I think Don Bluth is at his best when he doesn't write comedy, I think he is better with darker and creepy stories, this is why people loved Land before time, Secret of Nimh and Fievel, they feel like more adult Disney films but without annoying songs and treated audiences with maturity, he was the anti Disney that was and still is too family friendly imo.

While I can look up to characters that just want to put a smile on your face, I feel like this troll was the most out of place character ever, all because he's just all smiles and happiness and rainbows. Like why live in a place where no one likes your happiness? The reason I ask is because he literally flew with the kids to a realm where there's nice trolls like him. Why not just live with them????? The problem with this film is there's so many unanswered questions.
@ladypool14043 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, Stanley! Doug from Nostalgia critic hates this character. He finds him very annoying and ugly. I agree! Nothing about him is cute or likable. Also, the moral he teaches to kids is WRONG! He said to follow their dreams and just believe, their problems will be fix. It doesn't worked like that! You can't just pray that your pet will come back to life or your parents will be together and expect it will happen. Life isn't magic! Only good points of this movie, the animation. She is beautiful! The music is pretty too :) The rest is boring or stupid.

Ways they could've "possibly" improved this movie: Give some sentimental backstory as to WHY Stanley loves growing flowers, like maybe there's a missing lore about WHY trolls are SUPPOSED to be evil, as the evil ruler dictates. Maybe Stanley's backstory could be that his mother believed in creating beauty on Earth and got kicked out or killed due to corruption from the new queen. This would be a perfect explaination for why Stanley is so attached to having a green thumb and could explain why he's struggling with it, becuz he doesn't believe he can create beauty like his mother once did. Another thing they could've done was explain the rift between the "good" and "bad" trolls, there is nothing more boring than a villain who's evil just for the sake of being evil. Also, make the boy much older than the little sister. In fact, make them step siblings. Make him a teenager that is going through a rough time with his parents splitting up and his father remarrying to a woman that has a toddler. He has long forgotten how to be a happy child and becomes stuck with babysitting his toddler sister. Than along the way, he realizes how important his little sister actually is to him when he has to rescue her while befriending a friendly troll like Stanley. There you go: a perfect fix to create a more meaningful movie!

Very good point mentioning the involvement of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas on Bluth's more popular works. You'd think their influence might've had a stronger impact on Bluth as a storyteller, right? And Secret of NIMH... Yeah... even his BEST film isn't without its problems... "We don't know exactly how old Stanley is, or how troll age works or whatever..." We DO know, however, that Stanley is short, squat, and chubby, and those same physical qualities are shared with Rosie. There's a lot of things that honestly should be explained in this movie, like what is the disrespect with any beauty like flowers and nature by this evil troll queen? Cuz contrary to what this film would have you believe, trolls in folklore are actually very closely tied to nature, regardless if they're good OR evil.(For example; there's mountain trolls and underground trolls) I grew up reading a lot about trolls in folklore and mythology before seeing them in scary movies, and one thing scary movies tend to get right is they are allies with nature, using plants as both a weapon and hideaway against humans. Thats probably why I didn't really take the troll villain seriously as a kid lol. The Queen Troll looked like a whiney little brat in comparison to say the troll from Charles Band's "Troll" movie or the troll from "Ernest Scared Straight", who all use nature without a second glance despite them being pretty plants

I love how when people harshly critique this movie they forget that it was obviously made for very small children, for toddlers, who dont need explanations for EVERYTHING. Why do we need to know why Stanley is good? Why do we need to know how magic works? Its not magic then. The point of magic is that it exists and thats IT. "Stanley is UGLY" yeah well maybe just maybe thats because HE'S A TROLL!!!! I really dont know what is hard to understand about that. Also in regards to Rosie, what is a TWO YEAR OLD supposed to sound like? What dialogue could she have had? Have you ever heard a Two year old child speak? Like ever? They sound just like her. Oh and her being afraid of a bug that is also pretty typical of a Two Year old child. Gus is FOUR his tantrums, his exclamations of "This is stupid!" match perfectly with a boy his age. Also...no character development? Are you kidding me? Gus goes from having a massive tantrum at the beginning of the movie when we first meet him to at the end of the movie asking his dad, POLITELY, if they can do something that he wants to do and what does he want to do? He wants to take the statue of Stanley to the Park hoping that maybe that will make things right and bring him back. Gus learns how to care about someone else other than himself or Rosie. He learns compassion. He does develop as a character. Young children watching this movie dont need to question everything like you people. I loved this movie when I was a kid and though I might be too old for it now I can still appreciate it for what it is. There is a story, its simple but that doesnt make it bad. As for a lesson. The lesson of the movie is that GOOD DEEDS mean more than Bad ones. GOOD WINS OVER BAD. Not that "MAGIC WILL SOLVE ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS" who the hell grew up believing that? I sure didnt. But I knew that being GOOD, being KIND and being BRAVE were important. This movie also says to Fight for what you Believe in, Gus says it to Stanley and that if you dont then you will never have a Dream come true. You people need to listen to what is said sometimes.

