Raising My Border Collie Puppy to a Year Old

Hello Welcome to The Exploring K9s. I’m Shelby, I am 20 years old. I love training dogs, especially my personal dogs; It’s my passion. This is Unity my first serious well bred dog to have a full sport career in her future! This is my pup from as soon as I got pictures of her after being birthed to now turning a year old the day of this release April, 28th 2021. I had so much fun putting together this video and found it short to fit all what I wanted to share in it! Unity has been an absolute joy to raise and I am so thankful for her. We can go out and have fun training and playing and she will want to cuddle in bed when we get home! Her personality has brought so much light in my life. The day I got her was a personally rough day and since that day of receiving her she’s continued to make any rough times, way better and more bearable. We have done so many lovely things together creating so many amazing priceless memories. Goal is for her to do agility, dock diving, hopefully disc, want to dabble in herding and possibly service work once she is matured out and I evaluate her temperament for it! 💛 So thankful for how incredible she has been of a dog and happy to make another video after my first of a puppy to 6 months old! This video is my best way showing what we’ve gotten to do and enjoy since our time together of 2 months old to a year. 💛 such a bright future ahead for this pup.

Ears are special in our BCs! My first girl-Gem-had flat ears as she was 1/2 Aussie, 1/2 BC. My Tess's right ear was straight up while her left ear stuck out Port (left). Her son JackBNimble's stood straight up, but often leaned back. His girlfriend's ears stayed up, and her cousin/BFF Gypsy Rose Lee was a red/white with 1/2 pricked ears and a right blue eye and left brown eye. The 2 girls were my last BCs I was able to own due to health concerns, but if I were able, I'd adopt an older, retired BC female who needs love and companionship.

Our family had a male dog named Smokey too, but he wasn't a BC, just a 1/2 Black Russian Terrier, 1/2 Poodle. Smart too; he also used to climb on top of our station wagon and watch out for folks trying to break into our car. Smokey also walked up attic-liked steps to our tree house and walking back down as well. JackBNimble, our BC, went up a plastic sliding board and going down; he soon graduated to the metal one at my niece's ele. school. After that, he played Border Collie Soccer with anyone-no rules, just fun.

So cute. I lost my my 1 year old dog this month. She got real sick and her body was shutting down. She would of turned 2 in January. I got her ashes back yesterday. She's back home where she belongs.

Thank you so much! 😭💛 Haha! I’ve been dabbling in training since I was 14 💛 has always been a natural thing for me I’m blessed for. I promise you will learn with time how to communicate with your lab 😂 I think of it has a harmonious relationship. Building a solid bond by doing things together, having tons of treats on you to help teach your a good time and set boundaries and rules and have some fun! It’ll happen 💛☺️

You've done so well with Unity she's gorgeous and looks like she will be an amazing sports dog, I'm 20 too and just got my first border collie a few months ago and am hoping to compete with him in agility/obedience in the future so it's interesting to see how other people train and socialise their dogs. He's only my second dog (have a cocker spaniel who I got a year ago) so I still have a long way to go but it's definitely not an easy feat to train a dog though they are such an loving and intelligent breed. May I ask what camera you use?

Thank you so much for the kind words! Also Awee congratulations on your first border collie! ☺️ they are addicting and like potato chips so after one I am sure you will want another. Also I love cocker spaniels they found like a fun combination 😌 also definitely take your time and at a pace where you feel both you and your dog are happy and successfully understanding one another and the most important aspect in my opinion is often the bond and relationship you build! I have had quite a good amount of dogs so I have formed myself a good routine and have plenty of experience for techniques side of things 😅 so the pace I’ve went isn’t typically the pace most do. 😅 Which is more than okay and sometimes the dogs I have take longer than this. Most definitely a loving and intelligent breed! I love how their brain works and for a camera for filming I just use my iPhone, but for photography I use a Nikon Z6 ☺️

Believe me when I tell you, you have made a great choice. Our little girl (11 months) is our fourth border collie. We still have an old boy 13. They are unlike any other breed I have had - super smart and return the love you give them in buckets.

I call my Border collie Wing nut because he is nuts but as a watch dog the best. I have had him since a pup and he grew up with me currently asleep at my feet. Very devoted dog and wow smart but lol nuts. I have 3 and they all are males with nuts and we all get along .

Cute! How big is the dad? My border pup was 15 pounds at 10 weeks and consistently way off the charts, but he'd be about 80 pounds if I followed those! 🤯 Did you find your pup was on the growth chart or also off??

Hey! So actually there isn’t a standard for border collie height, that being said size varies significantly! Most border collies tend to be in the mid 20-50lb size range! Very rare I see either out of that size category but it does happen! Unity seems tiny for a lot but she actually weighs the same and is close in height to a lot of the sport/working well bred border collies I know! Females tend to be 20lb-40lb and Males I’ve seen 30lb-60lb!

Yes! So for daily training/capturing behaviors you like and socializing/desensitizing I suggest using their daily kibble, if you run out have plenty of treats and also high value treats for extra scary or hard stuff, and to stay out of dog parks, only let the dog interact with other dogs who seem calm but friendly, can be playful but needs to know how to be gentle with a puppy, and for people, have people ignore the puppy and as the puppy decides to go up to others have them having treats or kibble to give them, if a dog or person is coming on too strong and your dog seems scared, advocate for them and back up or take space, if a treat or toy can make them more enthusiastic then also could do that instead. Take them out once a week maybe or whenever you can to a pet friendly place not to greet other dogs or people but to just work and train with you, take in the environment and just get use to all the people, pets, noises and things, dog and people neutrality in my opinion is better than a dog who wants to run up and say hi to everything and everyone which is why I typically most of the time just work a dog to be engaged with me and ignore it’s surroundings. So with close people you trust and if you feel like being nice and your puppy is up and happy for some pets, you can let people when out and but id have a release word specifically for it beforehand so your puppy doesn’t constantly look out and go out of its way to engage with others unless that is what you want! ☺️ but also make sure to not do too much and overwhelm your puppy, make things normal daily life with some happy encouragement and when they are hesitant or fearful be patient and work through it calmly with them 😄

I’m all for the vegan lifestyle for humans and definitely support that and hope to become vegan myself. 🥰Sadly though I do not recommend that for a dog and don’t find it the proper balanced diet that they thrive on so I sadly cannot recommend any vegetarian dog food! All for humans doing it and I think it’s amazing but for dogs I feed a healthy balanced diet which includes meat I am sorry 🥺

Dogs cannot survive, let alone thrive, without meat. A vegan diet *will* screw them up.
