I live in a Sub'd. next to a wetlands area in Oregon. We have a resident Coopers"s Hawk that nests in a nearby cottonwood every year. My winter bird feeder which I have set up on the patio table with the umbrella over it, is her "go to" it seems like whenever she really needs a meal. Mourning doves have got hit hard this year. When I hear a loud bang downstairs, I know is a dove flying into the sliding glass door when being attacked. She has gotten 3 this year so far. She is totally unafraid of me, sitting on the fence or in a lower branch of our birch trees. I can get quite close before she moves to a different spot. Anyway, when the babies are young, they scream all day wanting to be fed. Thinking about this year maybe climbing the tree.

When the hawk gave that short scream towards the end, I cringed. That scream usually means "protect your face falconer." I've flown many imprint Coops, very few DIDN'T become face baters. One male was cool, catching game and all. Then one afternoon, after missing a close flight on a dove, he flew back towards my fist, only to smack me in the face. Good luck and I dug your video!

the kids are funny yup ya don't wanna put your fingers to close to his beak . I read the blog about becoming a falconry looks pretty intimidating. I guess I ll just watch the Hawks around here . use to have some kestrels around and had a nest box for them but it fell apart . I see alot of cooper's hawks and red tailed hawks around our farm fields pretty awsome to watch . thanks Dan Luther from ohio

Have you considered using a T post to help get the height for slips? I would think that an imprint accipiter would readily use one.

That was great. I'm trying to get my falconers license. Is a Cooper's hawk fast enough to catch starlings? I couldn't quite tell what your bird caught.
@falconersapprentice9837

Robert, coopers hawks excel at catching starlings. They are definitely fast enough. In that video, what you saw was my hawk being trained using released quail "baggies." Good luck and I hope you pursue falconry!

The Cooper Hawk have a most difficult behavior in the raptor kingdom, in my opinion. Unless a baby caughted in this video. I not recommend to any one who do not have the experience like this guy this video.

Dude thank u sooo much- I have a cooper hawk that hunts in my back yard almost daily (I have bird feeders) the hawk helped reduce the number of pigeons - it's amazing what nature can do without us fucking it up- super cool video and nice job with the hunt(s)!!!!

Thanks! We still aren't sure! I rescued him as a pup on the side of a road. We think he's part Shepherd, he looks, acts, and behaves like one.. But other than that, probably just an all around mutt. He's very smart, fast, and knows how to work the brush and flush game. Great on commands and picks up quick.

correct me if i am wrong but did the hawk have split jesses on while at hack and while hunting? because if it had would,nt it be in danger of catching on a branch?
@falconersapprentice9837
@falconersapprentice9837 9 жыл бұрын
David, I've been waiting to see who might be observant enough to catch that. You're correct, the hawk is wearing slotted jesses in part of the "tame hack" scenes. However, he was not really in hack at that point, but I still needed some extra "tame hack" footage, so I took him off his perch and flew him past the camera a few times. In reality, he wore no jesses at all during hack. I almost didn't use that footage because I realised people might assume, but in reality he was never hacked my with slotted jesses.

@revonahawk6750
@revonahawk6750 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, every living thing drinks water. Birds of prey eat prey. That's: rabbits, quail, other birds, squirrels, and so on. They catch them live. Then they eat them. Some falconers feed their Coppers already dead quail and chicks.

I have lots of falcons and hawks in my vilage.So im wandering is it better to trap one or to raise one? what is the diference betwene a raised one and a traped one? Please answer me! thank you
@falconersapprentice9837
@falconersapprentice9837 9 жыл бұрын
It depends, if it's a red tail, they do far better taken from the wild as passage birds. If it's an accipiter, falcon, or Harris hawk, it really depends on how you want your bird to be! Above all, make sure you're in legal.
