Hi Capt, If I may, I'll pass on some of my thoughts regarding your propeller selection and testing methods. Firstly, welcome to be world of heavy, deep-v boats running single outboards. It's a long learning process. Wait till you get twin engines! Let's talk motor height first. You're height adjustment, going up one hole seems spot on in this video. From a drag perspective, the higher the motor, the better performance. But there comes a point going too high, where you start to lose thrust during turning manoeuvres due to cavitation. As a general rule, to confirm engine height, the motor should not cavitate when turning and fully trimmed in. It should start to caviatate when trimmed up in a normal running position, when moderate turning is conducted. This confirms the motor is as high as possible yet still allows moderate turning performance. This is why you trim in to turn hard. Also known as optimum mounting height. Your height, at the top hole, seems great! Good job Captain! Now for trim. It appears you have the philosophy that the motor needs to be fully trimmed in to offer the best economy and performance. This is incorrect! You should gain a few hundred rpm at WOT from the fully trimmed in position, to the maximum trimmed up position. The target WOT RPM should be reached at a fully trimmed up position, as far as it goes before either the nose starts to porpoises, or the propeller starts to caviate. This is the wot target rpm. This test for WOT RPM should be at a maximum weight configuration as you did in the test. By virtue of doing this way, it means at light weight configurations, you can over rev the motor. That's completely fine as you can limit maximum throttle at light weights to ensure you don't exceed max rpm or encroach on the limiter. This is how you generically benchmark a propeller for general boating purposes. It's certainly not the best way! Propeller Selection Like above, you seem to have a philosophy that you need to be going fast with good economy. This works in principle with small boats and motors, but you are not in that field. Your expectations have to be realistic. Do you want a high speed boat or do you want a long range boat? Its a trade off situation. They don't go hand in hand. In your case, you're looking to cruise, at a cruising range of speeds, to achieve best fuel economy. If this philosophy is correct, why does it matter what max speed you're getting! I'd be sacrificing top end speed for best mid range economy and holeshot thrust! That means, at say 3600-4400 rpm range, you want to be getting the best economy, and accept whatever the speed that produces for your boat type and configuration. Best economy means lowest engine load at the highest speed possible. This is where your tests should be aimed. Run each propeller at 3400, 3600, 3800, 4000 and 4200rpms and data log the speed and fuel flow for each set point. Then, by comparing data fields, you can perform analysis and derive outcomes. My personal opinion on your propeller setup is that your engine load is still far too high, and to reduce that load, you have to reduce the propeller diameter. For a heavy deep v fibreglass boat like yours, 14 1/2 inch propeller has too much surface area for a 225, creating too much rotational resistance for your 225hp to easy turn. That's why you're already at 15 inch pitch. Yuck! It's effectively lugging your engine due diameter. You're only reaching maximum rpm because you're all the way down to a 15inch pitch. This is why you have high fuel flow! Increasing diameter increases surface area which increases drag, increasing fuel burn. To unload it, try a 14 1/4 inch diameter, or even a 14inch if you're really heavy, which will unload the rotational drag of the prop, and play with pitch. I'd say a 14 1/4 at 17inch pitch would give you much better mid range economy, despite the fact you will loose some top end speed. But remember, top speed is not the priority, economy is! Going a larger diameter prop will further load the engine and hinder economy. The only way to to reach results is either by trial and error, or by analysis of data. This will give you the absolutely best performance and economy. I hope this assists you gaining positive results. Get that laptop out, open excel, and start logging data. All the best, love your videos capt!

@OutOnTheReef can't wait to see your results! Hoping you find that sweet spot! Also, I've recently discovered the 4.2litre has 1.75:1 gearbox ratio. The older 3.3litre model had a 2:1 ratio and your old 200 4cylinder has a 1.86:1 ratio. So you will be able to run a slightly larger diameter prop than I suggested above, being that your gearbox ratio is shorter. All the best, keep the videos coming! Big fan from Brisbane, Australia 🇦🇺

Hi Cap, I'm glad you're making progress, raising it was very good, but you now need a 16 inch dia prop in my opinion. As a side note, if you keep this engine height on those bolts you need to drill another hole at the top each side to have 2 bolts per side, as its too high for that bolt and it will put stress on the transom when underway.
@OutOnTheReefАй бұрын

@busuttilmarkАй бұрын
@@OutOnTheReef The issue is when you push throttle to go forward the engine will want to pull away from the top of the transom. Great job raising engine. Choosing the right prop is +/-. Technically, all being equal 3 blade should raise rpm, less hole shot, and higher top end speed. 4 blade is lower rpm, better hole shot, and lower rpm. The key is finding perfect pitch and size, but higher HP equals more fuel. Rule of thumb is HP rating (10%) equals fuel burn per hr so 22.5 gallons at high rpm. It's maybe possible, but don't think you will get the same mpg with a bigger motor unless they changed the motor design to be more fuel efficient. I'm sure you know all this already just trying to help. Lunch looked delicious!!

