Kids maybe at school 7 hours but reality their only learning a couple hours so much more goes on school lunch, art, library etc

Exactly, the day is full of other things. Once you focus it all down, there's less time than you think.

I mix the independent work and the "morning basket" work with breaks in between every 2-3 (sometimes 4) topics depending on how intense the subject is. My kids are 4th and 5th grades, so more work that is, every year becoming more detailed. It's amazing how we all manage and organize our children's learning differently.

We are definitely all doing things differently! I think once they get a little older we'll be able to have independent stuff earlier in our schooling.

Yes, this question! Oft repeated. I've learned that it very much depends on a. how you think about what an education is and whether they're always learning or if they're doing "sit down" stuff AND b. how engaged the child wants to be in their formal learning stuff...I've noticed that when they're in the homeschool high school years, they can spend more time doing formal academics as they're very much like a college student (here in Canada).

Agreed! I also don't think of their workbook time as their only education time, especially at this age. But that's what a lot of parents think of and are concerned about. And they can certainly handle more as they get older.
