The Prius is celebrating 20 years since it rolled off the Toyota assembly line. This 2020 Prius Prime is a direct descendant of that first generation, but now with Plug-In capability. Under the hood of the Prime is a 1.8L inline-4 that is paired two electric motors to produce 121HP and uses a lithium-ion battery. On the outside you will find the unique style of the Prius. This Prime features an industry first carbon fiber hatchback. On the inside the unique styling continues with a center mounted dash and large vertical infotainment screen. Why is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime the BEST hybrid car ever built?

Generally good, flattering, accurate, and positive review, thank you. As a 2017 PP owner, few inaccuracies - (1) Apple CarPlay is available on the 2020 PPs only, the 2021 added Android Auto but only on the lower LE trim, (2) alloy wheels under hubcaps, not steel, (3) Lithium Ion battery not under your butt, it takes up the rear hatch area only, (4) driving in B mode not recommended unless you want to use engine braking, and (5) you insinuate that the Limited Trim has upscale features like chrome, those same features come standard across all 3 trim levels.
@flylfb
@flylfb 4 жыл бұрын
Is B mode really not recommended? I use it most of the time. It does have less gliding but give me a (fake?) sensation I would have more battery range.
@extorian
@extorian 4 жыл бұрын
@@flylfb B mode is intended for very long downhill roads when your battery is full, only. Once the battery is full, you no longer have regenerative braking, as there's nowhere for that energy to get stored, so when pressing the brake it's entirely on the normal friction brakes (no regenerative braking). A normal car can split the braking between friction brakes and engine braking. That's exactly what B Mode does, it ENABLES ENGINE BRAKING. Your engine will now stay connected to the drivetrain and rev up when slowing down, adding to the braking effect by making the wheels turn the engine, just like dropping a normal car into a low gear would do. As your car is now favouring engine braking over regenerative braking, you're wasting that energy by turning it into heat in the engine and brakes. So, ONLY use B mode when your battery is full and you're going downhill and needing to brake lots, otherwise you're basically turning off the majority of regenerative braking, and vastly reducing your fuel economy.
@2927usmc
@2927usmc 4 жыл бұрын
@@flylfb In the owner's manual the only applicable notation I could find regarding your question is "If the vehicle is driven continuously in the B position, fuel efficiency will become low. Usually, select the D position." Page 341 of the 2019 PP owner's manual.

Joe, I just discovered your channel the other day, have been binge watching like crazy. Dude you are cracking me up here with all these videos. The candy bar references and the books, like it’s funny but you are also legit speaking truth 😂😂 Seriously though, I really appreciate your style. Someone said it in another recent video, that all your videos have long takes, not constant cuts. It shows you really know so many facts and details. Some other channels have obnoxiously long intros, over explain or continue saying the same thing. You are to the point yet engaging. And I really appreciate your formula, how you give a little history in the beginning. It’s so helpful. A realistic dream car of mine is a WRX, yet I’ve recently been curious about where Prius is, and I’ve lost track of the line up. You answered all my questions. I’m subbed man! I can see why people hate Prius drivers. These cars judge you and score your driving each time you drive, from the acceleration to speed to even braking with many graphs and data available. I have owned all generations of Prius, started with the aweful first gen back in 2003. However I hate my stupid 2021 prime, I use the word hate because I now regret ever selling my favorite Prius of all generations. My 2013 Prius plug in advanced. I have owned it now for a month and put about 300 miles on it. As compared to my 2013 plug in it had 2 glove compartments, bigger center console for storage. More storage under the shifter. I can care less for the ridiculous big screen, most of the bottom half is taken up by the stereo and other half the navigation which I find totally unnecessary. Who needs to stare at the navigation screen and stereo while driving or have the entire screen filled with navigation. I have it turned off most of the time. I miss the radio knobs in the plug in Prius and the stereo and back up camera was sufficient. I don't need Apple play. As long as I can pair the stereo with my phone that is enough. The Plug in stereo was much more superior than the new Prime. Seems like all car manufacturers are now trying to add the biggest screen they can into the car, which I think is totally unnecessary. It now robs off all the room on the dash and center console and takes away the practicality . Heck I use my Android phone for all my navigation and music anyways. The single Prime glove compartment is tiny, it is smaller than the plug in. My other complaint was the lack of the visor extensions on all previous Prius gen 1 to gen 3. Now they finally included one , however it does not extend out very far, hint for Toyota, please if you are going to add a visor extender make sure it extends back to the B pillar, that's where most driver's head is with the exception of shorter people to have their seats close to the most forward position. The biggest disappointment is the rear trunk , it's tiny, ridiculously tiny. I used to take my plug in to Costco as the go to car as it holds a bunch of stuff. Now I can't even rely on taking this stupid car. I have to take my Prius V wagon or my Sienna . The lower roof made this an impractical all around car, it's harder for rear passengers to get in and again the trunk is non existent. You would think with the lithium battery the engineers would be able to get the same trunk size as the 2021 regular hybrid Prius. The back cargo shelf is literally 6 inches higher as compared to the regular Prius. I am planning on selling it in a couple of years after I get tired of it. I normally put on around 1000 miles per month, the evidence proves that this Prime is not as practical for me . Gas mileage not plugged in compared to my older Prius is only 3 miles per gallon difference 49 vs 52 mpg average relying on just gas which is how I use it. I don't plug in because I've done the math, it costs more to plug it in than just relying on the gas. Electric range 13 miles vs 24.5 miles so what, big deal. I do not recommend this stupid car. I also noticed that the electric motor when you first back it out of the garage is much much noisier, a noisier humming sound. Really? Build quality is not as good either, seems like it has fallen to the victims of fewer parts, cheaper to build, more profit for Toyota.

