I tried to do that move on a date to the local skating rink once, but I didn’t realize then that Johnny has his back foot on its side rather than with the toe straight back like when I take a knee without skates, so my toe pick caught on the ice as soon as I kneeled and my hands slammed down on the ice behind me so hard that I broke some blood vessels. My head came close, but l got lucky and dodged that bullet. It could’ve been bad though. 😅 I’d like to try it again now that I see the right way to do it.

For those uncomfortable with Weir's flamboyance and pride in his true self, there have been many gay skaters. But the opportunities for endorsements was zero if they came out, and of course they knew they'd be hated by a portion of the audience. I admire talent on the ice, and artistry, and I don't give a damn if others think "masculinity" is missing. For all anyone knows, that "masculine" skater may well be gay!

Johnny is a wonderfully talented skater and I personally agreed with him when they were changing the rules and it tended to focus on the tricks and less on the artistry. I knew two brothers in Austrailia they were from Manchester one was a dandy and dressed in flamboyant clothes, he was straight. The other was a muscular dower sort of a guy and he was gay.

Him being gay bothers me less than the fact that figure skating has always been something without sexual innuendo. Despite that Weir is a phenomenal skater, all I see is another gal or dude looking to get laid. A lot of performances at the Olympic level are really artistic and it doesn't really matter if they're "masculine" or not, but they're about some really poignant things that venture beyond sex. Julia Lipnitskaya's performance to Schindler's List for example. Another Russian front runner Evgenia Medvedeva won the 2017 nationals with a performance played to music, sirens and all, from Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. And while the announcer stated that while the performance wasn't about the 9/11 tragedy but rather about all tragedy, it's still has far more emotional depth than this.

It’s not just about being pretty though. Ice Skating scores are based on two things: artistry and technical elements. Unfortunately for Johnny, he was around when the quad revolution started. Quads are worth the most points, but if I’m correct he never landed one (though Lysacek did win gold at the olympics the year after this without a quad. He did it by making his program difficult and putting hard jumps in his second half so he could beat Plushenko)

We went to see him in Melbourne about 12 years ago or so. He was so wonderful to watch. A beautiful skater.
