My house is on 1/3 acre in a city. We have 14 birds (6 chickens, 6 ducks, 2 turkeys), and 1 pig in our back yard. Fun, and entertaining. We had a few attacks by raccoons on our chickens in the past. The pig seems to help! I have been thinking about rabbits recently! Thank you for your videos.

Love your videos! I have a year left of college then I plan on starting a homestead as a hobby until I feel I can do it full time. My only suggestion would be to save up and get a camera that can record in HD. Your videos are great! Definitely subscribing!

I look forward to following this series. We want to raise meat rabbits and know nothing about it. My biggest concern was the winters which are unpredictable here in the center of the country. I was concerned about how to shelter them. Thanks for this series!!!!!! Lee

Brings back memories! I had a slew of New Zealands and French lops that I raised for meat and such. Kept them under a spreading oak with lots of shade and never had any problems, in the heat and humidity of florida. Can't wait to get back into it. A bad divorce can't keep a good man down forever! lol..
@gopackgo22359 жыл бұрын
My hubby is so choked because I am looking for a buck and a doe (New Zealands) for meat. I barbq-ed him a store bought one so he could try one and he liked it. But now he says he doesn't. I told him he doesn't have to do anything but enjoy the meat, he does not have to dispatch or clean them at all. They are such inexpensive meat to grow for a homesteader. Anyhow I am so frustrated. Just venting! Glad you are doing a series on them. Maybe you can help me sway him. He loves your videos, so make lots of great points for me, he'll heed what you say, as I am getting nowhere.

Tried the meat rabbit thing years ago. I started with a doe and a buck. By the end of the week, my wife had them named and following her around like dogs. And the wife made it clear that there were no meat bunnies at our place. So, they lived in celibacy until they were called to bunny heaven.

Your rabbit cages are clean, and organized. However I see a lot of people using just a metal cage for the rabbits to stand on. I would dig up some grass and put some in each cage so the rabbits have a place to stand that isn't metal. Such as a small patch of sod.

Thanks for sharing, I thought rabbits were hard to keep and breed due to temperature "goldilocks zone" needs. I had given up on the idea but now you have me thinking about it again! Looking forward to more of your rabbit vids. You have a fairly simple setup, I think I could keep them warm in winter but not sure how to keep them cool enough during hot & humid summers in N GA.
@jnull09 жыл бұрын
I use a solar panel and computer fans on each cage to keep ours cool in summer, and it really worked great for us. Just hook the small panel to the fans directly, then when the sun comes up, the fans come on. J

we also use frozen 20oz pop bottles during the really hot days,they love to lay right on them with the solar fans blowing across their faces

Sophia Diblasio I have never seen that and I have been raising rabbits and the only problem I have had is the young 2-4 week olds dying
@kimkkroha10376 жыл бұрын
I would not use a carpet mat- they will chew it and the fibers/rubber maybe would be bad. +Sophis DiBlasio, bumblefoot is a infection in chickens. sorehocks is what rabbits get from wrong wire floor- wrong gage or width of wire, and dampness. a wood board or ceramic tile in summer will alleviate any issues.
@doloresdavis17804 жыл бұрын
I am surprised the wood around the cages is not chewed up...maybe because you provide them with chew toys?!? I have never raised rabbits but mother in law did and her cages with wood were always chewed on as were her nest boxes.

Not to be rude but you should not get rabbits till you know as much as you need to know
@Wowthatsabighat5 жыл бұрын
You want to feed about 1/8-1/4 cup pellets per 5 pounds body weight, with hay always available. Otherwise you'll fuck up their gastrointestinal system.

@TrehanCreekOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
Great video. Thinking about doing rabbits on my place but have a few questions. How many rabbits do you average producing with that one female each year? What price do you usually get for the baby rabbits? How much does it cost you to buy feed and care for all of the rabbits you raise in one year, including medicines, etc? How much actual profit will you make off those two rabbits in a typical year? Is it worth the time and effort for the money you make? I'm in a very hot climate here in central MS with summer temps last week in mid July above 95 each day and heat index up to 110 degrees most days. Don't think a solar powered computer fan is going to cut it. Is it a bad idea to try raising rabbits in a very hot climate? Thanks for any input you can give me.

Great starter video! I like the hidey hole addition you have on your cages! My husband and I built our cages a couple months ago or so and we now are raising rabbits and just had our first litter over Thanksgiving. Our cages look very much like yours but without the hidey hole. I'm currently using a tarp as well over the cages to keep the cold wet wind out but I have to admit this is very cumbersome to mess with to me. They pee on it and it gets on your hands when you lift it up etc. Gross! I noticed you mentioned your meat rabbits were in a barn....what do you do to make sure the rabbits get sunshine or at least daylight on cloudy days? My b-i-l used to raise rabbits and mentioned to me that I just need to make sure they get some sunshine/light daily, but with the tarp over them that's a difficult task. Any idea how much daylight is necessary to keep them healthy? Wondered about adding full spectrum lighting, any thoughts on that?

If you put bunnies in the direct sun they will heat stroke soooo easy. Remember they are used to livin under ground😁. I accidentally 'yard baked' my rabbits once. I thought the neighbor poisoned them. It started a small war.

D’Argent: the word is French, and it’s pronounced “darjen”: two syllables, no apostrophe, no T, the G is pronounced as a soft J as in other French words, “jshhh” like telling someone to be quiet.

How many are in the average litter? Do you breed them in the spring for maximum use of grass, etc, to keep costs as low as possible? Does it cost less to winter over a doe and a buck rather than buy baby rabbits in the spring?