two of us are averaging over 186 miles per gallon. and no one passes me . the first year i bought 100.00 worth of gas and went over 20238 miles the car does not go over 199 in the charts. feel safe . drove to venice, flo. 3 times last year , i enjoy the b brake for going into turns or curves, especially with ice and snow on the road. if I get tried i let the car run in park and the inside ai stays even , quiet, take a pillow and light blanket and park at a convenice store for bath room and drinks , food. cost 10 cents per hour to do this. so no need for paying for a room. the auto set speed control works great , no need to use the gas pedal

BIG QUESTION - Whenever I drive out of state, I have to plug it somewhere? I really like the prime But it's a hassle to plug it in a hotel lobby or Air BnB home. It's great on gas, technology, etc etc. But that one thing really turns me away. I will look into another hybrid or gas vehicle.

You know you don’t have to plug it in to keep using it. It’s not going to be any easier to plug in other electric and electric hybrid cars on the road.

I’m absolutely surprised at all cars don’t get this kind of miles per gallon. It uses a traction battery in conjunction with a centrifugal force charging motor. I was so tired of having a car that got 25 miles per gallon. Now I’m getting 60to approximately without charging-and oddly enough I’m not getting tailgated. Thoroughly enjoy the car (quite inside on the highway) and I’m glad they have it priced so that we could afford it. Tesla’s amazing, but priced out of the range.

The strippee Prius Prime with the nice small display and mechanical controls + vents in the center console is the best model. In the Prime groups it's been called 'the real deluxe model' jokingly for years now. I don't like new cars typically but this car has been really great. I highly recommend it. You can watch Scotty's video on this too for a really great overview of the car.

B mode engages Engine braking not regenerative braking. Yes it increases the regenerative breaking but it is less efficient as it also uses the engine to brake loosing energy. It is only ment to be used on long steep hills.

20 years ago this car was cutting edge and revolutionary. Fast forward to today and there's little reason to get this over a Toyota Corolla Hybrid (That is almost $10,000 cheaper than this car is). Heck even a RAV4 hybrid base MSRP is still a base price under $30k (Before taxes and fees)

You’ll never go thousands of miles without refueling a corolla or RAV4 hybrid. You will with this Prius Prime if you keep the battery charged.

@@natalie2070 Only if you're going less than 20~25 miles at a time and don't mind that once depleted you're gonna be stuck there for at least 2-5 hours while you wait for that battery to recharge. So have fun with that! Sure it's great if you plan on commuting short distances over flat terrain and good weather. Oherwise it gets basically about the same MPG as a (Corolla or Camry) Hybrid does.
