Thanks Christiane! I just have three eggs left unhatched and I don't think they will hatch but I'm letting her sit them so that she doesn't want to get off the nest and run about with the chicks until they are a little more robust and can get out of the way of her feet! She is really gentle though and doing a great job. Bisous bisous de Normandie, Sue et Andy xxx

Nostalgia!!! Thanks Rob Bob! I have a lot of catching up to do watching your videos but we are trying to get all the food harvested for Winter and plant some more vegetables out in the greenhouse. I also need to think about bringing my turmeric in - they have made huge plants but I'm just worrying about the weather getting too cool. All the very best from still sunny France, Sue

Thanks! Yes I was getting a bit nervous but we had visitors over the weekend, which took my mind off it! The double box is a great idea too! I feed them five cereals, which are rice, barley, rye, wheat and oats, then I add, as a precaution for B2 Riboflavin deficiency, a sprinkle of yeast flakes, and I moisten this whole mix with mineral water. I've given them an apple and lettuce from the garden, as well as flies and worms and some wild grass seed heads. All the very best and stay tuned, Sue

Thanks Dale, they were! The guy was actually a carpenter, so as I hoped, the dust on the egg box was from that. They must have been very fresh too because the fertility of quail eggs diminishes by day and anything over six days makes for very poor hatchability. They are so loveable but I think they are going to be a handful, particularly as I want to freerange them with Mummy whilst they are small & hope to get them calm & tame enough to freerange when I'm out gardening. All the very best, Sue

+Irene the Henherd Aa haa so it worked!! I have another mini Cappuccino this year, with exactly the same plumage and determined personality. What a great name you have, does this mean you actually take your hens foraging, I think that would be a great idea. I am very much musing about this at the moment because I just wrote a piece on my blog about tree fodder, there is also a film on here and tracing its roots back to and beyond 'pannage' and pigs foraging through forests. I can imagine that could be done with hens and what a great way to feed them too. All the very best from Normandie, Sue

+Pavlovafowl Sorry for the late reply. ^^' Yes, our homestead was built on an old hay field, so the birds and I would go out to the rock piles and hunt for insects. It was great fun; sadly I don't live out in the countryside anymore...but my heart is still out there. :)

Yes I soak the cereals in water, I don't really like feeding dry grain. I feed sprouted grain to my flocks and the quail will be on this pretty soon. There is the dust issue but also by sprouting, you are changing something with little enzyme activity into a growing plant with all the increase in nutrient that entails and also a diminution in phytic acid, which chelates minerals like calcium. Don't worry about asking questions, so happy to know you want to keep quail. Best Wishes, Sue

Good Luck! You have my sympathy and I also think quail are nocturnal - at least mine are at the moment! If you think you have a B2 deficiency then chopped raw liver, if you can't get yeast flakes is the best source. For general prevention though, almonds and sesame seeds are also a good standby. You can get a spread called Marmite, which is made of yeast extract and my sister used this successfully on curled toe paralysis of a chick when she couldn't get organic yeast flakes. All the best, Sue

Good job Cappuccino, I've been checking all weekend to see how she has been doing. The playpen was a great idea. I've used a double box for my sitting hen. Leaving the water and feed on one side and the nest on the other end. Please keep us updated. I would so much like to do this. Our area once had wild quail, not as many now. Could you kindly list what your feeding them.

My hens won't eat flax seeds but that might just be them. I do find that different breeds eat different things and I'm sort of inclined to the idea that it's their 'paleo diet'. I know they are used in horse feed to promote shiny coats! My Frizzles get very dry and brittle feathers in extremes of temperature, which is probably why Cappuccino was oiling her feathers ready for the possible onslaught, I give them organic virgin coconut oil both on the skin and to eat, it promotes feather growth.

Thanks, I've nutritional yeast flakes, My older ladies seem to have dry feathers this year. So I want to change their diet. I was planning on flax seeds. Have you ever tried used them? Do you let the cereals soak the water before feeding? Sorry for so many questions. Love your "children"

Well spotted! A chicks is hatched with limited/no dietary enzymes/gut flora which is crucial for the immune system in fact new thinking believes the gut is the immune system so if a mother chews up food and passes it on then she is providing it with the enzymes from her own mouth. It is a brilliant system! All the very best from Normandie, Sue

Help!!! I think my bantam silkie is squishing her newly hatched quail babies to death! What can I do besides separating them and putting them under a heat lamp?
@Pavlovafowl
@Pavlovafowl 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, this sometimes does happen at the beginning when a hen is not aware of the size and fragility of the quail. Normally with the mother quail, the chicks burrow and cling to the feathers rather than sit underneath for the first days after hatch - she can even carry them like that - I've seen my quail do this. Your Cochin should learn to move her feet by keeping them on the ground rather than lifting them but this may take some time. Therefore, I would put them under a lamp until they are a few days older but still keep them with her when you are there to supervise - so that they preserve the mutual bonds. Unfortunately raising quail with a hen is not always a trouble-free exercise and it can require constant supervision at the start, however the rewards are great as the quail chicks learn what it is to have a mother and they do go on to become mothers themselves. Some hens have no problems at all, some do, all hens are individuals, so there is no standard behaviour. It is not their fault, nor ours, it is just we are having to make up for centuries of caged breeding and the loss to the quail of most of their natural behaviour. These come back through the hen but sadly sometimes at a cost. This is about a learning curve and for you and your hen it is a steep one and needs quick thinking and sudden solutions, which you both will have. Do get back to me and let me know how you get on. All the very best, Sue xx