Capt. Glad to see you are getting better mileage by going up on the motor, Now you need to prop it right. Some backcountry fishermen use a four blade prop because you get a better hole shot and get on plane faster when fishing skinny water but you will loose some top end. I have never used then on backcountry boat nor my offshore boat. I like to cruise as as I can😂 and the three blades did the trick for me. Capt. A 4 blade prop requires more engine height to perform correctly. 3 blade props will bring the best fuel economy and speed almost always. I don't know if the Yamaha can run a 16 inch diameter 3 blade prop like my Suzuki does. I see 2.8mpg to 3.2mpg at around 4200rpm on a 24 Albemarle with Suzuki 300. I feel like you should see 2.8mpg loaded when it's all said and done. Shoot for 5500rpm top end fully loaded as you will gain rpm as you loose weight along a trip and the 4.2L will have power to get you on plane anyway. I think 18x9 trim tabs are a must for your rig. Remember the bigger the tabs the less you have to dig them in. The smaller they are, the more they act as a brake. I'm surprised the 3 blade props you tried did not slip at that engine height. Good luck, you're on the right track. PROP CLEAR!

I don't know what the Pitch is now increasing pitch is going to decrease our rpm I think the last test you done you were under 6000 RPM so more pitch less RPM I don't think your trimming the outboard when you're running yet you have the outboard all the way in I don't think that's the way to run it you have to trim it Up and watch your RPM and speed and your fuel burn as your trim it up the boat should go faster because you're going to be planing better and fuel consumption should go down the problem that makes it more complicated is the weight you got on that boat I would get on very calm water and start trimming the outboard up you'll know when you go to far Plus you like to run fast i usually run my boat 28 to 32 RPM that gives me the best fuel burn at about 26 Miles per hour

Get some nitrile gloves, Captain. It will save your hands and skin from the alcohol drying them. Lake "White Caps? The CPH can handle them no problem". The second prop could have had a "spun" bushing, really difficult to trouble shoot. Been there, done that.

@@terryeytcheson1455 you think the salt water will have a difference like more mpg?

@OutOnTheReef my understanding is the buoyancy of the boat changes. If you have less draft in saltwater, in theory, you should have better performance? @rudyu2767Ай бұрын
That’s what I’m curious about as well that should be a better cruising RPM. 4000rpm will make that motor last forever. If he puts the pitch to 17 or the diameter to 15, he should be pretty close to running 3.0 mpg at 4000rpm.

@@OutOnTheReef captain I was actually not joking, google salt water density and buoyancy vs Freshwater. Hey cap, another great video. You are almost there with a propeller. I think if you go with the four blade at a 15 in diameter or a 17 inch pitch you could be at 4000 RPMs and 3.0mpg. I’m sure of it. Stay safe out there.
@OutOnTheReefАй бұрын
Thanks for the tips! cap and my engine could handle that pitch?
@rudyu2767Ай бұрын
@@OutOnTheReef I believe the engine could hold that, but what I would try on it would be a four blade 15 in diameter by 15 pitch first. That bigger diameter will help you with the top end speed and more efficiency. I agree with you that you should not go over too much pitch because the motor will struggle with all of the extra weight, so the diameter is going to be the key. I would try that 15 inch in diameter and if you can try one that’s a little bigger in diameter then 15 if possible I would do that as well maybe a 15 1/4 ,if you’re not going to change the pitch. But I think you’re getting really close to that Propeller that you need.

Man quit playing around and put you a adjustable jack plate on there. If you put one one with bthe electric motors on it you can raise a d low that up and down so you can get in them shallows waters you like so much. It will give you the best of both worlds and the weight isn't that much

Did you even watch the video and hear what he said about his reason for NOT adding a jackplate?

@@SwitchbackXThunter does it really matter... There's many benefits for adding one and having that adjustability to adapt to different surroundings makes his boat more universal for different types of areas he fish's. He's gonna do his thing anyways so it really doesn't matter
