out looking at a field of buckwheat that we will harvest for seed production!
Enjoy
Welcome to Farming With Carp. This channel will show you the jobs that we do on our farm in Indiana each day. We are a regenerative organic farm that capitalizes on the uses of cover crops. We raise corn, soybeans, wheat, peas and alfalfa. We also have a growing herd of livestock on the farm that we graze across our acres. Come along for the ride!

We double cropped organic buckwheat after yellow peas a couple hundred miles north of you. It works but harvest is extremely time sensitive. Trying to harvest it dry in October but before it all shatters is difficult. We straight cut with a Draper head. Volunteer buckwheat has been a pain to deal with in the organic setting as well

Dave Brandt told me you can take it standing. I'm doing buckwheat for the first time this year as well for a fall harvest. Dave said once the frost hits in October, you can harvest it just fine. I also thought about swathing this fall, but I think we'll use the bean head instead.

First off really enjoy your content! I'm going to start planting buckwheat myself and I swore that I wouldn't after seeing my dad plant a bunch one year and right before harvest of the best looking crop of buckwheat you've ever seen a storm came and flattened it. In other Year's before we harvested it after a frost but now I've seen enough guys grow it and if your going to get serious about it swath it. One other point I should make is with the more powerful combines and draper heads you maybe able to push the green stalks through. Looking forward to watching when you harvest.

Been planting Organic Buckwheat since 19' for local honey farm and as a weed suppressing cover crop. We could be buying your seed next season. Maybe road trip south next spring for a cash and carry discount?

Any updates on how this crop turned out? Did your plan for harvest work as you hoped?

It's indeterminate so it doesn't die until a frost hits it. People plant it late June often so flowering isn't during the hottest months which can cause a lot of flower blasting. Early planted works too though
