite and at lunch...should get 12 a day once you get the hang of it!a rolling rubbermaid material cart will hold hardware and tools for the slab work and can be rolled at a moments notice to where it is needed ...saving the hands and feet is the key to longevity in the trades...we only got so much umf in our careers...

Put up a 40x60 raised first arch complete then individual panels from that point forward. Gave us two people on each side assembling panels and met in the middle. Each arch took us about45 min to complete and that was finger tight bolts in every hole. Once fifth arch was up we went back and tightened bolts in first four arches. Had all arches up in four days and 2 1/2 days for end walls. All done with four people, and rolling scaffolding. Nice method you used too, there is no wrong way as long as it gets done, but if I build another one I will use my method.

I watched your first Quonset hut video and kept asking myself, “Why doesn’t he turn the lift so the pieces are at one end so he has room to work?” And now I see you saw what I was seeing and turned your lift. I am in the planning stage to build one to turn into a home so thank you for showing me the rights and wrongs. I was also thinking if you could put the 3 pieces together for the top and 2 pieces for both sides on the ground, attach the 2 lower halves then lift the top and connect? I’ve never done one of these so I don’t know.

hf sells magnetic metal bowls that will hold nuts and bolts and stick to beam real handy when you only have 2 hands

Two. We bought acreage with my brother in law and sister in law. We are each building a Quonset for our families to live in.