The biggest thing that annoys me about the movie is how it completely botches and simplifies its environmental themes, even if it is very heavy handed. Both Stanley and Gnorga are the worst examples of this message. Stanley seems to only like plants and flowers because they're pretty, whereas Gnorga just hates them because she's a big meanie face. It could have been so much more compelling if the Trolls society simply ignored wildlife whereas Stanley wanted to save his home from pollution. Then it could have had more interesting parallels between human society and the world Stan inhabits.

I love Don Bluth movies: "The Small One", "The Secret of NIMH", "An American Tail", and "The Land Before Time" all stand the test of time as not only my favorite Don Bluth movies, but his BEST work. Movies like "All Dogs Go to Heaven", "Anastasia", "Titan A.E." also has a special place in my heart as some REALLY good movies - especially "Anastasia" (which COULD HAVE given Disney a run for its money, but it didn't), but if I had to pick Don Bluth at his lowest: its a four-way tie between "Rock-A-Doodle", "The Pebble and the Penguin", "Thumbelina", and *holding in my puke* "A Troll in Central Park" But this... THIS.... This movie was like if Bluth thought "say, that 'Barney the Dinosaur' (another Eldritch Abomination that needs to die, but another day for now) was doing something right". This is the guy that TOUGHENED our childhoods with dark movies with happy endings (noticably his movies are usually dark so long as he has a happy ending, which usually feels REALLY earned), but, with this… WHAT THE HELL WAS HE THINKING??!! You know, maybe that's why "An American Tail" became so acclaimed and successful. Steven Spielberg had the bigger say about the film, and we all know how well Spielberg makes movies (cough, cough, E.T., cough, Schindler-list, wheeze, Jaws)!

Spielberg has also made some crap, but that's another story

When it comes to the live action Mulan movie, I refer to it as, "Arrow-kickingly bad."

I don't think I agree on the "if the director thinks it's bad it's bad" argument, I mean the director of Majora's mask hated how the game turned out yet many think it's one of if not the best Zelda game, obviously this movie isn't good by any means, but the creator of something being dissatisfied with their products doesn't necessarily make said products bad, everyone hates the changes in the special editions of Starwars which George Lucas considers to be improvements over the original and made sure they were the only version avaliable for the pubblic while fans went out of their way to restore the original cut of the films, so clearly this rule isn't absolute.

Never heard of this movie as a kid and I am damn sure glad I never watched it as a kid

I have a soft spot for this movie tbh. Maybe it is the style in general are art is unique and it’s great to see it diverse in its presentation (characters and scenes)- but as a kid I loved this move enough to watch it plenty. Along with pretty much all of the movies like Rock A Doodle and otherwise. Yeah. By all means it’s likely that if I tried to watch it again, i would not like it as much. It’s one of those movies that is best left in my childhood- Like Labyrinth. The luster was much better as a child and nothing else.

Yeah as the 1990s is a rough time for Don Bluth and we can agree Troll is his worst work that even he don't like it and it shows..... -_- Say I wonder if you'll review All Dogs go to Heaven? And the live action Mulan, yeah as I feel your pain & suffering.......

I'm 1:10 in, and I've already got a mid-roll ad! OMG, can you fucking NOT?! In a 20+ minute video, wait at least 5 minutes before you do a mid-roll ad!

As a New Yorker, this is how it is there. Child Alone? Answer: "Leave it alone, I need to get to work." or "Hmm.... I am taking it with me." (P.S. If you ever feel like visiting New York, make sure you know someone from there .... for your own sake.)

Out of all Don Bluth's films, this is his weakest... Heck, his direct-to-video film Bartok the Magnificent is a better movie; at least in IMO

I remember when my parents put this movie on for me. I was about 5? I didn't have the words for it as a kid but I do now. This movie insulted my intelligence. I hated how the characters looked and whenever something bad happened to the kids or the troll I was so happy. 🤣 I really didn't like sitting through this as a kid.