Hi was wondering what is it u said...yeast flakes?....can they have oats?....what is "flattened cereal"? Thank u.
@Pavlovafowl
@Pavlovafowl 9 жыл бұрын
Ron Grey Hi Ron, flattened cereals, if I buy them directly from an organic dairy farm are mixed organic cereals put through a roller (they are fed to calves as a supplement) such as oats, wheat, triticale, barley, they can also include legumes such as vetch and peas. If I buy them from a shop here in France, they are sold as 'Five cereals' and contain rice, wheat, rye, barley and oats. As I can not get hatching eggs from an organic source and because my quail chicks are a lot more energetic than those bred in cages - they quickly reveal any nutritional deficiencies, which have been passed on through the egg from the parent. In quail these are usually in the B complex range and one of the first is riboflavin, hence the yeast flakes. In the main I feed these cereals just for the first few days and I also feed my sprouted grain with which I feed the rest of my flock. I do not feed dry grain nor do I in fact like cultivated grain for poultry, it is not their natural diet, so for me at the moment it is just a necessity until I get more land. However, for my quail I can easily provide enough invertebrate protein and my baby quail quickly move on to this with just a little sprouted grain and a lot of vegetation/vegetables. There is a film missing in this series which I have not edited yet - it is quail chicks and nutritional deficiencies - it is coming soon, as is the blog to accompany it on holistic-hen.blogspot.com Each of my films will eventually have a written version with more details on this blog. I just need to do them! All the best, Pavlovafowl aka Sue

Can't eat what? There is a hen here too so the food is for her as well but my quail will eat everything she eats. It's all organic and home-made and home-grown food, so better quality than most of the ready made commercial game bird mixes. These chicks will be on organic egg and wild protein too as you will see in my next videos in the series. All the best, Sue

Pavlovafowl I mean its so big for them to eat
@Pavlovafowl
@Pavlovafowl 7 жыл бұрын
You make a very interesting point, however, one this food is moists and the grain is sprouted and the quail can easily break bits off. Two, in the wild food would be presented like this, not in crumbs. Three and this is the really important reason, a really good mother hen will automatically break up food for her chicks. Here I have a hen hatching quail, they are totally different to what she or they would expect, different language, different, smell, even different physical shape, her calling them and breaking up food, helps to quickly establish a bond. Although these little quail have sharp beaks, I always feed food moistened, in the wild quail don't actually drink, which is why they always look awkward drinking in captivity, they get the moisture from their food. Hope this answers your but there is also whole series of films I made call Quail Diaries showing all the stages and you will also see how my hen and later my quail, catch quite large invertebrate prey and kill and break that up for the quail chicks. It's all part of my trying to give them a good start in life so as to bring out their natural foraging and hunting instincts and to trust and bond with their mother. This is something most quail in captivity have lost. All the very best and sorry if I gave you an essay but I thought it needed clarification, Sue

Pavlovafowl interesting, actually I dont know much about the life of quails in wild,I try to give mine a respectful life, and they seem to like it, when I let them out and take them to the garden or a new place they freeze and dont seem to like it, the just stay in their cage (fairly large, with soil) and dont step out even if I left the door open all day long. sorry for my english
@Pavlovafowl
@Pavlovafowl 7 жыл бұрын
Don't apologise for your English it is perfect! What I have always found with quail, (and my chickens too now that they are so used to a forest garden), is that being out in the open actually makes them very wary. They prefer well planted areas with small clearings and if you want your quail to nest and raise chicks they need covered nesting sites such as tall grasses or plants, for example, mine like nesting under rosemary bushes. Your quail feel safe at the moment because the cage gives them the idea of a protected area and they are used to it. If you want to expand their living quarters and get them out of the cage, then try opening the door in an area where they will be under the cover of bushes or leafy plants, this is why I use a greenhouse. I actually also free ranged my quail chicks with their mother hen up in a meadow, but I cut it so that they had a section of very tall grasses where they could hide if they felt uncertain. You can see my set-up here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYurdWerp8lojtU I also free-ranged them one at a time in the garden with their mother in another video in this series. I also have a two part film about quail changing from caged living to being in a greenhouse. You may also find too that feeding wild invertebrate protein, which has high levels of vitamin B12 and the amino acid l-methionine, will make you quail less likely to be nervous and freeze when they are faced with a new situation. I am sure you are looking after them very well but if you'd like to experiment with more outdoor 'wild' living then these are just a few ideas. All the very best and nice chatting with you, Sue
