I wish that Seppala would have sent at least sent Balto and the other dogs to good homes, instead of just selling them off to some crappy circus. I understand him categorizing dogs as better or worse than others when it came to racing and other such things like that. But it just strikes me as rather cruel that he would just pawn all of them off like that to whomever could offer him the most money, rather than even giving them away to a zoo himself or to loving families that he knew.

Fun Fact, the director of this movie was Simon Wells, the Great-Grandson of H.G. Wells of The Time Machine and War of the Worlds fame. He actually made an adaptation of his great-grandfather's famous work back in 2002... it wasn't all that great, but talk about a legacy. I think the Prince of Egypt is just as much of a masterpiece as his ancestor's stories so he's got no worries about living up to that heritage.

I was somewhat familiar with the actual history of Balto, but I wasn't aware just how hard this Seppala guy really hated a dog for simply existing, while loving another dog like he was his own son for simply existing. It's kinda disgusting that Seppala was very eager to discredit Balto in any way he could. Like, my god, he was just a dog, if you want to get mad at anyone, get mad at the musher, or even the general public for not knowing all the facts. Even from day 1 he was like "That Balto. Little furry bastard owes me tree fiddy". Not to mention that they were doing the run for a VERY good cause, that being they were rushing medicine to a town that desperately needed it, how about he stop bitching about "Oh Balto got more credit than the dog that I love more for no given reason" and appreciate that you got to participate in something that saved countless lives?
@Keznen
@Keznen Жыл бұрын
To be fair, Seppala didn't love Togo just for existing and certainly not for "no good reason". In fact, he didn't care for Togo at all when he was a puppy and tried to sell him twice, but gave up when Togo kept coming back to him. Togo only became his lead dog after proving himself. But yeah, it was definitely wrong of him to treat Balto like that. It wasn't Balto's fault that the media over-exaggerated his contributions.
@animalpawpony3547
@animalpawpony3547 Жыл бұрын
@@Keznen To be fair, Seppala only tried getting rid if Togo because if how sick he was as a puppy and the fact that he wasn't as skilled and physically strong compared to his other dogs. it wasn't until Togo proved himself that Seppla gave him a chance, and Togo improved quickly as a lead dog. For Balto, I agree the media and public didn't know Togo and him made a much bigger contribution, but given how much attention Balto and his musher got compared to Seppala and Togo, it's understandable that Seppala would be angry and jealous for feeling cheated out of the rewards he and Togo deserved. They did more work and yet the last team got most if the credit for doing less work? I mean yes Balto and Gunner ran into challenges, but nothing like Togo and Seppala. In addition, given Seppala and Togo ran across a frozen river to save time - while the ice cracked under them - that actually makes their part even more dangerous than anybody else's. The team would have fallen into the frozen waters and died plus the medicine would have sunk and been lost. Compare that to Balto saving his musher from death and getting them through a blizzard. Yes both dogs had challenges, but if Togo had failed, Balto and Gunner never would have got the medicine. So Togo and Seppala definitely had the tougher route with bigger risk and rewards. Seppala did try to clear things up a few times, but everyone just read him off as "a jealous musher trying to take the fame away from Balto/the real hero". Yeah, I'm sure THAT didn't help Seppala's personal grudge for feeling downplayed as a big part of the race. I feel like Seppala may have had a preference for what he thought made a good sled dog which is why he doubted Togo. Plus he even owned Balto and gave him away to Gunner. Seppala saw him physically more as a work dog. For Togo I think it was more for the pup's health and wellbeing.

while yes seppala had the right to sell off balto, it's definitely plausible that he harbored heavy animosity toward the dog, who received the bulk of the credit for the serum run at the time as opposed to togo, who ran a 130 mile leg. this probably indirectly led to togo's bloated credit as well, as it seems people now think he was a solo lead (he wasn't) and ran 260 miles (which by that logic balto ran 110)

There must have been a reason they fixed Balto at a young age. In actuality, if they wanted To go to be a sled dog, and I'm not sure, if they knew fixing a dog at such a young age will prevent good muscle development for better strength. I'm also not sure if they even used Balto anymore for sled dogging after that. But I'm pretty sure that had reduced Balto's ability to be a fit sled dog.

Ironically, Togo wasn't originally considered an "A dog" either. He was sickly and rambunctious as a puppy and Seppala tried to sell him twice, but both times Togo escaped and ran back to Seppala.
