Күн бұрын

We have been raising hogs most of my life, dad did it on a large scale back in his hey day. I raise pigs on a small scale because I will never be able to compete with the large scale guys, we are catering to the family who wants a hog, locally grown in a small scale environment. Plenty of fresh water, feed and a rub on the back, that they know how it was cared for.
In this video we touch on the barn we have been using and some recent upgrades we have done to be able to increase our small scale production.

I'm not even actively farming and my buildings aren't big enough. My Dad always got all the machinery inside under a roof. We had a baler with a thrower, a mixer mill, an elevator, 2- 4 bottom plows, 2 cultivators, a disc, a 16 ft. bumper hitch livestock trailer, a 2 row mounted corn picker, and a 145 bushel manure spreader. If we needed something from the quonset building, it was a half day affair dragging everything out to get what we wanted and then putting everything back away.

No matter what you build, no matter how big you build it, you will one day wish it was bigger. We build this house 20 years ago and let me tell you……..I’ve been told it should have been bigger. I think she means the house.

Seems like a building is never big enough. Dad always said once you have the width, doesn't cost much more to increase the length. Nice setup for raising a few hogs though. I have been thinking about raising a couple for my own use. Nice video my Friend!

Beautiful barn as it should be built by a professional the funny thing is I don’t think anybody is ever built a barn and said after a while they thought it was big enough it always seems like garage doors and gates need to be wider and Burns need to be bigger

That's a well thought out set up Steve. But like you said, bigger IS better. We always had hogs back on the home place. We fattened 'em on skim milk from the Holstein cows and ground feed. You got the whole family in on it...good deal. The son looks to know what he's doing with the welding stick and the g-daughter wields a mean paint brush too. LOL Nice job.

You got a really awesome setup ! I tried to raise pigs when I first bought my place because it was already setup and I lost my butt on them . When I was a kid we would take our pigs to the stock yards to sell them . Do they even have places like that anymore ? Thanks for sharing and have a blessed evening !

Steve: Barn aside, I really liked your hog setup. How have those gates held up? I’m going to set up some pens, and trying to think of something that will hold up
@AnglesideFarm
@AnglesideFarm Жыл бұрын
Thank you. These gates have held up well so far, I don’t see any signs of failure yet. 1 1/2” x 1 1/2” angle iron makes a pretty stout gate, weld the hog panels in and don’t spare the hot glue. Thanks for asking and best of luck!
@Thomasfarmstn

How many hogs do you typically run at a time Steve?
@AnglesideFarm
@AnglesideFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Well with the new barn addition I believe we can do 3 groups of 10-12, or one big group of 30. Small in the eyes of most, but I’m fine with that number. Thanks Russ for stopping by sir
